Demonite Key in The Forge: How to Unlock the Skal Quest and Farm Demonite

Demonite Key sits at the center of one of The Forge’s more demanding mid–late-game objectives. To get it, you first need consistent access to Demonite ore, then complete a short but resource‑heavy quest for the NPC Skal. The bottleneck is not the quest itself, but securing enough Demonite from deep inside the Forgotten Kingdom.

What Demonite and the Demonite Key are used for

Demonite is a Mythic‑rarity ore in The Forge with a 5.5x value multiplier and a sell price of $82.5 per unit. More importantly, it carries an Ore Trait that adds a chance to burn enemies when used in forging. Weapons crafted with enough Demonite gain a burn effect that adds damage over time, which is especially useful for farming enemies for money and resources.

The Demonite Key is tied to the Demon Skal questline. Skal asks for Demonite ore; once you bring him the required amount (three Demonite Ores), he rewards you with the Demonite Key. That turns Demonite from a simple DPS upgrade material into a quest-critical resource.

How to reach the Volcanic Depths in The Forge

Demonite only drops from Volcanic Rocks inside the Volcanic Depths, a dangerous sub‑area of the Forgotten Kingdom. Getting there is the first hurdle.

Step 1: Travel to the Forgotten Kingdom region. Make sure you are prepared for combat, as enemies near the entrance to the Volcanic Depths are significantly stronger than earlier zones.

Step 2: Enter the Ruined Cave in the Forgotten Kingdom. Once inside, stay close to the right‑hand wall as you move forward.

Step 3: Continue following the right wall until you pass under a “DANGER” sign. This marks that you are getting close to the transition down into the Volcanic Depths.

Step 4: Keep hugging the right wall until you find an NPC named Amber. This NPC acts as a landmark that you are in the correct tunnel network.

Step 5: From Amber’s position, look toward the southwest to find a hole in the ground containing two Basalt Veins. Players frequently farm these, so they may already be broken when you arrive.

Step 6: Once the Basalt Veins are gone, drop down into the hole. The fall transitions you directly into the Volcanic Depths, where you’ll find tougher enemies and the glowing Volcanic Rocks that can yield Demonite.

Tip: If other players are around, you may not need to mine the Basalt Veins yourself; wait until they are cleared, then jump down.

Requirements to mine Demonite in the Volcanic Depths

Demonite does not appear as its own ore node. Instead, it has a low chance to drop whenever you break a Volcanic Rock, but you need a strong enough pickaxe to interact with these rocks at all.

Requirement Details
Region Forgotten Kingdom → Ruined Cave → Volcanic Depths
Minimum pickaxe damage At least 100 base damage
Earliest viable pickaxe Lightite Pickaxe
Lightite Pickaxe cost $98,500 (standard), $86,680 (Goblin race)
Demonite rarity Mythic (5.5x value, $82.5 per ore)
Base Demonite drop rate 1 in 3,666 per Volcanic Rock broken

The Lightite Pickaxe is the first tool that meets the 100 base damage requirement. Without a pickaxe of this strength or higher, you cannot mine Volcanic Rocks and therefore cannot obtain Demonite.

How to get Demonite ore efficiently

The base chance for Demonite to drop—1 in 3,666 per Volcanic Rock—is extremely low. To make the Demonite Key quest realistic, you need to stack every luck modifier you can access.

Best ways to increase Demonite drop chances

  • Luck Potions: Use Luck Potions to boost your drop rate. Goblin characters benefit from a discounted price on these potions, making sustained farming less expensive.
  • Dedicated Player skill: Open your inventory, go to Achievements, and equip the Dedicated Player skill. Depending on how long you have played The Forge, this grants a luck bonus between roughly 8% and 40%.

