Fields of Mistria: How to Get Married and Have a Child

Everything that has to happen between a first date and your first baby in the 1.0 update, from the Engagement Ring to the Mystical Feather.

Everything that has to happen between a first date and your first baby in the 1.0 update, from the Engagement Ring to the Mystical Feather.

Marriage and babies finally landed in Fields of Mistria with the 1.0 release on 5 August 2026, and the path to a child is shorter than most farm sims. There is no house upgrade, no nursery, and no crib to buy. You marry a romance candidate, wait for a cutscene that hands you a Mystical Feather, then use that Feather to start a family. The whole thing is optional at every step.

Quick answer: Reach 10 hearts with a romanceable villager, craft the Engagement Ring and marry them, keep playing until a cutscene gives you the Mystical Feather, then use the Feather and say yes in the family planning conversation. Agreeing unlocks the “Parent” achievement and gives you a baby.

What you need before you can have a child

Children were added in the v1.0.0 update and the v1.0.1 hotfix did not change them, so the requirements below are current. You cannot skip ahead to a baby. Marriage is a hard gate, and the Mystical Feather only appears after the wedding.

RequirementDetail
10 heartsReach maximum hearts with a romanceable villager you are dating.
MarriageCraft the Engagement Ring, propose, and hold the wedding.
Mystical FeatherGranted in a cutscene in the weeks after your wedding.
Family planning talkUse the Feather and agree to the conversation with your spouse.

An existing save works fine. A Year 3 or Year 4 farm can start dating, marry, and have a child right away, and the related achievements unlock retroactively for anything you already finished.

Reach 10 hearts and get married

Date your chosen villager up to the 8-heart event and pick the romance option instead of the best-friend route. Caldarus is the exception. He offers romance at 6 hearts once you finish “Breaking The Final Seal.” Dates raise hearts faster in 1.0, so lean on them to close the gap to 10.
The morning after you hit 10 hearts, Elsie mails you the Engagement Ring recipe. Use the scroll, craft the ring at a Forge, then propose to your partner.
Plan the wedding through dialogue with your fiancé. You choose the flower colour, the cake flavour, and the reception meal, then hold the ceremony to earn the “I do!” achievement.

Two things to settle before you propose

Getting engaged drops everyone else you were dating down to best friends. If you want to keep those relationships, toggle the setting that disables this before you confirm the proposal. Flipping it afterward does nothing.

While you hold the ring but have not proposed, you can still retrigger other candidates’ 10-heart events and collect their Special Items. Once you are engaged, that window closes for good.

Get the Mystical Feather and start the family planning talk

After the wedding, just keep playing. A cutscene arrives in the following weeks and grants the Mystical Feather, the item that unlocks children. There is nothing to build or upgrade first.

Use the Feather to open a family planning conversation with your spouse. Agree, and you are having a child, which triggers the “Parent” achievement. Reaching that child’s first birthday later unlocks “Time Flies.”

How the baby actually arrives is the least documented part right now. Player reports describe multiple routes, with your spouse carrying the pregnancy, you carrying it, or a magical bird delivering the child. Female candidates are said to offer all three options and male candidates two, with carrying available regardless of your chosen pronouns. Treat that as unconfirmed until you test it yourself.

You can skip having a child entirely

The baby is a choice, not a scripted event forced on you. The Feather conversation only produces a child if you agree, and marriage itself is optional too. If you prefer the relationships without any of this, the best-friend route at 8 hearts stays open.

Note: It is not yet confirmed whether declining is permanent or whether the Feather sticks around so you can change your mind later.

Do babies resemble your spouse?

Early signs point to yes, and these look like designed children rather than a single sprite with a colour swap. One player’s Caldarus daughter had small horns and facial markings, with in-game text describing her as a dragon or half-dragon.

A look through the game files reported one baby sprite per spouse, a set gender for each child, two skin-tone variants, and default names. Caldarus’s default name was listed as Tephra, and both the Caldarus and Seridia children were said to have pointed ears. Datamined details can shift in a patch, so hold them loosely until they show up in normal play.

Marriage and child achievements

Six Steam achievements track the relationship chain from first friendship to your child’s first birthday. Best Friend and Romantic are the two halves of the 8-heart fork, so you can grab both in one save using different characters.

AchievementHow to unlock
Best FriendReach eight hearts with any villager and choose to become best friends.
RomanticReach eight hearts with a romanceable villager and start dating them.
True LoveReach ten hearts with a romanceable villager you are dating.
I do!Get married.
ParentHave a child.
Time FliesReach your child’s first birthday.

Mistria’s existing children: Dell, Luc and Maple

If you were looking for the kids who already live in town rather than your own baby, these are the three. They are ordinary child villagers, not romance candidates, and they are unrelated to your child.

All three reject caffeine, alcohol, and bombs as gifts, so keep those out of your gift rotation for them.

You do not need a fresh save for any of this. Existing farms carry over with full access to 1.0 content, you can only marry one of the 12 candidates at a time, and the v1.0.1 hotfix was almost entirely crash fixes that left marriage and children untouched. Marry, wait for the Feather, and the family planning talk does the rest.
