Ubisoft’s long-rumored Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake will reportedly remove all modern-day sections and is targeting an early 2026 release window.

The details were first reported in a video report from Jeux Vidéo Magazine, which outlines broad design changes to bring the 2013 pirate adventure in line with the series’ more recent direction.

Release date and window

The remake is said to be aiming for early 2026, with March described as the likeliest target. The same report cautions the schedule could slip toward late 2026 depending on progress.

Gameplay and content changes

The biggest shift is narrative structure: all present-day (outside-the-Animus) gameplay is reportedly being cut. To offset those removals, Ubisoft is expected to add new pirate-era content, including material centered on Mary Read that was not in the original release.

  • Roughly four hours of additional pirate-era missions are planned.
  • Combat and gear systems will be overhauled toward the series’ RPG-style approach seen in recent entries.

Collectively, the changes suggest a focus on uninterrupted historical storytelling and systems-driven progression over the earlier, more segmented format.

Technical upgrades and engine

On the tech side, the remake is expected to run on the engine used for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, bringing visual and systemic upgrades. Reported improvements include seamless transitions when sailing (no loading screens) and denser, less barren smaller islands to better reward exploration. Some assets from Skull & Bones may be reused.

Official status and availability

Ubisoft has not formally announced the Black Flag remake or confirmed these details. The project is reportedly led by Ubisoft Singapore, with support from Ubisoft Bordeaux and Ubisoft Belgrade.

The removal of modern-day sequences has already sparked pushback among fans who value the franchise’s overarching contemporary storyline, while others welcome a tighter focus on Edward Kenway’s pirate-era exploits. Until Ubisoft makes the game official, timelines and features could change.
