Duet Night Abyss ditches character gacha for a system you can target and grind. All characters and weapons are free to unlock, and progression is built around farming specific items rather than pulling on a banner. The result is a clear path to the character you want, without roulette.

Download and availability

The game is live via the official site, which serves as the primary download hub. If you’re starting fresh, grab the client from the Duet Night Abyss website: duetnightabyss.dna-panstudio.com. The Steam store listing currently shows “to be announced” for availability, so expect PC storefront rollout timing to vary by platform.

Duet Night Abyss character unlock system (Secret Letters and Thoughts)

Character acquisition has two core currencies:

  • Character Secret Letters — character‑specific items used to start targeted challenges.
  • Thoughts — a character’s fragments; collect enough to claim the unit.

You’ll earn Secret Letter Clues from everyday play and convert them into Character Secret Letters for the exact unit you want. You then spend those Secret Letters to run challenges that award that character’s Thoughts. First‑time ownership requires a fixed number of Thoughts; additional copies use the same currency.

Farm Secret Letter Clues and exchange for Character Secret Letters

Secret Letter Clues are a routine drop from Daily Commissions and other quests, and you can also pick them up from achievement milestones. Exchange rate matters: 10 Secret Letter Clues convert into 1 Character Secret Letter of your choice in the in‑game shop. Because each Secret Letter is tied to a single character, the exchange step is where you “hard target” a unit.

Note: Extra Character Secret Letters aren’t a dead‑end—recycle them back into Secret Letter Clues if you change targets.

Run Covert Commissions to earn Thoughts and unlock characters

With Character Secret Letters in hand, go to Combat → Covert Commissions, pick the Secret Letter for the character you want, and launch the mission. When you finish, choose Thoughts among the reward options. Your first ownership unlock triggers when you reach the threshold of Thoughts for that character; this appears under Reminiscence.

Key points:

  • Covert Commissions consume the corresponding Character Secret Letter.
  • Pick Thoughts as the reward to progress ownership; other rewards won’t advance unlock count.
  • You need a fixed number of Thoughts for the first unlock; subsequent copies also cost Thoughts.

Where to farm Secret Letters: Nocturnal Echoes and Immersive Theatre

Beyond exchanging Clues, two combat modes drop Character Secret Letters directly:

  • Nocturnal Echoes — drops Secret Letters for the full character roster.
  • Immersive Theatre — drops Secret Letters for the newly released character during a limited window.

This cadence lets you expedite new releases via Immersive Theatre, while Nocturnal Echoes remains the ongoing source for the broader cast.

Buy characters with Thoughts in the in‑game shop

If you’ve stockpiled Thoughts, you can skip some farming and purchase characters outright. The cost is 150 Thoughts per character in the shop. This path trades time in Covert Commissions for a direct pickup once you’ve secured enough Thoughts through other activities.

Story unlocks from quest progression

Some characters are granted as you clear key story quests. Expect at least one unit to join during main story progression without going through the Secret Letter/Commission loop.

What “free to unlock” means for weapons and progression

The game’s combat is built around switching between melee and ranged loadouts within a 3D action framework, with two protagonists whose stories converge from different sides of the world. Weapons follow the same philosophy as characters: you gather the necessary materials and craft at your own pace, rather than relying on chance. The system supports either focusing on a small core team or experimenting with broader lineups.

How this feels in day‑to‑day play

Daily Commissions and quests feed your Secret Letter Clue balance; you convert those into the exact Character Secret Letters you need. You then run Covert Commissions, always selecting Thoughts as the payout to advance that character’s ownership counter. Nocturnal Echoes and Immersive Theatre add a drip of Letters without using Clues, with the latter accelerating the newest addition to the roster. If you’d rather skip some runs, the shop turns saved Thoughts into an immediate unlock at a fixed cost.

Once you’re in, the loop is predictable: pick a target, farm the right Letters, turn them into Thoughts, and claim the character. That clarity—paired with weapon crafting and multi‑loadout combat—makes roster building a matter of time and priority, not luck.
