Crimson Desert: Delivering Thick Hides for Carl's Request

Crimson Desert: Delivering Thick Hides for Carl's Request

Carl's Request is one of the first Greymane Commission quests you can pick up at the Howling Hill camp in Crimson Desert. It falls under the "Tales of the Greymanes" quest line and tasks you with gathering five Thick Hides and delivering them to a dyer at the Totesmith Tannery in the Hernand region.

Quick answer: Talk to Carl at the Greymane Camp, collect 5 Thick Hides, deliver them to the dyer inside the Totesmith Tannery, then return to Carl at camp to receive a Medium Bag, +50 Trust with Carl, and +50 Greymane Contribution.

Where to start Carl's Request

You can accept the quest from Carl at the Greymane Camp in Howling Hill. The commission appears on the camp's quest board relatively early in the game, around the time you begin exploring the broader Hernand region. No specific prerequisite quest is confirmed, though progressing through the initial Greymane faction storyline will naturally surface it.

Getting 5 Thick Hides

You need five Thick Hides in your inventory before heading to the tannery. Thick Hides drop from various wildlife across the Hernand region — hunting larger animals like deer and boar is the most reliable way to stock up. If you have been selling hides to merchants, check your storage or hunt a few more before making the trip. The quest will not let you complete the delivery without all five.

Finding the Totesmith Tannery and the dyer

Step 1: Open your map and look for the Totesmith Tannery marker in Hernand. The quest objective will place a waypoint on it once you accept the commission from Carl.

Step 2: Travel to the tannery and pass through the main gate. Once inside, look to your left. The NPC you need is a dyer wearing an orange shirt — he stands out clearly against the tannery's muted surroundings.

Step 3: Speak with the dyer and select the dialogue option to hand over the five Thick Hides. A delivery confirmation will appear in your quest log.

💡
Follow the map marker closely once you enter the tannery grounds. The dyer is easy to walk past if you head straight instead of turning left after the gate.

Returning to Carl for the reward

After delivering the hides, the quest updates and directs you back to the Greymane Camp south of Hernand. Speak with Carl there to complete the commission and collect your rewards.

Why Carl's Request matters for Greymane progression

Greymane Commissions like this one are the primary way to build Trust with individual camp members and earn Greymane Contribution points. Contribution feeds directly into unlocking better gear at the Greymane Contribution Shop and expanding the Howling Hill base. The Medium Bag reward also helps with inventory management, which becomes increasingly important as you gather crafting materials across Hernand.

Completing Carl's Request also serves as a prerequisite for later commissions. Both Pierce's Request and Tranan's Request require you to finish Carl's Request alongside Ronald's Request and Ronnie's Request before they become available. If you want to work through the full "Tales of the Greymanes" commission chain efficiently, knocking out Carl's delivery early keeps the pipeline moving.

Carl's Request is straightforward — gather hides, ride to the tannery, hand them off, and ride back. The real value is in the Greymane Contribution and the quest chain it unlocks, so treat it as an early investment in your camp's growth rather than just a simple fetch errand.
