Apple’s digital driver’s license and state ID feature in Wallet is live in nine U.S. states and Puerto Rico, with additional states committed to joining but no firm timelines. You can present an iPhone or Apple Watch at select TSA checkpoints and some businesses, but the rollout remains gradual more than three years after launch.

Availability and rollout

Residents in these locations can add a driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch. Support began in 2022 and has expanded slowly since.

Location Type Wallet ID availability
Arizona State March 2022
Maryland State May 2022
Colorado State November 2022
Georgia State May 2023
Ohio State July 2024
Hawaii State August 2024
California State September 2024
Iowa State October 2024
New Mexico State December 2024
Puerto Rico Territory December 2024

Apple outlines how to add and present IDs in Wallet, including where they can be used and device requirements, on its support page for driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet.

Participating airports

Apple Wallet IDs can be used at TSA digital ID lanes in a limited set of airports. Travelers should confirm availability at the checkpoint or consult the TSA’s digital ID map.

Future states

Eight additional states have signed on to support IDs in Apple Wallet, with timing to be announced by each jurisdiction:

  • Montana
  • West Virginia
  • Connecticut
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah
  • Illinois

Beyond the U.S., Apple says the feature works with Japan’s My Number Card starting with iOS 18.4. Wallet IDs can also be used to confirm age or identity at select U.S. businesses and in some apps, though Apple does not publish a comprehensive list of participating locations.

Where you can use it

Once added, an iPhone or Apple Watch can present your ID through encrypted device-to-reader communication at supported TSA checkpoints. Apple positions the feature as a way to verify identity and age without handing over your device, with usage details and setup steps documented in the Apple Wallet ID support page.

Expansion now depends on state adoption and broader TSA deployment, so expect incremental progress rather than a rapid national switch.
