Crimson Desert Quest List, Types, and Rewards Explained

Crimson Desert Quest List, Types, and Rewards Explained

Crimson Desert is a sprawling open-world action-adventure game developed and published by Pearl Abyss. It launched on March 19, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Mac. With more than 400 missions spanning main story content, side quests, bounties, and dynamic world events, the continent of Pywel is packed with things to do. Quests are also deeply tied to character progression, making even optional missions worth your time.

Quick answer: Crimson Desert's quest rewards feed directly into the skill tree through Abyss Artifacts and a mechanic called "Observing" — there is no traditional XP system, so completing missions (including side content) is the primary way to unlock new abilities.

Every Known Crimson Desert Quest

The full scope of Crimson Desert's 400-plus missions will take time to catalog, but a significant number of quest names have been confirmed through trailers, gameplay showcases, and the game's early hours. These span the opening prologue through several branching story and side quest chains set primarily in the Hernand region, the mountainous area where Kliff's journey begins.

The "For Honor" chain under "Hernand in Chaos" is notably dense, branching into seven sub-quests that take you across the Hernand region. The bounty chain "Outlaws in Hernand" functions differently, tasking you with hunting down three specific targets picked up from notice boards in towns.

Crimson Desert Quest Types

Missions in Crimson Desert vary wildly in scale and structure. You might spend one quest escorting a merchant caravan through bandit territory and the next battling a colossal mechanical dragon called Golden Star. The variety keeps the pacing unpredictable, and the game leans heavily on exploration-driven discovery rather than a rigid quest log.

Quest TypeWhat It Involves
Fetch questsRetrieve specific items for NPCs or your camp
Escort missionsProtect characters or caravans while traveling
Bounty huntingTrack and defeat named targets from notice boards
Open-world random eventsRescue burning houses, stop thieves, save hostages
PuzzlesEnvironmental and logic challenges leading to special items
Boss encountersMajor fights against creatures like White Horn, Reed Devil, and others
Stronghold siegesAssault enemy camps and fortifications
Information gatheringInvestigate leads, speak to NPCs, and piece together clues

Random world events deserve special attention. These are not marked on your map ahead of time. You stumble into them while exploring — a house on fire, a thief sprinting through a market, hostages held in a roadside ambush. Some of these events trigger their own short quest chains with unique rewards.

How to Find and Start Quests

Crimson Desert distributes its missions through several different channels, and many of them reward curiosity over simply following waypoints.

Step 1: Follow the main story thread. Main quests are given from the start of the game and lead naturally from one to the next. After the prologue, you'll be directed through the Hernand region as Kliff searches for his displaced Greymane companions.

Step 2: Check notice boards in towns and cities. Every major settlement has a board displaying bounties and requests. The "Outlaws in Hernand" chain, for example, starts at one of these boards.

Step 3: Talk to NPCs. Many side quests are only available through conversation. Speak to as many characters as you can, especially in new areas you haven't visited before.

Step 4: Interact with environmental objects. Books, notes, and letters scattered throughout the world can trigger quests when you read them. These are easy to miss if you rush through areas without exploring interiors and side paths.

Step 5: Watch for world events. Random encounters in the open world can lead to their own side quest chains. If you see something happening — a fire, a chase, a fight — investigate it.

Quest Rewards and the Skill Tree Connection

Crimson Desert does not use a traditional experience point system. There is no XP bar, no leveling up, and no difficulty slider. Your power comes from two things: your gear and your skills. Quests feed directly into both.

The skill tree is powered by Abyss Artifacts, which you earn by completing missions, solving puzzles, and defeating bosses. Each artifact grants a skill point that can be invested into a branching tree. The tree initially looks modest, but each node breaks down into further sub-options, allowing for deep customization of your combat style across all three playable characters — Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane.

Some skills can only be learned through "Observing" — a mechanic where Kliff witnesses a technique during a specific mission or world event. These skills unlock for free without spending a skill point, but they're permanently missable if you skip the quest where they appear.

This system makes side quests genuinely important. A bounty hunt or a quiet favor for a merchant might be the only opportunity to observe a particular combat technique. Skipping side content doesn't just mean missing story — it means missing abilities.

Gear, Bosses, and Power Progression Through Quests

Since there's no XP, your weapons and armor determine your effective power level. Much of the best gear in Crimson Desert is found in secret locations, guarded by bosses, or locked inside enemy strongholds that you'll encounter during quests. Every weapon is unique — there are no randomized stat rolls or duplicate drops. When you find a sword, it's a specific, named item with fixed properties.

Bosses are a particularly rewarding source of equipment. Some drop their own armor or weapons after defeat. Confirmed bosses include White Horn (a mountain spirit), Golden Star (a giant mechanical dragon), Myurdin (leader of the antagonistic Black Bears faction), Matthias (a captain of the Wandering Freeswords), and Split Horn (a goblin branchmaster). Each of these encounters is tied to specific quest chains or exploration paths.

If you hit a wall on a particular boss or quest, the intended solution is to leave, explore elsewhere, find or upgrade better gear through mining, hunting, crafting, or purchasing from vendors, and then return. You can also stock up on food items to heal through tough fights — the game allows you to carry large quantities of consumables.

The Five Regions and Where Quests Take You

Pywel is divided into five seamless regions, and quests will eventually take you across all of them. Your journey starts in Hernand, a mountainous area, and the majority of early confirmed quests are set here. But the map is fully open — you can travel anywhere at any time, though enemies in distant regions may be far too powerful early on, and your faction reputation might create complications.

RegionDescription
HernandMountainous starting region; home to early story quests and bounties
PyoonNorthern homeland of the Greymane clan
DemenisPolitical center of the continent
DellesiaTechnologically advanced region featuring mechs
Crimson DesertA vast, lawless open expanse

Above the continent float the islands of the Abyss, a separate area filled with secrets and tied to the game's central narrative about restoring mystical balance. Quests related to the Abyss — like "Abyss without Balance" — deal directly with this overarching threat.

Crimson Desert's quest design ties exploration, combat, and progression together more tightly than most open-world games. Because skills and gear are earned through missions rather than passive XP accumulation, every quest you complete — whether it's a massive siege or a quiet errand — has a tangible impact on how Kliff fights and what he can do. The full quest list will continue to grow as players push deeper into Pywel's five regions and the floating Abyss above.
