Races in Abyss function as class-like systems that grant passive bonuses to stats such as damage, oxygen capacity, speed, and weight. Every player starts as a Human with no passive abilities, but you can reroll your race using Star Shards to unlock stronger options with unique skills. The game features 16 races across six rarity tiers: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, and Mythical.
Quick answer: Open the Races menu at the top of the screen after completing the tutorial, then spend 100 Star Shards for a standard reroll or 450 Star Shards for a Lucky Reroll with improved odds for higher-rarity races.

How to Reroll Your Race
Step 1: Complete the tutorial. The Races menu becomes available only after you finish the initial tutorial sequence.
Step 2: Click the Races button at the top of the screen while inside the bubble hub area. This opens the race reroll interface.
Step 3: Choose between two reroll options. A standard Reroll costs 100 Star Shards and offers base odds for each rarity tier. A Lucky Reroll costs 450 Star Shards and dramatically increases the chance of rolling Rare, Epic, Legendary, or Mythical races while reducing Common and Uncommon odds from 50% to 3% and 29% to 27%, respectively.
Each reroll replaces your current race in the active slot. You can reroll as many times as you have Star Shards, but every new result overwrites the previous one unless you unlock additional race slots.

Reroll Odds by Rarity
| Rarity | Standard Reroll | Lucky Reroll |
|---|---|---|
| Common | 50% | 3% |
| Uncommon | 29% | 27% |
| Rare | 14% | 38% |
| Epic | 5% | 21% |
| Legendary | 2% | 10% |
| Mythical | 0.2% | 1% |
Lucky Rerolls shift the probability distribution heavily toward Rare and Epic tiers, making them the preferred choice once you accumulate enough Star Shards. Standard rerolls remain useful for early-game experimentation or when Star Shards are scarce.
Pity System
Abyss includes a pity system that guarantees higher-rarity races after a set number of rerolls. After 20 rerolls without obtaining a Rare or higher race, the next reroll guarantees at least a Rare. After 50 rerolls without a Legendary or Mythical race, the next reroll guarantees at least a Legendary.
The exact reset conditions for the pity counter are not fully documented, but the system ensures that prolonged bad luck does not prevent access to stronger races indefinitely.

How to Earn Star Shards
Star Shards are the only currency used for race rerolls and slot unlocks. You earn them through four primary methods:
Bestiary completion: Catch unique fish species and speak with Richard in the Forgotten Dome to claim Star Shards for each new entry. Each fish added to the bestiary awards a fixed number of shards.
Achievements: Open the Achievements menu (third icon in the top-right row) and complete tasks such as playing for a set duration, catching a certain number of fish, or cracking geodes. Each achievement tier awards Star Shards, and claiming the first tier unlocks the next tier with higher rewards. For example, playing for one hour awards 5 Star Shards and unlocks the six-hour tier, which awards 20 Star Shards.
Treasure chests: Discover and open treasure chests scattered across the world. Some chests contain Star Shards as loot.
Robux purchase: Click the plus button next to your Star Shard count in the UI to open the shop and purchase shard packs with Robux.
Unlocking Additional Race Slots
You can equip up to three races simultaneously by unlocking extra slots. Each slot requires a one-time Star Shard payment:
- First slot: Unlocked by default
- Second slot: 1,000 Star Shards
- Third slot: 5,000 Star Shards
Multiple race slots allow you to stack passive bonuses from different races without rerolling. This is particularly useful for combining complementary stat buffs or preserving a rare roll while experimenting with others.

Which Races to Prioritize
Kraken and Sea Angel are the strongest races due to their multiple high-impact passives and stat bonuses. Kraken's Endless Depths scales with total fish caught, making it ideal for long-term progression, while Leviathan's Legacy provides a clutch survival mechanic. Sea Angel offers the highest oxygen bonus in the game and unique movement-based damage scaling.
Shark is the best Legendary option for damage-focused builds, with a flat 20% damage increase and Blood Frenzy for low-oxygen scenarios. Vampire Squid excels in extended exploration due to Blood Siphon's oxygen regeneration, which can extend time outside the bubble indefinitely if timed correctly.
Crab is the top Epic choice, offering balanced defensive stats and Iron Shell's damage mitigation. Spirit is a strong early-game Rare race because Last Breath prevents death from oxygen depletion, giving new players a safety net while learning the game's mechanics.
Common and Uncommon races provide minimal bonuses and should be rerolled as soon as you accumulate enough Star Shards. Monkey and Fish are the least weak Uncommon options if you need a temporary placeholder before unlocking higher rarities.
Lucky Rerolls become cost-effective once you have saved at least 1,000 Star Shards, as the improved odds for Rare and Epic races justify the higher cost. Standard rerolls are better for early experimentation when you have fewer than 500 shards.
