Crimson Desert Iron Ore Mining — Finishing Rhett's Request in Hernand

Crimson Desert Iron Ore Mining — Finishing Rhett's Request in Hernand

Rhett's Request is one of the first Hernand Commissions you'll pick up in Crimson Desert, and it doubles as a crash course in the game's tool system. The burly blacksmith wants Kliff to fetch him some iron ore, but the quest has a couple of wrinkles that trip players up — mainly how to actually swing a pickaxe and where to turn in the ore once you have it.

Quick answer: Speak to Rhett at his equipment shop in Hernand, mine 2 Iron Ore from the node southwest of town, then deliver the ore to Rhett's assistant (not Rhett himself) to complete the quest.

Starting Rhett's Request

You can spot the quest flyer on the Hernand Notice Board, but the commission won't officially begin until you walk up to Rhett's equipment shop and talk to him directly. Follow the orange marker on your mini-map to find his storefront. During the conversation, Rhett mentions some rock fissures and asks Kliff to bring back iron ore. He'll hand you a pickaxe on the spot — hold onto it, because you'll need it for other gathering tasks later.

After the dialogue ends, open your Journal menu, navigate to Faction Quests, then select Hernand Commissions. Rhett's Request will appear there. Press F on keyboard (or Y on controller) to pull up the map, and the game will drop a quest marker on the mining location.

Where to find Iron Ore near Hernand

The closest iron node sits southwest of Hernand, near Anvil Hill. Leave through the town's southern exit and walk west along the path while keeping an eye on the terrain below. You'll reach a spot where you can jump down to the ore deposit. The drop deals a small amount of fall damage — nothing dangerous, but you can take the longer path around the cliff if you'd rather avoid it entirely.

Iron ore deposits look like large, dark grey rocks with a faint metallic sheen. They're hard to miss once you know what to look for. Iron is a common material scattered across Pywel, so you'll encounter plenty more nodes later, but this particular cluster is the most convenient one for the quest.

💡
The iron ore location is close to where you chop Fine Timber for Turnali's Request. If you've picked up both commissions, knock them out in the same trip.

How to mine Iron Ore in Crimson Desert

Crimson Desert's tool controls aren't immediately obvious, so here's exactly how to equip and use the pickaxe.

Step 1: Hold F2 on keyboard (or Left D-pad on controller) to open the equipment wheel. Move the selection arrow to the top-left slot. If you have multiple tools, scroll through them with the mouse wheel until the pickaxe is highlighted, then release F2 to equip it.

Step 2: Stand in front of an iron ore rock and press left mouse button (or RB on controller) to swing the pickaxe. One solid hit is enough to shatter each deposit. For more precise aiming, hold CTRL (or LB on controller) before you strike.

Step 3: Pick up the dropped ore from the ground. Each rock yields a couple of pieces, but they can roll downhill, so grab them quickly. You only need 2 Iron Ore for the quest, though mining extra is worthwhile since iron is used for equipment refinement throughout the game.

Delivering the ore — don't go back to Rhett

This is the part that catches most players off guard. After collecting the ore, your instinct will be to ride back into town and hand it to Rhett. That's wrong. Check the Journal entry for Rhett's Request, and you'll see the delivery target is actually Rhett's assistant, located a short distance south of the mining area at the Equinsher Saddlery. The assistant is easy to identify — he's a large, shirtless man standing outside the saddlery.

Walk up to him, initiate the dialogue, and hand over the iron ore. The quest completes immediately.

⚠️
If you can't find the assistant, open the Journal, go to Faction Quests → Hernand Commissions → Rhett's Request, and use the map function to place a fresh marker on his location.

Rhett's Request is a small errand, but it teaches two systems you'll rely on for the rest of Crimson Desert: tool-based gathering and the Hernand Commissions tracker in your Journal. With 63 total Faction Quests in the Hernand Commissions category, getting comfortable with both early will save you a lot of confusion down the road.
