Crimson Desert's First Puzzle Is Tricky — Here's How to Beat the Ancient Ruins in the Reunion Quest

The "Reunion" quest in Crimson Desert is the 16th main mission and part of Chapter 2's "Unexpected Gift" sub-chapter. It begins right after you finish the Memory Fragment quest inside the Lioncrest Watchtower, and it ends with the game's first real puzzle — three stone discs on a wall that need to be punched in a specific sequence. The game teaches you two new abilities moments before the puzzle, but barely explains how to actually use them to solve it, which has left a lot of players stuck.

Quick answer: Use Force Palm (hold R3 / Right Stick on controller, or the corresponding PC input) to hit the discs in this order: Middle → Right → Left. All three will press into the wall simultaneously, completing the circuit.

Starting the Reunion quest and following Jiji

After watching the memory fragment inside the Lioncrest Watchtower, head outside and walk toward the gate. A cutscene introduces Rulupee, the Shai child whose cat Jiji you helped retrieve earlier in Hernand. Once the cutscene ends, you need to follow Jiji northward toward the Ancient Ruins.

Rather than manually chasing the cat through foliage, hold A (Xbox), X (PlayStation), or Left Shift (keyboard) to let Kliff auto-follow. He handles most of the pathing on his own, but he can occasionally snag on rocks or cliff edges. If that happens, nudge him clear of the obstacle and re-engage the follow command. Jiji leads you north of the Lioncrest Watchtower to a location marked as Ancient Ruins on the map.

Learning Nature's Grasp and Focus

When you arrive at the ruins entrance, a memory fragment — a holographic figure — appears and demonstrates a skill called Nature's Grasp. To learn it, use the Observe command by holding LB (Xbox), L1 (PlayStation), or Ctrl (keyboard). Wait for the "Learning in Progress" bar to fill completely.

Nature's Grasp lets you lift and move certain environmental objects, though it only works on specific interactable items. If the button prompt doesn't appear near something, it can't be moved. Stand near the stone wall blocking the entrance and use Nature's Grasp to lift it open.

Inside the chamber, another memory fragment sits meditating. Observe it the same way to learn the Focus skill. Focus lets you regenerate Spirit by pressing both analog sticks simultaneously on a controller, or X on keyboard. Spirit is the resource you spend when using abilities like Force Palm, so Focus essentially gives you a way to recharge mid-puzzle without waiting.

⚠️
Nature's Grasp and Focus are both taught right before the puzzle, but Nature's Grasp isn't actually used to solve it — it only opens the door. The real solution relies entirely on Force Palm.

Ancient Ruins puzzle solution — Disc order for Force Palm

The puzzle room contains three large stone discs mounted on the wall, each with a line of energy running through it. Your goal is to get all three discs pressed into the wall at the same time so the energy circuit connects.

The catch is that hitting any disc with Force Palm also inverts the position of adjacent discs. If a neighboring disc is pressed in, it pops out. If it's sticking out, it pushes in. This toggle mechanic means random punching won't reliably solve it — you need the right sequence.

Step 1: Face the middle disc and use Force Palm (hold R3 / Right Stick on controller) to hit it. This pushes the middle disc in and flips both the left and right discs.

Step 2: Move to the right disc and hit it with Force Palm. This adjusts the right disc and toggles the middle disc's neighbor state.

Step 3: Move to the left disc and hit it with Force Palm. All three discs should now be pressed into the wall, completing the energy circuit.

If you run low on Spirit between hits, use Focus (both analog sticks or X on keyboard) to recharge before continuing. The puzzle won't reset while you're regenerating.

💡
A common frustration is accidentally hitting two discs at once due to Kliff's targeting. Make sure you're squarely facing a single disc before using Force Palm. If the puzzle doesn't activate after the correct sequence, it likely registered a double hit — step back and try again from the starting position where all discs are in their default state.

Why Force Palm and not Force Axiom

Many players instinctively try Force Axiom on the discs because that ability was used in a similar-looking puzzle at the Abyss Gate earlier in the game. Force Axiom won't work here. The game doesn't explicitly tell you to switch to Force Palm, which is activated by holding down the right stick rather than using the bumper-based Axiom input. If you've been standing in front of the discs wondering why nothing happens, this is almost certainly the reason.

This toggle mechanic — where hitting one element flips adjacent ones — recurs throughout Crimson Desert's Ancient Ruins puzzles across Pywel, so it's worth internalizing now.

Completing the quest and claiming rewards

Once the circuit connects, leave the chamber and find a child named Bilwise wearing green, standing on the cliff edge outside. Talk to them to officially complete the Reunion quest.

Before you leave, interact with the small pillar near the cave entrance to claim an Abyss Cresset. This converts into an Abyss Artifact, which you can spend in the Skills menu to unlock new abilities or boost attributes. The Abyss Cresset also becomes a fast travel point on your map.

RewardEffect
Nature's Grasp (skill)Lift and move specific environmental objects
Focus (skill)Regenerate Spirit by pressing both sticks / X on keyboard
Abyss CressetBecomes a fast travel point and yields an Abyss Artifact
Palmar Pill (x1)Resurrects your character with 30% health
Medium Bag (x1)Unlocks three additional inventory slots

The Meandering Hills Ruins puzzle during Reunion is the first of many Abyss Cresset challenges scattered across the world of Pywel. Each one requires solving a puzzle — ranging from statue rotations to symbol-matching stepping stones to mural decryption — and each rewards an Abyss Artifact plus a new fast travel node. You can track your progress through the Journal under Challenges, in the "Thread in the Forest" tab.
