He Yuezhi boss strategy in Where Winds Meet

He Yuezhi is a spear-wielding mini boss in Sorrowfield Village, fought during the Jianghu Legacy quest “Twelve Years of Feuds” in Kaifeng. His own patterns are manageable, but the fight becomes messy fast because of the allied troops and his sweeping, high-damage strikes.

Where to find He Yuezhi

He Yuezhi appears in Sorrowfield Village in the Kaifeng region as part of Jianghu Legacy – 06: Twelve Years of Feuds.

To reach him, unlock and track the Twelve Years of Feuds exploration quest from the Kaifeng Exploration menu’s Side Story tab. Talking to the Wayfarer in the Granary of Plenty will let you inspect and track this legacy quest, which then leads you to Sorrowfield Village, where the boss encounter takes place.

He Yuezhi fights alongside multiple henchmen, so builds that hit several enemies at once are more valuable than single-target burst.

Prioritize AoE and damage-over-time. Strategic Sword with a Bleed/Poison setup is particularly effective here. Its sweeping attacks let you clip multiple enemies in a single chain, while stacking Bleed and Poison steadily depletes the health of brutes and swordsmen without requiring you to stay in danger for long combos.

Bring a healing umbrella if you have one. Activating a healing umbrella before you formally trigger the boss encounter gives you sustain while you are dealing with the opening mob pressure and reduces the need to stop for potions mid-fight.

Phase 1: remove He Yuezhi’s henchmen

The fight opens with He Yuezhi backed by three distinct allies: a brute, a swordsman, and an archer. Leaving them alive turns his wide spear attacks into unavoidable chip damage from multiple angles.

Step 1: Focus the brute first. The brute’s crowd-control can juggle you in the air, which locks you out of dodging He Yuezhi’s follow-up attacks. Commit your best AoE strings to keep the brute staggered and eliminate him quickly.

Step 2: Eliminate the archer second. With the brute gone, ranged pressure becomes the next biggest problem because it punishes you whenever you back off to heal or reset. Close the gap with movement skills and finish the archer before returning to the melee cluster.

Step 3: Clean up the swordsman last. Once the brute and archer are down, the swordsman is easier to manage. Stay patient, use your AoE weapon strings to clip both the swordsman and He Yuezhi when they align, and avoid overextending into He Yuezhi’s spear arcs.

Tip: You can thin the enemy group even before the boss health bar appears. Use your bow from outside the trigger area to pull individual henchmen away from He Yuezhi, then defeat them separately. This “pre-clear” removes much of the encounter’s initial chaos.

Alternative approach: use the high ground

The arena includes a raised platform that He Yuezhi struggles to follow.

Step 1: Climb to the high platform once you have some breathing room. From this position, He Yuezhi has difficulty reaching you with melee attacks.

Step 2: Use the height advantage to safely heal and apply ranged damage. Bows or other ranged tools can chip at his health bar while you recover. This also helps when your healing cooldowns are tight, and you need time without spear pressure.

Note: The high ground is a tool, not a permanent bunker. Use it to reset, heal, and pick off remaining adds, then drop back down to engage when your cooldowns and resources are ready.

He Yuezhi’s attack patterns and how to punish them

He Yuezhi’s spear style is built around slow but heavy swings, wide arcs, and impact shockwaves. Almost all of his threat comes from attacks that cover a lot of ground; over-committing to long combos is what usually gets you killed.

Red and yellow glint combo

He Yuezhi’s signature string is a sequence of yellow-glint spear strikes that ends in a red-glint finisher.

Step 1: When you see the first yellow glint, stop attacking and move purely into defense. The yellow strikes are unblockable, cover a wide area, and come in a short chain.

Step 2: Dodge the yellow-glint swings laterally. Rolling or sidestepping along the side of the spear, rather than straight back, keeps you in a better position to react to the final hit.

Step 3: Watch for the red glint at the end of the chain, then parry it. Perfectly timing the parry on the red-glint hit triggers a powerful counterattack that damages both He Yuezhi’s HP and his Qi bar, opening a window for safe follow-up attacks.

Tip: Treat this pattern as your primary damage opportunity. Do not chase him between these strings; instead, bait the combo, evade the yellow hits, then parry the red finisher to turn his strongest move into your biggest opening.

Other key moves and counters

Move Behavior Safe response
Grand Entrance Leaps from the stage and drives his spear down from the air. Time a dodge roll as he lands or parry the impact if you are confident.
Polar Stomp Stomps the ground and flows into a sweeping spear combo. Stay just outside the stomp radius, then roll through the sweeps or parry single hits.
Golden Spear Three yellow-glint attacks into a red-glint finisher. Dodge yellow hits, then perfect parry the red to trigger the counterattack.
Sweeping Charge Rushes straight toward you and finishes with a wide horizontal strike. Sidestep his line of charge and either parry the final sweep or punish his recovery from behind.

His swings can launch you into the air or knock you off your feet. Any time you are not fully familiar with the timing of a spear move, treat it as unsafe to block and favor dodge or repositioning instead.

General combat tips against He Yuezhi

Play around his slow recovery. His moves hit hard but leave clear downtime afterward. Take one or two hits in each opening rather than greedy combos, then back off before his next arc begins.

Stay at mid-range. Standing directly under his spear makes it harder to read glints, while staying too far away encourages more charging moves. A moderate distance gives you enough time to read yellow and red flashes and respond correctly.

Protect your Qi bar. Getting juggled by the brute or caught by multiple sweeps drains your Qi quickly, making it harder to parry the crucial red-glint strikes. That is why eliminating henchmen early and avoiding panic swings is so important.

Rewards and quest progression

Defeating He Yuezhi advances Jianghu Legacy – Twelve Years of Feuds and pays out a bundle of quest rewards, including the Toxic Arrow recipe, Medicinal Tales, Lv. 3 Ebon Iron, Echo Jade, Kaifeng Exploration points, Enlightenment Points, Character EXP, and Coins.

Clearing this encounter also removes one of the two main obstacles in the legacy chain and leads toward the confrontation with the Khitan leader Shen Yiren later in the story.