  • Miner Shard runes: Socket Miner Shard runes with the Luck trait into your pickaxe. This adds another multiplicative bump to your Volcanic Rock drop odds.
  • Luck‑boosting races: Choose a race that provides innate luck bonuses. Angel is the standout option, though other races also provide smaller luck gains.
  • Developer luck events: Mine during special in‑game events that temporarily increase global luck. Pairing these events with personal buffs compounds the impact.
  • Luck Totems: Activate Luck Totems for a temporary 25% luck bonus. These can come from certain redeemable codes or be bought with Robux.
Tip: Luck bonuses stack from multiple sources, so combine a Luck Potion, Dedicated Player, Miner Shards, a luck‑favored race, and Luck Totems whenever you commit to a long Demonite farm session.

Method 1: Farming Demonite for the Demonite Key quest

For Skal’s Demonite Key quest, you must deliver three Demonite Ores. With the raw drop rate, this can take a long time if you arrive unprepared.

Step 1: Acquire the Lightite Pickaxe (or a stronger pickaxe with at least 100 base damage) in the Forgotten Kingdom. Goblin players can take advantage of the lower price to reach this requirement sooner.

Step 2: Travel to the Volcanic Depths using the Ruined Cave route described earlier, and clear or avoid enemies along the way so you can mine safely.

Step 3: Before you start mining, activate all available luck modifiers: drink a Luck Potion, equip Dedicated Player under Achievements, attach Miner Shard runes with Luck to your pickaxe, and use a Luck Totem if you have one.

Step 4: Begin breaking every Volcanic Rock you can reach. Focus on areas with dense clusters of rocks to maximize the number of break attempts per minute.

Step 5: Track Demonite drops carefully and do not leave the area until you have at least three Demonite Ores. Since the drop rate is low, expect to commit to multiple farming runs unless you are extremely lucky.

Step 6: Once you have three Demonite Ores, leave the Volcanic Depths and return to Skal to turn them in and receive the Demonite Key reward.

Note: Because the drop rate is fixed per rock, efficiency comes from increasing the number of rocks you can break per buff window and stacking as many luck bonuses as possible, not from any specific “special” rock.

Method 2: Using Demonite beyond the Demonite Key

After you have enough Demonite for Skal’s quest, it is worth continuing to farm the ore for crafting. Demonite’s Ore Trait adds a burn chance to forged weapons when you use enough of it in a recipe, which can significantly increase overall DPS.

Step 1: Keep your Demonite farming setup intact (High‑damage pickaxe, luck buffs, Luck Totems when available) and continue mining Volcanic Rocks during long sessions.

Step 2: Stockpile Demonite instead of selling it. While it sells for $82.5 each, its long‑term value in weapon forging usually outweighs the immediate cash.

Step 3: When forging new weapons, prioritize builds that use Demonite heavily so they have a strong chance to roll the burn trait. This is particularly effective on weapons used for enemy farming loops, since burn damage scales with how many targets you keep engaged.

Tip: Treat Demonite as a strategic resource rather than a one‑off quest item. The same ore that unlocks the Demonite Key also helps build a stronger late‑game farming kit.

Going straight into the Volcanic Depths unprepared leads to wasted potions, deaths, and very slow progress toward Skal’s three‑ore requirement. A bit of setup smooths out the process:

  • Combat readiness: The Volcanic Depths contain tougher enemies than surface areas. Bring weapons with solid crowd control or mobility tools so you can stay near Volcanic Rocks without being overwhelmed.
  • Economy check: Make sure you can comfortably afford a Lightite Pickaxe and several Luck Potions. If you are short on money, run higher‑yield farming routes first and lean on Demonite’s eventual burn trait to accelerate future income.
  • Race and build planning: If you are still flexible on your race choice, switching to Angel or another luck‑boosting race before starting long Demonite sessions can save time in the long run.
  • Timing with events: When possible, align your Demonite grind with luck‑boosting events. Combining event bonuses with your personal luck stack makes the 1‑in‑3,666 odds more manageable.

Once you understand how to reach the Volcanic Depths, meet the 100 base damage requirement, and stack luck bonuses, the Demonite Key becomes a question of persistence rather than mystery. Farm three Demonite Ores for Skal to claim the key, then keep mining to turn Demonite into one of the most valuable forging materials in your arsenal.
