Dye merchants are the gatekeepers to armor and weapon style in Ghost of Yotei. Each vendor specializes in a color family and sits in a specific region, with a few tied to simple unlock steps. You’ll pay in flowers, and more options appear as you progress through the story and pick up new gear.

How dye merchants work (currency, inventory, availability)

  • Currency: Dyes and vanity items are purchased with flowers. Expect common items like hats and masks to be a handful of flowers, and premium dyes or kits to be higher. Crimson stock typically ranges from 3 to 15 flowers.
  • Progression: Merchant inventories expand as you advance the story and complete milestones. If something doesn’t appear yet, return later.
  • Prerequisite gear: A dye only appears once you’ve obtained the corresponding base armor or weapon kit in your inventory.

Crimson Dye Merchant (Stone Jaw Coast) — how to summon the boat and what it costs

The Crimson vendor doesn’t appear until you perform a simple call-in at Stone Jaw Coast on the west side of Ishikari Plain. The campsite is easy to spot: a fire pit beside a pool stained red.

  • Step 1: Reach Stone Jaw Coast and walk up to the campsite near the crimson-stained sand.
  • Step 2: Interact with the fire pit and build the campfire.
  • Step 3: Wait for the cutscene; the merchant’s boat will approach and dock.
  • Step 4: Speak to the merchant to open the shop.

Expect deep red dyes for armor, a few katana kits, a themed hat and mask selection, and basic resources. Pricing is straightforward: most items sit in the 3–15 flower range, with weapon kits and premium dyes at the top of that band. Check back later in the story for expanded stock.

Black Dye Merchant (Teshio Ridge) — route and unlock requirement

If you want the all-black look, head for Teshio Ridge. The camp lies below Sarobetsu Forest, west of the Teshio River, not far from Red Crane Inn.

  • Go to the Sarobetsu Forest landmark in Teshio Ridge.
  • Travel southwest toward the cliffs and watch for a small branching trail off the main path.
  • Follow that trail west until you reach the secluded camp marked with black banners. On the map, the structure may appear as “Black Dye House.”

You can browse some basics on first contact, but the full black dyeing services open up after progressing through the Kitsune chapter of the Yotei Six storyline. Bring flowers; black variants tend to be among the most in-demand cosmetics.

White, Green, and Blue dye vendors — quick notes

  • White (Yotei Grasslands): Easy early-game pickup near the Yotei River. Great for refreshing starter sets once you’ve unlocked their base pieces.
  • Green (Tokachi Range): South and east of the Ainu Camp at Hidaka Grove. A reliable stop while you clear Tokachi’s quests and camps.
  • Blue (Oshima Coast): On the coast toward the Otsuki River’s eastern label. Useful once the Saito Brothers arc and late-game trips pull you to Oshima.

All three operate without special summoning steps. Stock grows with your progression and gear ownership.

Why a dye isn’t showing up (and how to fix it)

  • Own the base armor or kit: If you haven’t obtained the underlying piece, its dye won’t appear in the shop menu.
  • Advance the story: Some dyes are chapter-gated or unlocked after a related quest is completed. If a specific option is missing, return after the next milestone.
  • Revisit specialty vendors: The Crimson boat and Black camp add new items over time; it’s worth checking back after major quests or chapter transitions.

What you can buy besides armor dyes

  • Weapon kits: Especially strong at the Crimson vendor.
  • Hats and masks: Color-matched headgear shows up alongside the dye palettes.
  • Resources: Basic ammo and crafting supplies are available at select merchants.

Plan your route by region and chapter, pick up the base armors you care about, and keep a stash of flowers. The moment you light the fire on Stone Jaw Coast or step into the cliffside Black Dye House, you’ll have everything you need to dress Atsu’s favorite sets in the palette you want.
