Crimson Desert Has a Playable Female Character, but There's a Catch

Crimson Desert, the open-world action-adventure game from Pearl Abyss launching on March 19, 2026, does not include a traditional character creator. You cannot pick your character's gender or build a custom avatar from scratch. But that doesn't mean you're locked into playing a male character for the entire game. One of the three playable characters is a woman named Damiane.

Quick answer: Yes, you can play as a female character in Crimson Desert. Damiane is a playable protagonist who wields a rapier and pistol, though she is not available during the main storyline — you unlock her through progression and play as her outside of the central narrative.

Crimson Desert's three playable characters

Rather than offering a character creation suite, Crimson Desert gives you three distinct, pre-made protagonists. Each has a unique combat style, weapon loadout, and personality. You start the game as Kliff Macduff, a soldier from the Greymane faction, and he remains the focal point of the main story throughout. The other two characters become available as you progress.

CharacterGenderCombat StyleWeapons
Kliff MacduffMaleBalanced fighterSword and shield, bow
DamianeFemaleAgile glass cannonRapier, pistol, buckler
OongkaMaleHeavy bruiserTwo-handed axe, musket/shotgun

Each character has a completely different moveset and skill tree, so switching between them isn't just cosmetic — it fundamentally changes how combat plays out. Pearl Abyss' western marketing manager, Will J Powers, confirmed on the Dropped Frames podcast that you can spec into different builds within each character's skill tree, giving you some flexibility even within the preset archetypes.

Who is Damiane and how does she play?

Damiane fights with a rapier for close-range melee and a pistol for ranged engagements. Her mobility is her defining trait — she can dodge attacks quickly and chain devastating combos when she closes the gap on enemies. The tradeoff is a noticeably low HP pool, which means careless positioning will get you killed fast. Think of her as a high-risk, high-reward pick compared to Kliff's more forgiving sword-and-shield approach.

Her voice actress is Rebecca Hansenn, who previously portrayed EVE in Stellar Blade. Damiane is the only female character you can control in Crimson Desert — there are no additional unlockable female protagonists beyond her.

No character creator, but some visual customization exists

Pearl Abyss built its reputation partly on Black Desert Online's famously deep character creator, so the absence of one in Crimson Desert surprised many fans. The studio has been clear that this is an intentional design choice — Crimson Desert is structured around authored characters with defined backstories rather than player-created blank slates.

That said, you're not entirely stuck with default appearances. All three characters can visit barbers to change hairstyles and have their eyebrows adjusted. Kliff and Oongka have beard customization options. There's also a Dyehouse system that lets you retint armor, apply decals, and even customize your horse and mech. Damiane specifically can be tweaked with cosmetic options like hairstyles and tattoos.

These options fall well short of a full character creator, but they give you enough room to make each protagonist feel a bit more personal.

Why the lack of gender selection matters to some players

The question of whether Crimson Desert would include a female playable option has been a persistent topic in the community since the game was first announced. Many players — particularly women who found deep character customization central to their enjoyment of Black Desert Online — expressed disappointment when early reveals focused exclusively on Kliff. The confirmation that Damiane exists as a playable character addressed part of that concern, but her exclusion from the main story left some fans feeling like the option was incomplete.

Pearl Abyss has positioned Crimson Desert as an open-world action-adventure game first, with RPG elements layered on top. The studio's reasoning is that authored characters allow for tighter, more personal storytelling — a philosophy shared by games like The Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2, where the protagonist's identity is woven into the narrative fabric. Whether that tradeoff is worth it depends entirely on what you value in a game like this.

Damiane is your only path to playing as a female character in Crimson Desert. She brings a genuinely distinct combat experience compared to Kliff and Oongka, but if playing as a woman during the main story is important to you, that option simply isn't on the table. You'll need to progress through Kliff's storyline before Damiane becomes available for open-world play.
