Crimson Desert's dye system is one of the more confusing customization mechanics in the game. Every region locks its colors behind a specific Dyehouse merchant; grey and black dyes cannot be crafted at a Cauldron, and plenty of players have resorted to using the darkest shade of Deep Red Dye as a stand-in for black. A dedicated Black Dye does exist, though — and getting it requires completing a side quest chain in the northeastern part of the map.
Quick answer: Complete the "Raiders in Muiquun" questline in the Tashkalp region, then purchase Black Dye from the Black Market Vendor that spawns afterward. Apply it at the Varnian Dyehouse (Alton) or through Oliver at your Greymane Camp.

How to Start the Raiders in Muiquun Questline
Travel to the Tashkalp region in the northeast of the map. Once you reach a town there, look for a poster that triggers a side quest chain called "Raiders in Muiquun." This is a multi-part questline, not a single mission, so expect to spend some time working through it. The chain involves several sequential objectives before it concludes.
After you finish the full questline, a Black Market Vendor becomes available in Muiquun. You may need to fast travel away and back to force the merchant to spawn. The vendor sells Black Dye directly — no crafting ingredients required, since Black Dye has no Cauldron recipe.

Where to Apply Black Dye
Owning the dye bottle is only half the process. You first need to open your inventory and select "Use" on the Black Dye to learn it. After that, you need to visit the correct Dyehouse merchant to actually apply the color to your gear. Black Dye falls under the Varnian dye palette, which means you have two options for applying it.
| Dyehouse | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Alton, Varnian Dyehouse | Varnia (far north, past the Great Gate of Urdavah) | Specializes in Spring Green dyes; also handles Black Dye |
| Oliver, Greymane Camp | Your camp (after upgrading 3 times and recruiting Oliver) | Can replicate any Dyehouse you've already visited |
If you use Oliver at your camp, keep in mind that he can only work with color palettes from Dyehouses you've physically visited and unlocked. So if you haven't been to Varnia yet, you'll need to make the trip at least once before Oliver can apply Black Dye for you.

Reaching Varnia
Varnia sits at the far northern edge of the Crimson Desert region, across a large river. Getting there is one of the longest journeys in the game. You'll ride north past Tomasso, through the Great Gate of Urdavah, along the Trader's Expanse, and finally across the Alabaster Bridge to reach the holy city. The Dyehouse itself is somewhat hidden — look for a rocky area above the lower city on the west side where the dye merchant Alton has set up.
Early-Game Workarounds for a Dark Look
If you're nowhere near Tashkalp or Varnia yet, there are a few ways to approximate a dark or black appearance while you progress through the story.
| Method | How to Get It | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Deep Red Dye (darkest shade) | Found at Ford Cabin in Hook Rapids, north of Hernand; also at Sunset Valley or Kharonso Equipment Shop Shed | The bottom-left hues in the Hernandian palette appear very dark grey or near-black on most armor |
| Deep Blue Dye (Delesyia) | Sold by Castiel at the Delesyia Dyehouse | Reads as dark grey/black on many pieces, especially with certain material textures |
| Shadow Grey Dye | Sold by Oliver at Greymane Camp after upgrading camp 3 times and completing the Inksworth Bindery rumor quest | Variations of grey; pairs with the Delesyian Dye palette. Lighter than expected |
The Deep Red Dye trick is the most accessible early on. Grab the bottle from the Ford Cabin in Hook Rapids — it appears as a "???" item on a table upstairs — and use it from your inventory. At the Hernand Dyehouse (run by Theoric, south of town along the Nas River), the very darkest shades at the bottom-left of the red palette will render as a near-black on your armor. It's not a true black, but it's convincing enough until you can reach Muiquun.
Changing the material texture of a dyed armor piece can also push colors darker. Each regional Dyehouse offers its own material options, and Oliver at your camp consolidates all of them once you've visited the corresponding merchants.

Grey Dye and Shadow Grey Dye
Grey and Shadow Grey are separate dyes from Black, and they behave differently. Neither can be crafted — they're obtained as quest rewards or purchased from specific vendors.
Grey Dye is given by Naira during the early Greymane faction quests. Check the faction tab in your journal under Greymanes; the third introductory questline covers dyeing and rewards the basic Grey Dye.
Shadow Grey Dye becomes available from Oliver at your Greymane Camp after you upgrade the camp to level 3 and complete the rumor quest at the Inksworth Bindery to recruit him. Shadow Grey falls under the Delesyian Dye palette, so you'll need to have visited the Delesyia Dyehouse (Castiel) for it to appear in the dye menu. The resulting shades are lighter than many players expect — more of a muted grey than a dark charcoal.

About "Midnight Black Dye"
Some online listings mention a "Midnight Black Dye" supposedly crafted from squid ink, crow wings, and mordant. Players who have completed the main story have not been able to verify this recipe in-game. Mordant in particular has proven nearly impossible to locate, and nobody has reliably confirmed obtaining Midnight Black Dye through crafting. The consensus among players who have finished the game is that this recipe is likely fabricated. Black Dye, Grey Dye, and Shadow Grey Dye are all non-craftable items — they come exclusively from quest rewards or vendor purchases.
The dye system in Crimson Desert rewards exploration and quest completion more than crafting when it comes to dark colors. If you want a true black, the Raiders in Muiquun questline is the confirmed path. Everything else — Deep Red's darkest shades, Deep Blue from Delesyia, Shadow Grey from your camp — will get you in the neighborhood, but the real thing requires that trip to Tashkalp.
