The Crude Pickaxe is one of the first tools you should craft in Hytale. It lets you mine stone and ore efficiently, opens up early progression, and only asks for a handful of basic materials you can gather near your spawn.
Crude Pickaxe recipe in Hytale
To craft a Crude Pickaxe, you need:
- 2× Stone Rubble
- 2× Sticks
- 2× Plant Fiber
There is no need for a workbench or furnace at this stage. Once you have these six items in your inventory, you can craft the pickaxe directly from your character menu.

How to get Stone Rubble
Stone Rubble is usually the first material you will see while moving through the starting area.
Step 1: Walk around your immediate surroundings and look for small gray chunks of rock on the ground. These loose pieces can be picked up directly as Stone Rubble.
Step 2: If you do not see rubble lying around, look for Cobblestone blocks nearby. Break these blocks by hand to generate Stone Rubble drops.
Either approach works, but Cobblestone serves as a reliable fallback when the terrain looks empty.

How to get Sticks and Plant Fiber
Sticks and Plant Fiber both come from early vegetation, so you can collect them together without extra travel.
Step 1: Find small bushes or low plants close to where you spawn. Move up to them and break them to harvest materials.
Step 2: Collect the drops that appear. Bushes can yield both Sticks and Plant Fiber, so clear several in a small area until you have at least two of each.
Another option is to cut down a tree. Felling a tree provides wood byproducts as well, but for the Crude Pickaxe specifically, bushes are usually faster and require less effort.

How to craft the Crude Pickaxe
Once all required materials are in your inventory, crafting the tool is straightforward.
Step 1: Press Tab to open your inventory and crafting interface.
Step 2: Look through the crafting list on the side of the interface and locate the Crude Pickaxe entry.
Step 3: Select the Crude Pickaxe, confirm the recipe uses 2× Stone Rubble, 2× Sticks, and 2× Plant Fiber from your inventory, then choose the Craft option.
Step 4: Wait for the brief crafting animation to finish. The Crude Pickaxe is then added to your inventory and can be moved to a hotbar slot for immediate use.

What to do after crafting your first pickaxe
With a Crude Pickaxe equipped, you can mine Cobblestone far more quickly and begin stockpiling stone for later tools and structures. It also lets you start working toward metal tools. For example, once you have better gear, you can explore Emerald Grove caves to mine iron ore and eventually upgrade to stronger pickaxes.
Replacing the Crude Pickaxe with a Copper Pickaxe and then an Iron Pickaxe significantly speeds up mining and smooths out progression, but it all starts with this first simple craft.
