Farming Moss in Roblox Abyss — Where to Fish, Drop Rates, and NPC Quests

Moss only drops from treasure chests in one specific biome, and you'll need over 40 to finish every quest.

Farming Moss in Roblox Abyss — Where to Fish, Drop Rates, and NPC Quests

Moss is a Fragment item in Abyss on Roblox, described in-game as a soft, green plant that grows in damp and shaded places. It cannot be sold, does not drop from Geodes, and has no use outside of NPC quests — but collecting enough of it is essential for progressing through the Spirit Roots biome. The entire process revolves around fishing in one location and hoping for the right chest reward.

Quick answer: Fish in the Spirit Roots biome and collect the treasure chest icon during the fishing mini-game. Each chest has roughly a 50/50 chance of awarding Moss or a Rooted Geode, though Rooted Geodes tend to appear more frequently.

Spirit Roots is the only source of Moss

Moss cannot be obtained anywhere else in Abyss. It will not appear in the Ocean, the Forgotten Deep, Ancient Sands, or any other biome. You must travel to Spirit Roots and fish there exclusively if you want to collect it. While fishing, a treasure chest icon can appear during the reeling mini-game. Successfully grabbing that icon gives you either Moss or a Rooted Geode — there is no way to influence which one you receive on a given catch.

Despite the roughly even split between the two possible rewards, many players report that Rooted Geodes drop noticeably more often than Moss. This means you should expect to spend a fair amount of time fishing before you accumulate a meaningful stockpile.

Tips for increasing your Moss yield

Use Luck Potions. Moss has no formal in-game rarity tag, but its effective drop rate is low. Consuming a Luck Potion raises the chance of treasure chests appearing during the fishing mini-game, which in turn gives you more opportunities to receive Moss.

Target higher-rarity fish. Epic and Legendary fish in Spirit Roots — such as Sailfish and Eyefish — appear to trigger treasure chests more frequently than Common or Uncommon catches. Prioritizing these species can speed up the grind considerably, even though the fish themselves are harder to reel in.

Stay patient and keep fishing. There is no shortcut, crafting recipe, or alternative method. Catching Moss-mutated fish does not award Moss as a material, and cracking open Geodes of any type will never yield it either. The only path is repeated fishing in Spirit Roots.

Which NPC quests require Moss

Three NPCs in the Spirit Roots area ask for Moss across their quest chains. Isolde and Lumi both require varying amounts at different quest stages, and Isaac also needs Moss — specifically for feeding Sunny. You do not need to feed Sunny directly; simply talk to Isaac and hand over the Moss to complete that objective.

Early quests in Spirit Roots ask for small quantities, but the total requirement climbs quickly. To finish every quest currently in the game that calls for Moss, you need to collect more than 40 total. Holding onto every piece you find rather than discarding any is strongly recommended, since there is no other use for the item, and farming it is time-consuming.

Moss the item vs. Moss the mutation

Abyss also has a Moss fish mutation, which is a completely separate mechanic. The Moss mutation is a common visual modifier that covers a fish in green moss and multiplies its sell value by 1.1x. Moss-mutated fish can spawn in every biome, not just Spirit Roots. Catching one of these fish does not give you Moss as a Fragment item — the mutation and the material share a name but have no functional connection.

Can you sell Moss?

No. If you try to sell Moss to the Kraken, the game tells you that you are not holding anything of value. Moss exists purely as a quest turn-in material. Since it takes significant effort to farm and cannot be replaced through any other method, avoid dropping or discarding it from your inventory.

Moss farming in Abyss is straightforward but slow. Fish exclusively in Spirit Roots, grab every treasure chest that appears, use Luck Potions when you have them, and prioritize rare fish to maximize chest spawns. With over 40 Moss needed across all current quests, starting early and banking every piece you find will save you from backtracking later.
