Covert Commissions in Duet Night Abyss are built for targeted farming. Instead of hoping for random drops, you pick a Secret Letter tied to the character, weapon, or Demon Wedge you want, clear a rotating mission, and then choose one reward from three options rolled from that letter’s pool. There’s no entry cost, the objectives rotate hourly, and difficulty scales up so you can run as often as you’re able.

Unlock Covert Commissions (side quest: “Go, Geniemons!”)

Covert Commissions unlock after completing the side quest “Go, Geniemons!” Once it’s done, a Covert tab appears in the Combat menu, and a Covert Commissions section is added to the Shop. Missions in this feature start at level 40, so plan to advance the main story and strengthen your starter build before grinding consistently.

Key behavior:

  • Rotates every hour: objective types move between the three categories but rewards stay tied to the Secret Letter you selected.
  • No stamina or currency cost: run as much as you want.
  • Difficulty scaling: higher tiers introduce stronger or different enemy sets.

Secret Letters and how the rewards roll

A Secret Letter defines the loot pool for your run. Each letter targets exactly one character, weapon, or Demon Wedge and contains six possible rewards across three rarities. The top-rarity entry is the character Thoughts or the blueprint you’re chasing; the remaining items are upgrade materials for that same target.

  • Before starting a run, select one Secret Letter.
  • After you clear the mission, you’ll see three random items from that letter’s six-item pool and pick one to keep.
  • Characters unlock with 30 Thoughts. Weapons and Demon Wedges require a blueprint once, then materials from the same letter to craft.

Covert Commissions are split into three modes that map to letter types:

  • Order: Character Secret Letters
  • Neutral: Weapon Secret Letters
  • Chaos: Demon Wedge Secret Letters
Tip: New-character Secret Letters can be time-gated to specific modes for a period before entering broader pools, so check what’s currently featured in endgame activities if you’re targeting the latest releases.

Where to get Secret Letters (and Clues)

You obtain one Secret Letter by exchanging 10 Secret Letter Clues in the Shop’s Covert Commissions section. Clues come from a wide set of activities, with a steady cadence from daily and weekly objectives and larger bursts from limited modes. Common sources include:

  • Daily quests and daily commissions (first-time clears can grant Clues)
  • Weekly modes such as Nocturnal Echoes (bosses) and Mystic Maze
  • Limited-time endgame events like Immersive Theater during their refresh window
  • Quests, achievements, Trial Rank rewards, and multi-phase objectives like Demon Wedge Caskets

Once you’ve exhausted early bonuses, expect the loop to be: earn Clues, buy the letter you want, run Covert Commissions, and pick targeted rewards until you finish a character’s 30 Thoughts or secure a weapon/Demon Wedge blueprint and its materials.

Where to access commissions

Once unlocked, commissions are always available from multiple entry points:

  • Open the Combat menu (or main menu) and select the commission category
Note: Standard and Manual commissions have no attempt limits. Only Bounty Commissions restrict weekly reward claims.

Why Covert Commissions matter for progression

Characters, weapons, and Demon Wedges are obtainable without gacha by committing time to systems like Covert Commissions. Because each run lets you pick from a short list tied to your chosen Secret Letter, you’re always moving toward an explicit goal: 30 Thoughts for a character, or the one blueprint you need for a weapon or wedge. Layer that on top of free entry and hourly rotation, and you have a predictable path to build the team you want—so long as you can clear at the required difficulty.

If you’re early in the story, prioritize pushing main quests until commissions and the Covert Shop are unlocked and your primary character is strong enough to handle level 40 missions. From there, the loop is straightforward: earn Clues, buy the right letter, run commissions, and select the best reward every time.
