EXPcalibur returns in Dying Light: The Beast, but you won’t pull it from the stone until you assemble eight stone Sigils scattered across Castor Woods. Most can be collected early; two are gated behind main missions. Once you have all eight, you’ll climb to a mount northeast of the Monastery, place the Sigils, defeat a spawned enemy, and then extract the blade.

EXPcalibur unlock requirements and sword site

You need all eight stone Sigils in your inventory. The sword sits on a rocky outcrop northeast of the Monastery. The climb uses obvious vine routes and ledges; circle the formation to find the vertical path that chains the ascent. At the summit you’ll see a ritual layout with the sword lodged in stone and a star-shaped arrangement of stakes where the Sigils are placed.

Place all eight Sigils to trigger an enemy. After you clear the encounter, interact with the sword and hold the prompt; drawing EXPcalibur takes noticeably longer than picking up a standard weapon.

All eight Sigil locations (by region and landmark)

The names below match the symbols you collect. Where relevant, mission locks are noted.

  • The Void — waterfall cave southeast of the Monastery
Head to the waterfalls southeast of the Monastery and climb to the higher platform. Slip into the small opening behind the falls to enter a cave. Fight through a few infected to the back of the cavern, then look left for a small pool. Dive and recover the Sigil from a deer skull submerged in the water.
  • The Moon — hidden camp near the same waterfall
Exit the cave and take the upper path on the right. Look for a narrow crack Kyle can squeeze through. Inside the concealed camp with yellow-leaf trees and a tent, check immediately to your left—The Moon Sigil rests on a wide stone.
  • Witch’s Mark — abandoned cabin east along the river pass
Skirt around the mountain and follow the river into the pass east of the previous spot. At the trail’s end, an abandoned cabin is overrun. Enter and grab the Sigil from the wall to your right as you step inside.
  • Sacrifice — stone slab site further east
Continue east to an open area displaying several stone slabs. Enter the small enclosed nook on the left side of the site, then turn around: the Sacrifice Sigil is mounted on the center slab.
  • Blood — St. Valentine Asylum courtyard fountain
Go to the asylum’s courtyard and check the central fountain; the Sigil is fixed to the structure.
  • Curse — Memorial Hill of Heroes, treeline to the right
From the asylum, head north to Memorial Hill of Heroes. Facing the monument, push into the treeline to the right. You’ll reach a small clearing with exposed roots and a skeleton. Take the Sigil from the skeleton’s mouth.
  • Death — Old Town church crypt (story lock)
This area opens after completing the third main mission, “The Beast Within.” At the church, slip through the small opening immediately to the right of the entrance to reach the crypt. Retrieve the Sigil from the angel statue on the right.
  • Shadow — Cave of Exiles entrance (story lock)
The cave unlocks after the eighth main mission, “Some Like It Dark.” Inside, look near the entrance beside cushions and candles—the Sigil sits on the ground.

How to reach the sword and finish the ritual

  • Travel northeast of the Monastery to the prominent rock formation.
  • Use vine-covered faces to gain the first ledges, then wrap around to find the main climb path.
  • At the summit, place each Sigil on one point of the star arrangement.
  • Defeat the enemy that spawns once all Sigils are set.
  • Hold the interact prompt to draw EXPcalibur from the stone.
Tip: Do this during the day unless you’re comfortable with night chases. Ammo is scarce, so plan for a melee-focused fight.

Story progression notes and timing

  • Accessible anytime: The Void, The Moon, Witch’s Mark, Sacrifice, Blood, Curse.
  • Requires progress: Death (after “The Beast Within”), Shadow (after “Some Like It Dark”).

If you’re just starting out, it’s efficient to sweep the first six Sigils early, then return for Death and Shadow once those missions are complete.

Staying alive while you hunt Sigils

Castor Woods rewards caution and planning. A few practical notes drawn from core systems:

  • Travel by day until you’re confident in chase routes; Volatiles at night can quickly overwhelm you.
  • Use Survivor Sense to spot interactive objects and containers en route; crafting materials add up.
  • Carry lockpicks when exploring; you can craft them for 3x Scrap.
  • Mind durability: repair melee weapons when needed or dismantle them for Scrap if they’re spent.
  • Leverage stealth: crouch takedowns and ledge kicks thin crowds without drawing Virals.
  • Parkour first: scanning for white-painted holds and climbable geometry keeps you mobile and out of kill zones.

Once EXPcalibur is secured, you can pivot to other hidden gear throughout Castor Woods—there are more legendary weapons and oddities tucked behind environmental puzzles, gated doors, and late-game areas. But the sword’s trail begins and ends with these eight Sigils; collect them, make the climb, and it’s yours.
