Crimson Desert's combat system treats weapon base stats almost identically across the board. Whether you're swinging the starter blade or a late-game trophy, the raw numbers barely change. What actually separates a good loadout from a great one is the Abyss Gears embedded in your weapon — and two-handed weapons hold a massive advantage here. Both greatswords and spears accept up to five Abyss Gear slots, compared to three for one-handed swords and just two for shields. That makes two-handers the strongest platform for stacking offensive power in the game.
Quick answer: The Darkbringer (greatsword, Pailune tundra) and Vow of the Dead King (spear, Frostveiled Castle Ruins) are the two strongest two-handed weapons in Crimson Desert. For an early power spike, grab the Hwando from Lioncrest Manor in Hernand — it comes with Abyss Gears pre-installed.

Why two-handed weapons outperform other categories
Greatswords and spears both sit in the S-tier of Crimson Desert's weapon hierarchy, and the reason is straightforward. Five Abyss Gear slots let you pile on critical rate, bonus damage, stamina siphon, and elemental effects far beyond what a sword-and-shield setup can achieve. Greatswords strike a balance between raw power and combo speed that no other two-handed class matches, and their heavy attack grants an invulnerability frame — essentially a built-in dodge you can weave into boss fights. Spears trade a small amount of per-hit damage for rapid thrust combos and excellent knockdown potential, making them ideal for crowd control in fortress assaults and dungeon clears.
All weapons in Crimson Desert can be refined to roughly the same power level, so the real value of any specific named weapon is the unique Abyss Gears it carries. The picks below are ranked by the quality of their embedded gears and how early or reliably you can obtain them.

Darkbringer — How to find it
The Darkbringer sits inside the jaws of a giant skeleton in the frozen tundras of Pailune, southwest of the Silver Mountains. The nearest fast travel point is the White Wastes Sanctuary — head west from there. The trek is long, and the cold is punishing, so make sure your cold resistance is adequate before setting out. Once you pick it up, its heavy attacks summon orbs that deal additional damage, giving it a unique offensive edge no other greatsword offers.

Vow of the Dead King — How to find it
This is one of the most powerful spears in the game, and reaching it requires clearing the Citadel of the Forgotten King challenge gauntlet beneath the Frostveiled Castle Ruins. The ruins sit northeast of Wayward Woods and northwest of the "A" in Pailune on the world map. The underground obstacle course is filled with hazards, so come prepared with healing items and decent gear. The spear's embedded Abyss Gears grant bonus damage against certain enemy types, making it especially effective in specific encounters.

Frozen Anguish — How to find it
Located inside the Spire of Frost in the Demeniss region, northwest of the Deadfire Mountains, the Frozen Anguish is a devastating greatsword locked behind environmental and combat challenges. The area is guarded by Ice Mages, and the extreme cold requires at least level 13 Ice Resistance — level 15 is safer. Inside the spire, you'll need to solve a puzzle sequence to access the treasure chest containing the weapon. Look under the stairs once you reach the final chamber.

Righteous Verdict — How to find it
Another Demeniss find, the Righteous Verdict, is housed in the Demeniss Ancestors Ruins, accessible from the southern part of the region. First, clear and liberate the Nightfell Expedition Camp. South of the camp entrance, you'll find the ruins. Fight through to the end of the dungeon to reach this greatsword, which serves as a solid alternative to the Darkbringer if you haven't made the journey to Pailune yet.

Hwando — Best early-game two-handed weapon
The Hwando is the single best two-handed weapon you can grab in the opening hours. It's locked inside a first-floor room at Lioncrest Manor in the north side of Hernand Town. You'll need a generic Key to unlock the door on the upper floor — you can buy one from the back-alley merchant near the windmill below the church on the south side of town. A Thief's Mask from the same merchant is also helpful for other loot in the manor.
Step 1: Head to the smaller stone building west of the main manor house. All entrances are guarded, but you can climb the exterior wall and enter through a window without being stopped.

Step 2: Once inside, go to the second floor and use your Key on the locked door. This opens into an armory filled with weapon crates.
Step 3: Open the glowing treasure chest inside the room. No Thief's Mask is required for this particular chest. You'll receive the Hwando, which comes pre-loaded with Abyss Gears that boost critical rate, critical damage, and stamina siphon on hit.

Other notable early two-handed options
If you want a spear before reaching the Frostveiled Castle Ruins, the Spear of Righteousness can drop from Bleed Bandits in the Hernand area. The Karin Quarry is a reliable farming spot for this weapon. It's a decent early spear, though it lacks the embedded gears that make the Hwando so dominant at the same stage of the game.
For a free spear with zero combat required, the Warspike Spear can be picked up east of Hernand Town at a Greymane shrine near the river. It doesn't carry any stat advantages over other early weapons, but it's a solid secondary option with good reach and a satisfying strong attack combo.
Later in the story, Rhett's Longsword becomes available by completing Rhett's quest chain in Hernand, and the Golden Vanguard spear drops from defeating the boss Gregor.

Greatsword vs. Spear — Which two-handed type to main
Both weapon types occupy the top tier and accept five Abyss Gear slots, so the choice comes down to playstyle. Greatswords deliver slightly higher per-hit damage and grant an i-frame on heavy attacks, making them forgiving during boss encounters. Spears compensate with faster thrust combos and stronger knockdown effects, excelling in situations where you're surrounded. The Evasive Slash into Counter Stance combo on spears creates a retaliatory defensive stance that punishes incoming attacks as long as your Stamina holds — a technique that makes spear users nearly untouchable once mastered.
Greatswords work well across all three playable characters (Kliff, Damiane, and Oongka), while spears are particularly effective on Kliff and Damiane. Damiane's rapier and musket movesets feel less complete by comparison, so switching her to a spear is a common and effective choice.
Since Abyss Gears can be extracted and re-embedded freely once you unlock the Witch, there's no permanent commitment. Grab whichever two-handed weapons you find first, strip their gears, and slot them into your preferred weapon type as your build develops.
