Mutations in Abyss are visual alterations that spawn randomly on fish throughout the game's underwater regions. Each mutation applies a specific multiplier to a fish's base sell price when you turn it in to the Kraken, ranging from a painful 0.33x penalty all the way up to an 8.5x windfall. Beyond money, mutations also affect fish weight and speed stats. Spotting them quickly — and knowing which ones to prioritize — is one of the fastest ways to build wealth in the game.
Quick answer: The three highest-value mutations are Abyssal (8.5x), Angelic (7.77x), and Shadow (6.66x), all of which can spawn in every region. The Poop mutation (0.33x) is the only one that actively reduces a fish's value.

How mutations work
Any fish species in Abyss can spawn with a mutation. Mutated fish look physically different from their normal counterparts — a Rock Tang, for example, has a rough, stony texture that sets it apart from a regular Tang. You can identify mutations visually while swimming, but equipping the Radar (available at Richard's bestiary stall in Forgotten Deep) makes the job much easier. The Radar displays the mutation name above the fish along with a red outline, so you never have to guess.
Once you catch a mutated fish, hovering over it in your inventory shows the exact multiplier applied to its sell price. Mutations are not tied to specific fish species — a Clownfish, a Shark, or a Whale can all roll the same mutation. Catching a mutated fish works identically to catching its normal version, so you don't need special gear beyond what the base fish already requires.

All standard mutations and multipliers
The table below lists every permanent (non-event) mutation currently in Abyss, sorted from lowest to highest multiplier. Six of these mutations are region-locked, meaning they only appear in a specific area. Everything else can spawn anywhere.
| Mutation | Multiplier | Location | Visual cue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poop | 0.33x | Anywhere | Brown color, green clouds |
| Rock | 1.0x | Anywhere | Rough, rocky texture |
| Coral | 1.1x | Anywhere | Blue and dull red coloring |
| Moss | 1.1x | Anywhere (common in Forgotten Deep) | Greenish, stony look |
| Metal | 1.2x | Anywhere | Metallic grey sheen |
| Sand | 1.25x | Ancient Sands only | Sandy texture and color |
| Albino | 1.3x | Anywhere | Pale white body |
| Transparent | 1.35x | Anywhere | See-through appearance |
| Cactus | 1.45x | Ancient Sands only | Green and yellow coloring |
| Spirit | 1.7x | Spirit Roots only | Teal, translucent body |
| Fossil | 1.75x | Ancient Sands only | Bony texture |
| Golden | 2.0x | Anywhere | Gold body with dollar signs |
| Negative | 2.0x | Anywhere | Inverted colors |
| Fairy | 2.3x | Spirit Roots only | Glowing pink |
| Invisible | 2.4x | Anywhere | Faint outline only |
| Neon | 2.8x | Anywhere | Glowing body |
| Ultraviolet | 3.6x | Anywhere | Purple, transparent with visible outline |
| Rooted | 4.2x | Spirit Roots only | Pale green with glowing green particles |
| Shadow | 6.66x | Anywhere | Transparent black body, red eyes |
| Angelic | 7.77x | Anywhere | Bright yellow glow |
| Abyssal | 8.5x | Anywhere | Deep blue body with glowing parts |

Limited-time event mutations
Abyss occasionally introduces temporary mutations tied to in-game events. During the Valentine's 2026 event, two additional mutations became available. Both spawn anywhere in the game world and feature pink coloring with heart-shaped particles.
| Mutation | Multiplier | Visual cue |
|---|---|---|
| Cupid | 1.4x | Shades of pink, heart particles |
| Lonely | 2.0x | Bright pink, heart particles |
Cupid-mutated fish are required for the Big Boss quest chain during the Valentine's event. Lonely mutations are rarer but carry a solid 2.0x multiplier, making them worth grabbing whenever they appear.

Region-locked mutations and where to farm them
Six mutations only appear in a single region. If you need them for quests or profit, you have to travel to the right area.
Ancient Sands is home to Sand (1.25x), Cactus (1.45x), and Fossil (1.75x). Fossil is the most valuable of the three, and its bony texture makes it fairly easy to spot. Note that catching Fossil fish does not guarantee extra fish bones as a drop.
Spirit Roots hosts Spirit (1.7x), Fairy (2.3x), and Rooted (4.2x). Rooted is extremely rare but carries the highest multiplier of any region-locked mutation. You can identify it by a pale greenish hue and small glowing green particles drifting off the fish.
Forgotten Deep is where Moss mutations appear most commonly, though Moss can technically spawn anywhere. If you're hunting specifically for Moss fish, Forgotten Deep gives you the best odds.

Best mutations for making money fast
Shadow is widely considered the most practical high-value mutation to target. At 6.66x, it's not the absolute highest multiplier, but it spawns more frequently than Angelic or Abyssal. Shadow fish are recognizable by their transparent black bodies and glowing red eyes, which makes them relatively easy to pick out even without a Radar. Farming Shadow mutations across any region is one of the most reliable money-making strategies in the game.
Abyssal and Angelic mutations offer 8.5x and 7.77x, respectively, but they are exceptionally rare. When you do spot one, drop everything and catch it — a single Abyssal mutation on a high-value fish species can be worth more than an entire inventory of normal catches. Server hopping (leaving and rejoining different servers) is the most common technique players use to increase their chances of encountering these top-tier mutations.

Mutations to avoid
The Poop mutation is the only one that actively hurts your earnings. With a 0.33x multiplier, it cuts a fish's sell price to roughly a third of its base value. Unless you're collecting it for completionist purposes, skip any fish with a brown body and green clouds drifting off it.
Rock sits at exactly 1.0x, meaning it provides zero bonus. It adds a rough texture to the fish, but no extra cash. Coral and Moss both offer a marginal 1.1x bump — better than nothing, but not worth going out of your way for unless a quest specifically requires them.

Spotting mutations without a Radar
Some mutations are easy to identify visually. Golden fish have an unmistakable gold sheen with dollar signs floating around them. Negative fish display inverted colors that stand out sharply against the ocean backdrop. Neon fish literally glow. Abyssal fish have a deep blue body with luminous accents.
Others are trickier. Invisible mutations leave only a faint outline, making them nearly impossible to see in murky water. Metal mutations can blend in if the base fish is already silver. Rock mutations add texture without changing color, so they're easy to swim right past. For these harder-to-spot variants, the Radar is invaluable — it tags every mutated fish with its name and a red highlight regardless of how subtle the visual change is.
Mutations add a layer of profitable randomness to every dive in Abyss. Prioritize Shadow, Angelic, and Abyssal whenever they appear, farm region-locked mutations like Rooted and Fairy when you're already in Spirit Roots, and keep your Radar equipped to catch the ones your eyes might miss. The multiplier difference between a normal fish and a high-tier mutated one is enormous — and over time, that gap compounds into a serious cash advantage.
