Everything You Need to Know to Start Fighting in Alternate Battlegrounds

Alternate Battlegrounds is a PvP fighting game on Roblox built around characters from Undertale and its fan-made alternate universes. You pick a fighter, jump into an open arena, and duel other players using a mix of melee attacks, projectiles, teleports, and character-specific abilities. There's no progression system, no leveling, and no permanent unlocks — just raw combat skill. The game received a significant rework in March 2026, reshaping how many of its systems work.

Quick answer: Learn the three-option combat loop (LMB beats guard break, block beats LMB, guard break beats block), master teleport blocking, and start with Frisk or X-Event if you want a forgiving learning curve.

Alternate Battlegrounds Controls and Keybinds

The control scheme follows a standard PvP layout, but a few binds — particularly teleport and lock-on — are critical to competitive play. Console players must use a keyboard and mouse to play properly; native controller support is not available in the current version of the game.

ActionKeybind
Melee AttackLeft Click (LMB)
BlockF
TeleportR
Switch ModeQ / E
Skills1–9
RunLeft Shift
Lock On TargetL or Middle Mouse Button
DashDouble tap W, A, S, or D
SprintHold movement direction after dashing

Lock-on is one of the most useful tools in the game. It forces your camera to track an opponent, which makes it far easier to land attacks and react to their movement. Get comfortable toggling it on and off during fights.

Mana, Stamina, and HP — Core Resource Bars

Three resource bars govern everything you do in a fight. Mana fuels your skills and certain actions like teleporting. Stamina determines how long you can stay mobile and also affects how quickly you recover from knockdowns — lower stamina means longer time spent on the ground. HP is your health pool; when it hits zero, you either transition to your next phase (if your character has one) or die.

Managing mana is especially important. If you burn through it recklessly on big moves, you won't have enough left to follow up when an opening appears. Experienced players watch their opponent's mana bar closely and punish when it's low, since a mana-depleted fighter can't execute full combos.

Playable Fighters and Their Stats

Each fighter in Alternate Battlegrounds draws from a different corner of the Undertale fan universe. They vary wildly in HP, attack power, defense, and playstyle. Characters are not permanent picks — you can switch freely from the main menu between matches.

Sans (Undertale)

StatValue
HP1
ATK1
DEF1

Modes: Bones, Blasters, Telekinesis

Sans has the lowest raw stats of any character, but compensates with two unique passive mechanics. His dodge bar lets him automatically evade all incoming attacks until it depletes, at which point he becomes extremely vulnerable. His attacks deal Karma damage, a form of true damage that ignores enemy defense and drains health over time. The more Karma stacks on a target, the faster it ticks. Sans also has the fastest LMB attacks, the longest teleport distance, and the lowest teleport end-lag in the game, making teleport-into-melee a genuinely viable hit-and-run tactic. His phase dash grants invincibility for its full duration and can create visual mixups because the camera takes a moment to catch up to rapid directional changes.

⚠️
Sans is a high-skill, high-reward fighter. His 1 HP means a single mistake after your dodge bar empties is instant death. Not recommended for beginners.

Asgore (Undertale)

StatValue
HP280
ATK60
DEF240

Modes: Fire, Trident

Asgore is the tankiest fighter in the game with the highest HP and defense. His attacks apply burn debuffs in two flavors. Short Burning deals damage over ten seconds. Full Burning lasts twice as long and also reduces the target's attack and defense stats, making it a powerful tool for wearing down opponents. The trade-off is that every move in Asgore's kit has noticeable end-lag, which means he relies heavily on universal options like blocking and LMB to create openings. His T1 ability is an unreactable block-break, forcing opponents to stay mobile rather than turtling behind block.

Frisk (Glitchtale)

StatValue
HP99 → 180 (Phase 2)
ATK150 → 225 (Phase 2)
DEF200 → 155 (Phase 2)

Frisk starts with a Determination Shield that absorbs damage for roughly twenty hits before breaking. The moveset revolves around sword slashes, projectiles, counters, and dash attacks. When Frisk transitions to Phase 2, attack power jumps significantly and stronger moves unlock, including an ultimate explosion attack that deals massive damage. Frisk excels at close range thanks to multiple guard break abilities (Determination 1 and Determination 3), but has weaker long-range pressure compared to characters like Sans. Frisk is widely considered the most beginner-friendly fighter due to strong damage output and a balanced kit.

X-Event (X!Tale / Underverse)

StatValue
HP100 → 180 (Phase 2)
ATK65 → 75 (Phase 2)
DEF220 → 190 (Phase 2)

Modes: Normal, Knives (Phase 1) / Normal, Overwrite (Phase 2)

X-Event is a versatile fighter who switches between ranged bone attacks and close-range knife combat. In Normal mode, bone and blaster summons apply mid-range pressure. Knives mode provides aggressive melee tools, including a command grab, teleport attacks, and guard breaks. Phase 2 dramatically increases both offensive power and survivability, adding the Overwrite moveset with healing, powerful cutscene attacks, and a devastating ultimate. X-Event's combos use relatively little mana, and high stamina lets him apply sustained pressure. Easy combos and well-rounded stats make X-Event another solid pick for newer players.

Additional Fighters in the Roster

Beyond the four fighters above, Alternate Battlegrounds includes several more characters with distinct playstyles.

