Finding the Forgotten Temple in Hytale and Unlocking Memories

The Forgotten Temple is one of the first major locations you interact with in Hytale. It unlocks the Memories system, which in turn gates recipes, items, and several long-term progression bonuses. Reaching it early keeps your world from feeling artificially limited and gives you a central hub you will return to often.

Where the Forgotten Temple is in Hytale

Each Hytale world is procedurally generated, so the exact coordinates of the Forgotten Temple change with every seed. However, it follows a few consistent rules that make it straightforward to track down.

It is always close to your initial spawn. When you load into a new world for the first time, the Forgotten Temple is placed in the general vicinity of your starting area. You do not need to cross half the map to reach it, but you should be ready to handle early-game enemies along the way, such as Bears, Wolves, and Skeletons.

It is marked on your map from the start. Open your map and look for a distinctive, cross-like ruined structure icon. That landmark represents the surface ruins that house the entrance to the Forgotten Temple. In many cases, this icon is visible immediately without needing to explore first.

The navigation bar also points you in the right direction. At the top of the screen, the navigation bar shows key waypoints, including beds, death locations, and the Forgotten Temple. The temple’s marker resembles a small white circle surrounded by four arrow shapes, similar to a teleporter symbol. Use this as a compass reference and walk in that direction until the ruins come into view.

Use a waypoint for easier tracking. Once you identify the temple icon on your map, set a waypoint there. This causes the corresponding marker to appear in your compass bar, making it harder to drift off course while you gear up or detour around hostile mobs.

How to prepare before entering the Forgotten Temple

Although the temple is an early-game location, going in completely unarmed can make the first encounter more frustrating than it needs to be. You only need basic gear, but you should secure it before you descend.

Craft a Crude Sword. Before you enter the ruins, collect enough basic materials to make a starter weapon. Open your inventory, highlight the Crude Sword recipe, and craft it using:

  • 2x Plant Fiber
  • 2x Stone Rubble
  • 2x Wood

Move the finished sword to your hotbar to equip it. This weapon is sufficient for the early guardian fight you are about to face.

Bring food and minimal protection. You do not need advanced armor for this sequence, but having a supply of basic food makes it easier to recover from chip damage taken on the way or while dealing with enemies near the entrance. Any early consumables you have on hand are enough.

How to reach the temple portal inside the ruins

Once you are equipped, you can move from the surface ruins down to the portal that leads into the “real” Forgotten Temple.

Step 1: Approach the ruined structure indicated on your map and compass. You are looking for a broken temple-like building with an obvious opening leading inside.

Step 2: Find the entrance with the statue and blue flame. Near one side of the ruins there is an open doorway flanked by a statue and a distinctive blue fire. This marks the correct way in.

Step 3: Walk through the doorway and turn left to find the stairs. Head down this stairway to reach the lower level of the ruins.

Step 4: Continue to the underground chamber with the blue portal. At the bottom, you arrive in a room dominated by a glowing portal. This portal is your path into the main Forgotten Temple area, but it is guarded.

How to deal with the stone golem guarding the portal

A stone golem protects the underground portal. You can either fight it for rewards or avoid it if you only care about reaching the Memories system quickly.

Option 1: Fight the golem with your Crude Sword

Step 1: Equip your Crude Sword and approach the golem to trigger its aggression. Keep your distance initially to read its attack timing.

Step 2: Kite the golem toward the small pond in the chamber. Attack while walking backward so you are not locked in place when it swings.

Step 3: Use the water to your advantage. The golem does not follow you into the pond, which lets you “cheese” the encounter. Move into the water to break pursuit, regain a bit of breathing room, and then step in and out of range to land more hits safely.

Step 4: Use push-blocking sparingly. Holding the right mouse button and then clicking the left mouse button lets you shove the golem away, creating distance when things get tight. This maneuver consumes a chunk of stamina, so reserve it for emergencies rather than spamming it each swing.

Defeating the golem can reward you with emeralds, giving you an early currency boost before you reach the traders deeper inside the temple.

Option 2: Sprint past the golem

Step 1: Wait for a gap in the golem’s patrol or attack animation. When it commits to an attack away from the portal, start your run.

Step 2: Sprint straight for the blue portal. You only need to avoid a couple of hits; the golem will not follow you into the teleporter.

Step 3: Enter the portal as soon as you reach it. Even if the golem swings while you cross, you only need enough health to survive until the teleport activates.

How to unlock Memories with the Heart of Orbis

Stepping through the portal takes you to the true Forgotten Temple, a more expansive interior that serves as a hub for the Memories system and various NPCs.

Step 1: Move forward from the teleport arrival point. You will find traders and creatures scattered along the path. You can ignore them for now and walk straight ahead.

Step 2: Head toward the central statue known as the Heart of Orbis. The structure stands on a raised platform, surrounded by plinths, and emits a blue glow as you get closer.

Step 3: Interact with the Heart of Orbis. On keyboard, press F to activate it. A notification appears in the lower left of the screen confirming that the Memories feature is now unlocked.

At this point, a second tab opens in your inventory. This tab tracks every creature, NPC, and enemy you have recorded as a Memory and becomes a running catalog of your exploration.

How Memories work after you unlock the Forgotten Temple

Once the Heart of Orbis is active, Hytale starts recording your discoveries as Memories. These are both a collection mechanic and a progression currency tied to specific thresholds.

Collecting Memories in the world

You do not need to perform a special action to capture Memories. Simply moving close to creatures, NPCs, and hostile enemies is enough. When a Memory is recorded, a small blue light travels from the subject to your character, and the bottom right of the screen shows which Memory you just acquired.

These entries are then visible in the Memories tab, where you can see how many unique entities you have discovered across your world.

Turning Memories into rewards at the Heart of Orbis

Returning to the Heart of Orbis lets you “submit” the Memories you have gathered and claim milestone rewards. Each total Memory count unlocks a specific package of items and permanent upgrades. The table below summarizes the known thresholds and their rewards.

Memories submitted Rewards
10 3x Decorative Chests, 2x Eternal Seeds
25 3x Decorative Chests, 4x Eternal Seeds, +1 Max Teleporter
50 Morph Potions, 4x Eternal Seeds, +1 Max Teleporter
100 Ancient Gateway, Portal Fragments, Backpack Upgrade 2, 3x Decorative Chests, 2x Eternal Seeds, +2 Max Teleporters
200 Harvest Trophy, 2x Decorative Chests, 2x Eternal Seeds, +2 Max Teleporters

These milestones matter because they expand your ability to move around the world (through extra teleporters), increase your carry capacity, and provide unique structures and items that shape your base and travel network.

What else you can do in the Forgotten Temple

The Forgotten Temple is more than a click-and-leave objective. It functions as an early hub with reasons to revisit beyond Memories.

Trade with temple NPCs. Several traders operate inside the temple, offering specific items that can help with early progression. The emeralds earned from defeating the stone golem can be spent here, making the fight slightly more attractive if you have the time and health to manage it.

Set up an early respawn point. Just across from the trader hut stands a large tree containing a hidden bed. Enter the tree and interact with the bed to claim it as a respawn location. This gives you a convenient, centrally located spawn point without crafting one yourself, which is especially useful while you are still exploring the immediate regions around the temple.

Once you have activated the Heart of Orbis, the Forgotten Temple becomes a natural anchor in your world. It is where you cash in your discoveries, experiment with teleporters and Morph Potions once you unlock them, and access traders without needing to build a full settlement first.

The earlier you locate the ruins near your spawn, handle the stone golem, and activate the Heart of Orbis, the less time you will spend blocked from recipes and upgrades that depend on the Memories system.
