Apple's iOS 18 update introduces a new accessibility feature called Hover Typing. This tool displays a larger version of text as users type, making it easier for some individuals to see and review their input in real-time.
Hover Typing is part of iOS 18's accessibility features, designed to make text input more manageable for users who may have difficulty with small on-screen keyboards or those with visual impairments.
To enable Hover Typing on your iPhone:
- Open the 'Settings' app on your iPhone's home screen.
- Scroll down and tap on 'Accessibility' in the settings menu.
- In the Accessibility menu, look for 'Keyboards & Typing' under the 'Accessories' section and tap on it.
- On the next screen, you'll see an option for 'Hover Typing' Tap on this to access its settings.
- At the top of the Hover Typing screen, you'll find a toggle switch. Tap this switch to turn Hover Typing on. The switch will turn green when enabled.
- Once enabled, you can explore the additional customization options below the toggle switch to adjust Hover Typing to your preferences.
Apple has included several customization options for Hover Typing:
- Display mode: Users can choose where the Hover Typing window appears - inline near the cursor, at the top of the screen, or above the onscreen keyboard.
- Text size: The size of the magnified text can be adjusted.
- Font: Users can select their preferred font for the enlarged text.
- Colors: Both text and background colors can be customized for better visibility.
- Window size: The size of the Hover Typing window itself is adjustable.
These options allow users to tailor the Hover Typing experience to their specific needs and preferences.
To temporarily hide the Hover Typing window, users can swipe on it. The window reappears when typing resumes.
Hover Typing is distinct from another feature called Hover Text, which has been available in previous iOS versions. While Hover Text displays larger versions of existing text when a user hovers over it with a pointing device, Hover Typing specifically magnifies text as it's being typed.
Hover Typing is available on all iPhone models compatible with iOS 18. Users can access this feature as part of the iOS 18 update, which is currently available.