FighterUniverseArchetypeSkill Floor
GT!GasterGlitchtaleAll-rounder with heal and low cooldownsHigh
GT!FriskGlitchtaleSimple kit, lower combo damageLow
SSCharaStoryShiftGlass cannon with multi-phase scalingHigh
X!FriskX!TaleAggressive glass cannon with block-bypassesLow-Medium
The Fun GangDeltaruneTag-team fighter (Kris, Susie, Ralsei)High

GT!Gaster stands out for extremely low ability cooldowns, a built-in heal, and neutral tools that are nearly impossible to react to at close range. The Fun Gang operates as a three-character tag team where Kris starts combos, Susie deals damage, and Ralsei provides support — losing members weakens your combo potential until a Last Stand phase triggers. SSChara gains 100 ATK in Phase 3 at the cost of a bleedout mechanic that forces constant aggression to stay alive.

How Teleporting Works

Press R to teleport near your cursor position. If you have an enemy locked on, the teleport places you directly in front of them instead. Teleporting consumes a small amount of mana and temporarily interrupts both stamina and mana recovery. The range is limited — you cannot cross the entire map in a single teleport.

📌
Not every character has teleport from the start. Some fighters unlock it only in later phases, and a few never get it at all.

How to Challenge Players to 1v1 Duels

Type /challenge USERNAME or /1v1 USERNAME in the chat to send a duel request. Once accepted, both players teleport to a private arena. Do not send challenges while you're in active combat — attempting to challenge someone while combat-tagged will kill you instantly.

Combat Mechanics That Define Every Fight

Several systems interact during combat, and understanding them separates beginners from experienced players.

Clashing

When two players land melee attacks at the exact same moment, a clash occurs. Both players get pushed back slightly, and neither is stunned. Only melee (LMB) attacks can trigger clashing — skills and projectiles do not clash.

Warning Moves

Attacks marked with an exclamation icon signal that a powerful move is incoming. Some warning moves target enemies directly, while others are self-buffs. Targeted warning moves can be blocked or countered if you react quickly enough.

Blocking and Perfect Blocking

Pressing block while an opponent's attack connects negates all damage. Pressing block at the exact moment an LMB lands triggers a perfect block, which stuns the attacker briefly and opens them up for a punish combo. Mastering the timing on perfect blocks is one of the fastest ways to improve.

Karma Damage (Sans-specific)

Rather than dealing direct damage, Sans's attacks apply Karma, which slowly drains enemy health over time. The drain rate increases as more Karma stacks accumulate, making prolonged fights increasingly dangerous for Sans's opponents.

Dodge Mechanic (Sans-specific)

Sans passively evades all attacks until his dodge bar empties. Once it reaches zero, he takes damage normally. The dodge bar does not regenerate mid-fight, so every hit absorbed brings Sans closer to vulnerability.

Burning (Asgore-specific)

Asgore's attacks inflict burn. Short Burning ticks damage for ten seconds. Full Burning lasts twenty seconds and also reduces the target's attack and defense stats, compounding Asgore's advantage over time.

The Three-Option Combat Loop

Most fights in Alternate Battlegrounds revolve around a rock-paper-scissors interaction between three core options.

Combat OptionCountered By
LMB AttackBlocking
BlockingGuard Break
Guard BreakLMB Attack

Recognizing which option your opponent favors gives you a massive edge. If someone constantly teleports in and swings, blocking will let you perfect-block and punish. If they rely on guard breaks after teleporting, a quick LMB interrupts the startup. In the worst case, simultaneous melee attacks cause a clash, which still prevents the opponent from getting a free combo.

Practical Tips for Winning More Fights

Block Immediately After Opponent Teleports

Teleport engages are extremely common. Most players teleport directly into melee range to start combos or attempt guard breaks. Blocking right after an opponent teleports gives you a chance to perfect-block their incoming attack and punish with your own combo. If they guard break instead, quickly switch to LMB to interrupt.

Watch Your Opponent's Mana

A mana-starved opponent cannot execute full combos. If you notice their mana bar is low, you can play more aggressively, knowing their punish potential is limited. Conversely, avoid burning all your own mana on flashy moves when a simpler combo would secure the same advantage.

Stick to Simple Combos Until You're Consistent

Dropping a complex combo mid-execution often leaves you wide open for a punish. A reliable basic combo that you land every time does more cumulative damage than a flashy string you fumble half the time.

Use Neutral Chip to Deny Recovery

After landing a combo, you'll often regenerate your resources before your opponent does. Low-endlag moves thrown in neutral during this window force the opponent to either tank the chip damage, block (interrupting their own recovery), or dash away. It's not about the damage — it's about keeping them resource-starved.

Movestack Out of Blockstun

If someone is pressuring your block with repeated LMB attacks, you can try jumping and using a fast startup stunning move simultaneously to escape blockstun and start your own combo. This is harder against characters with fast LMBs, so the timing depends on your opponent's attack speed. Asgore's T2/T1, Sans's Bl1, and Gaster's Dt3/Dt4 are common moves used for this technique.

Skins and Cosmetics

Skins are purely cosmetic and earned through kill milestones on specific characters. They don't cost kills to equip — reaching the milestone automatically unlocks them. Event skins from past limited-time events are no longer obtainable.

AB:A — The Successor

A successor version called AB:A is in development. Stats will reset for the new version, all existing characters are planned to carry over, and additional fighters will be added over time. AB:A will include proper console support and fixed mobile aiming. Skin designs from the original game will be ported to AB:A, though ownership of those skins will not transfer. The original Alternate Battlegrounds is not being deleted or replaced.

Alternate Battlegrounds rewards patience and matchup knowledge more than raw mechanical speed. Spend time learning what each fighter's moves look like, internalize the three-option combat loop, and focus on consistent execution over style. The rest comes with practice.
