Respeccing in Borderlands 4 is unlocked after completing the third main mission, which grants access to The Launchpad and the first Respec Machine. From that point, any Respec Machine in Faction Towns and major Safe Houses can reset your skills for a fee tied to your current cash.

Respec requirements in Borderlands 4

You need to finish the third main mission to reach The Launchpad, where the game introduces your first Respec Machine. Once unlocked, Respec Machines appear in key hubs. On the map, look for a small white marker showing a player silhouette surrounded by a recycle-style symbol.

Use a Respec Machine

A Respec Machine lets you either reset every skill you’ve purchased or reset only the skills in the tree you’re viewing. While you are inside the machine’s menu, you can refund and reassign points as many times as you want without paying again; the fee is charged each time you access the machine’s menu. All spent points are returned to your pool when you respec.

Method 1: Respec all skills

Step 1: Travel to a Respec Machine in a Faction Town or a major Safe House. Verify the map marker that resembles a white player icon inside a recycle symbol so you’re heading to the right station.

Step 2: Stand in front of the machine until the interaction prompt shows the respec price. The cost scales with your cash stack, so expect higher fees as you accumulate more money.

Step 3: Hold the interact button to open the menu. On PlayStation use Square; on PC use E.

Step 4: Choose the “Respec All” option to refund every point across all trees. This immediately returns your spent points to the available pool.

Step 5: Reassign points to build the setup you want. Make all adjustments now; if you leave the menu and return later, you’ll pay the fee again.

Method 2: Respec a single skill tree

Step 1: Go to any Respec Machine and check the on-screen tooltip for the current fee. This lets you decide whether you want to adjust one tree now or wait.

Step 2: Open the Respec Machine menu by holding the interact button (Square on PlayStation, E on PC).

Step 3: Navigate to the tree you want to change and select “Respec Tree.” Only the skill points invested in that tree will be refunded.

Step 4: Allocate the refunded points within that tree or move them to other trees as needed. Confirm you’re satisfied before exiting to avoid another fee on your next visit.

Respec Machine locations (notable hubs)

The machines appear in Faction Towns and certain Safe Houses after you unlock respec. Below are examples to look for as you progress:

Area type Notable locations
Faction Towns. The Launchpad, Carcadia, Belton’s Bore.
Safe Houses. The Lockaway.

Costs, refunds, and limits

The fee to respec is based on how much cash you’re carrying. As your funds grow, the price increases, so it’s cheaper early on and more expensive later. Inside the menu, you can rework your loadout freely without an extra charge; you only pay again if you close the menu and come back.

All invested points are refunded when you respec, whether you reset a single tree or your entire build. This lets you experiment with different setups and quickly iterate without losing progress.

Once you’ve unlocked The Launchpad, use the nearest Respec Machine to experiment—just finish your changes before backing out so you don’t pay twice.
