Frigibax in Pokémon Legends: Z-A — How to Unlock, Find, and Evolve It

Frigibax, Arctibax, and Baxcalibur sit at the very end of the Mega Dimension DLC’s progression curve in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. They do not appear in normal Hyperspace Wild Zones while you are playing through the DLC story, and they are locked behind a late post-game feature that adds new five-star Hyperspace areas.

When Frigibax becomes available in Mega Dimension

Frigibax is exclusive to the Mega Dimension DLC and is tied to the DLC’s post-game.

You only gain access to its habitat after all of the following are true:

  • You have defeated and caught Rayquaza in Mega Dimension.
  • You have finished the final DLC story mission, “Hyperspace Mission 17: The Greatest Gift.”
  • “Side Mission 188: Start Special Scanning” has triggered the next in-game day.

Side Mission 188 comes from Corbeau’s side of the story and unlocks a new scanning mode for Hyperspace Lumiose. Completing it enables “special scan” results that can generate level 200, five-star Hyperspace Wild Zones. Those high-end Wild Zones are the only places where Frigibax, Arctibax, and Baxcalibur can appear.

How special scans and five-star Hyperspace Wild Zones work

Special scans are a repeatable, late-game expansion of the Hyperspace system. Once Side Mission 188 is done, you can start rolling for new five-star Hyperspace Battle Zones and Wild Zones.

Step 1: Enter any Hyperspace Zone and complete the listed challenges to earn Research Points. You need 25,000 Research Points to fund each new scan.

Step 2: After you reach 25,000 Research Points, return to Phillipe and request a new scan. The scan can produce either a Battle Zone or a Wild Zone, and the biome and type focus are randomized every time.

Step 3: Check the scan result. You are specifically looking for a five-star Hyperspace Wild Zone with Dragon typing and a Frigibax silhouette on the preview. That combination signals the Frigibax line is present in that zone.

There is no guarantee you will see the correct Wild Zone on the first scan. It may take several rounds of earning 25,000 Research Points and re-scanning before a Frigibax habitat appears. However, other five-star scans are still worth doing, since their battles and capture tasks usually yield enough points to get close to the next 25,000 requirement.

Where Frigibax, Arctibax, and Baxcalibur spawn

Once you hit a five-star Dragon-type Hyperspace Wild Zone that shows Frigibax’s outline, all three stages of the line can appear in that single zone: Frigibax, Arctibax, and Baxcalibur.

Within the zone itself, their exact placement can vary.

  • In some layouts, the three species cluster in one part of the map.
  • In other layouts, Frigibax, Arctibax, and Baxcalibur are spread across the zone, forcing you to cover more ground.

Because this is a five-star area, survey time is tight, and enemy strength is high. It is important to prepare before entering.

How to prepare for the Frigibax Wild Zone

Step 1: Feed Hoopa a five-star donut that extends survey time. Extra time lets you explore the entire Wild Zone and still handle battles and capture attempts without being forced out early.

Step 2: Bring Pokémon that match up well into Ice and Dragon types. Coverage that hits Dragon, Ice, Fairy, and Steel weaknesses helps you weaken targets safely without accidental knockouts.

Step 3: Stock up on high-grade Poké Balls and status tools. All three members of this line have low catch rates even when weakened, and prolonged attempts can easily eat most of your survey clock.

Note: Failing to catch anything before time runs out means repeating the 25,000 Research Point grind and waiting for a suitable special scan result again, so treating each Wild Zone run as a serious attempt pays off.

Capture strategy: which form to prioritize

The game allows you to catch any of the three stages directly in the correct five-star Wild Zone, but the three stages are not equally important from a progression standpoint.

Prioritize Frigibax. All three are difficult to catch, but Arctibax and Baxcalibur are significantly harder to secure. If the timer is ticking down and you have to make choices, focus on getting at least one Frigibax into a ball.

Once you own Frigibax, you can fill out the rest of the line through standard level-based evolution, which removes the need to see Arctibax or Baxcalibur in the Wild Zone again.

Tip: If you do manage to encounter Arctibax or Baxcalibur early in the run, you can attempt them, but do not burn the bulk of your remaining survey time on a single stubborn catch if you still have not secured a Frigibax.

Frigibax evolution levels and typical catch levels

Frigibax follows a straightforward level-up evolution path in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Stage Evolves Into Requirement
Frigibax Arctibax Level 35
Arctibax Baxcalibur Level 54

In five-star Hyperspace Wild Zones, Frigibax and Arctibax are caught at very high effective levels that translate to roughly level 54 in your party. That means:

  • A newly caught Frigibax will be ready to evolve into Arctibax immediately once you trigger evolution.
  • A newly caught Arctibax will also be ready to evolve into Baxcalibur as soon as you choose to evolve it.

How to evolve Frigibax and Arctibax once you have them

With a Frigibax or Arctibax in your party at the required level, evolution is handled through the standard manual evolution flow rather than through items or special conditions.

Step 1: Open your party screen and highlight the Frigibax or Arctibax that is at or above its evolution level (35 for Frigibax, 54 for Arctibax).

Step 2: Select the option to evolve. If the Pokémon already meets the level requirement, the evolve prompt will appear immediately.

Step 3: Confirm the evolution animation. Frigibax becomes Arctibax, and Arctibax becomes Baxcalibur. Once complete, the new form is registered to your Pokédex.

Because five-star Wild Zone catches are already high level, you can often go straight from capture to final form without extra grinding. If you caught both Frigibax and Arctibax in the same run, you can choose which one becomes your first Baxcalibur based on nature, IVs, or personal preference.

Frigibax typing, weaknesses, and role

Frigibax is a dual-type Dragon/Ice Pokémon, the “Ice Fin Pokémon.” Its defensive profile is fragile but distinct.

Interaction Types
Weak (2× damage) Fighting, Rock, Dragon, Steel, Fairy
Resistant (0.5× damage) Water, Grass, Electric
Neutral (1× damage) Normal, Fire, Ice, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Ghost, Dark

On offense, even the base form has access to a wide mix of physical and special moves along both of its STAB types and some Dark coverage, including options like Dragon Claw, Ice Fang, Icy Wind, Ice Beam, Bite, Crunch, Dragon Breath, and Dragon Rush, plus utility moves such as Focus Energy and Protect.

By the time it reaches Baxcalibur, this line offers strong physical Dragon and Ice pressure with flexible coverage and good synergy with common meta picks that appreciate its ability to threaten opposing Dragons and many Flying and Grass types.

Clearing Mega Dimension’s story, completing Side Mission 188, and grinding out a handful of 25,000-point special scans is a significant investment, but you only need one good Frigibax run. Once that first capture is in your party, the rest of the line is a simple pair of level-based evolutions away, and Baxcalibur becomes a permanent fixture in both your Hyperspace Pokédex and any late-game teams that need a powerful Dragon/Ice anchor.
