The Reliquary of Courage is the first Mountain Reliquary most players stumble across in Ghost of Yotei. It’s a teaching puzzle: read a short riddle, notice the environment, and act on it. Here’s how to get there, solve it in seconds, and what you earn for doing it.

Reliquary of Courage location (Yotei Grasslands)

You’ll find this reliquary near the center of the Yotei Grasslands. Look for the left‑side river that splits into a Y; the reliquary sits in the second bend below that split, tucked inside a dense bamboo grove. Circle the grove until you see a clump of yellow bamboo you can cut to open the path. If you’re nearby, the golden guiding bird can also lead you directly to the clearing.

There’s another way to mark it: the cartographer sells a reliquary map you can place to set a waypoint. It isn’t required, but it will put a pin on your map if you prefer a marked route.

How to solve the Reliquary of Courage riddle

The stone reads like a fable about a lost child guided by wolves whose eyes face the true Mount Yotei. The “wolves” are a clue pointing to gaze and direction — don’t interact with the reliquary yet. Instead, find the four small animal statues placed north, east, south, and west around the pedestal.

  • Stand beside each small statue and tap R2 to rotate it.
  • Turn the statues until the fox face on each one is aimed directly at Mount Yotei on the horizon.
  • Mount Yotei is a large landmark; from the front of the reliquary (the side with the inscription), it’s straightforward to identify the mountain’s direction.

When all four fox faces align toward Mount Yotei, the reliquary unlocks and the lid slides open.

Reward. Opening the Reliquary of Courage awards the Charm of Mount Yotei. This charm reduces all incoming damage by a small amount — an early, always‑on defensive perk that helps across the entire first region and beyond.

Trophy progress: Mountain Reliquaries. This shrine is one of several Mountain Reliquary puzzles scattered across Ezo. Completing all of them is required for the “Child of the Mountain” trophy. If you’re targeting a platinum run, logging each solved reliquary as you go will save cleanup time later.

Once you’ve claimed the charm, use the golden bird or your map to fan out through the Grasslands. Reliquaries follow the same logic: read the riddle, scan for nearby statues or cues, and think in terms of sightlines to major landmarks. Mount Yotei is the compass for this first one — a fitting way to learn the rules the mountain will keep teaching across the rest of Ezo.
