Character unlocks in Duet Night Abyss are deterministic. You target a character, complete objective tracks, and claim them—no gacha or stamina timers. The fastest route early on is the Secret Letter system, backed by guaranteed launch-event characters and a few story joiners.

Unlock characters with Secret Letters (deterministic path)

The Secret Letter system is the core way to recruit specific characters by playing. Letters are character-specific, and their track converts your playtime into guaranteed unlocks via character “Thoughts.”

Step 1: Open the character acquisition menu and select the Secret Letter track for the character you want. Setting a target ensures your play contributes to that one unit.

Step 2: Earn Secret Letter Clues from Daily Commissions and regular quests. These routine tasks steadily supply the currency you’ll convert into Letters.

Step 3: Exchange Clues for character-specific Secret Letters in the in-game shop. The exchange rate is 10 Secret Letter Clues for 1 Secret Letter.

Step 4: Go to Combat → Covert Commissions and select the Secret Letter you want to run. This launches the activity tied to that character’s track.

Step 5: When rewards are offered, choose Thoughts to progress your unlock. Thoughts are the direct tally toward claiming a unit.

Step 6: Accumulate 30 Thoughts for a first-time unlock, then claim the character via Reminiscence. This grants the character to your roster.

Step 7: Farm Letters directly through game modes when available. Nocturnal Echoes can drop Letters for all characters, while time-limited Immersive Theatre focuses drops on the current new character.

Step 8: Recycle any extra Secret Letters back into Secret Letter Clues if you want to retarget another unit. This keeps progress flexible without wasted items.

Guaranteed launch characters (event claim tracks)

At launch, several characters are free through event claim tracks. Prioritize these before longer grinds to round out a functional team quickly.

CharacterHow to get at launch
BerenicaClaim via launch events.
RebeccaClaim via launch events.
OutsiderClaim via launch events.
Daphne & LisbellClaim via launch events.
TruffleClaim via launch events.
FilbertClaim via launch events.
Psyche FinaFarmable route at launch (includes weapon track).

Step 1: Open the Events section on the main menu and look for launch-labeled claim tracks. Immersive Theatre banners often highlight limited-time tracks.

Step 2: Activate the tracks and complete the listed tasks to hit milestones. Claim each reward as soon as it’s available to avoid capping out.

Step 3: Finish character-awarding tracks first, then clear remaining event tasks for materials and gear. This gets you ready for harder content faster.

Farm characters and weapons (no gacha, no stamina gates)

Repeatable activities and event modes also unlock characters and their signature weapons. At launch, Psyche Fina features a clear farm path alongside a weapon track.

Step 1: Set your target (character or weapon) in the relevant menu to ensure activities credit the correct track. This prevents splitting progress.

Step 2: Route your daily and weekly runs through modes that advance both character and weapon tracks. Aligning objectives shortens the total grind time.

Step 3: During launch, focus on highlighted event modes to accelerate progress. These windows typically offer generous drops and milestone rewards.

Story progression unlocks (early timeline)

Some characters join as you advance the main campaign. Expect these to arrive just by playing through key chapters.

CharacterWhen unlocked in story
MargieFirst companion early in the story.
Berenica, RebeccaShortly after reaching Sanctuary, the hub area.
OutsiderLater as the campaign advances.
Truffle & FilbertLater as the campaign advances.

Step 1: Play the main story until your first companion joins (Margie). This happens early, so don’t detour yet.

Step 2: Push to Sanctuary, the main hub, to trigger Berenica and Rebecca. Unlocking them stabilizes your early roster.

Step 3: Continue the campaign to bring in Outsider and the duo Truffle & Filbert. These arrivals broaden roles and weapon coverage.

Buy characters in the shop with Thoughts

If you prefer a direct purchase, the in-game shop lets you exchange Thoughts for characters. This approach is useful when event tracks aren’t live or you need a specific unit immediately.

Step 1: Open the Shop and navigate to the character exchange section. Confirm the character you intend to buy.

Step 2: Spend 150 Thoughts to purchase the character. Ensure you have enough Thoughts before committing.

Step 3: Reserve shop exchanges for must-have picks or finishing a roster gap. Event claims and Secret Letters cover most needs without spending Thoughts.

Build a balanced early roster (elements, weapons, roles)

Use your free claims to cover different elements, weapon types, and roles. A balanced team cuts retries by improving survival and control while keeping damage high.

CategoryOptions
ElementsPyro, Anemo, Hydro, Lumino.
WeaponsSword, Dual Pistols, Whipsword, Assault Rifle.
RolesDPS, Support, Control, Heal.

Step 1: Choose one primary DPS with a weapon you enjoy, so your main damage loop feels natural. Comfort raises clear consistency.

Step 2: Add either Control or Heal to stabilize fights. Control reduces incoming damage; Heal extends uptime on tougher bosses.

Step 3: Fill the third slot based on the content you’re clearing that day. Swap flex picks to address mechanics or damage checks.

Fast start plan (day one to week one)

Follow this sequence to lock in guaranteed units quickly and channel your farming time efficiently.

Step 1: Install the game from the official site at duetnightabyss.herogame.com when it’s live in your region. Set up your account and confirm platform settings.

Step 2: Complete the tutorial and open Events to claim day-one rewards. Early resources speed up your first upgrades.

Step 3: Activate your top-priority Secret Letter track before starting routine play. This ensures every run feeds that unlock.

Step 4: Enter highlighted launch events (including Immersive Theatre) and work through milestone tasks. Claim character rewards the moment they unlock.

Step 5: Align repeatable farming with both your character and weapon targets—for example, Psyche Fina and their weapon track at launch. This shortens time-to-team completion.

Playtime translates directly into characters here. Set a target, clear the launch claims, and keep your farming focused—you’ll have a solid trio in just a few sessions.
