Heart of a Father in Where Winds Meet: How to Start and Finish the Mercyheart Tale

Heart of a Father is a short Wandering Tale in Where Winds Meet set on the northern edge of Mercyheart Town. It focuses on Pan Faxin, a boy searching for a Buddha statue tied to his missing father, a sculptor from the Pan clan. The quest is easy to miss because it depends on the time of day and a very small, hidden item.

Heart of a Father quest basics

Heart of a Father is a Wandering Tale that plays out around the Buddha statues at the north entrance of Mercyheart Town (often called Mercyheart Village in-game text and community chatter). The story centers on:

  • Pan Faxin – a boy whose late father carved him a Buddha statue before vanishing in the Bodhi Sea.
  • Yang the Youngest – another boy who stands with Pan during the day.
  • The missing Buddha statue – a small keepsake Pan Faxin has lost and is quietly searching for at night.

Your role is to find the statue (or an alternate one) and return it to Pan Faxin, resolving the Wandering Tale and earning a small set of rewards in Qinghe.

How to start Heart of a Father (location and timing)

Step 1: Travel to Mercyheart Town and head to its north entrance. Look for a row or cluster of large stone Buddha statues just outside the gate.

Step 2: Approach the statues and locate the two boys standing nearby. These are Pan Faxin and Yang the Youngest. During normal daytime both will be present and chatting.

Step 3: If you only see NPCs unrelated to the Wandering Tale, or the boys are missing, adjust the in-game time. Set time to the Mao hour (early-morning / night slot used by several Mercyheart tales). At Mao hour, only Pan Faxin remains by the statues, and that is when his search is active.

Step 4: Speak to Pan Faxin. He explains that the Buddha statue his father carved for him has gone missing and that he has been looking for it near the statues each night. This dialogue flags Heart of a Father and opens the search for the statue.

Tip: If Pan Faxin still does not appear after changing to Mao hour, try nudging the clock through late evening and night and reloading the area. The Wandering Tale is tied to time, so cycling through night hours usually makes the kids spawn.

Finding the worn Buddha statue in Mercyheart Town

The easiest way to complete Heart of a Father is to recover the Worn Buddha Statue that is already lost somewhere around the main Buddha cluster.

Step 1: Stay near the large Buddha statues at the north entrance, where you met Pan Faxin.

Step 2: Walk around the back of the statue group and scan the ground directly behind one of the Buddhas. The Worn Buddha Statue is very small and easy to overlook, so move slowly and watch for an interaction prompt.

Step 3: Interact with the small statue to pick it up. This adds the Worn Buddha Statue to your inventory and advances the Heart of a Father clue.

Once you have the Worn Buddha Statue, you can technically resolve the Wandering Tale immediately by returning it to Pan Faxin, or you can seek out the New Buddha Statue tied to his father’s fate.

How to find the new Buddha statue near Floral Expanse Beyond

The second statue connects directly to Pan Faxin’s father and his disappearance in the Bodhi Sea. It is not required for completion, but it provides another option and a bit more context.

Step 1: Leave Mercyheart Town through the north gate.

Step 2: Once outside the walls, move north and then left (west) toward the Floral Expanse Beyond landmark, on the outskirts of the Bodhi Sea. This is the same general area described in Wandering Tales about the Bodhi Sea and the Pan clan sculptor.

Step 3: Near the Floral Expanse Beyond, look for a man and a boy standing beside a pile of rocks. This duo marks the correct spot on the shoreline.

Step 4: Inspect the rock pile next to them. The New Buddha Statue is hidden there. Interact with the pile to retrieve the statue.

In the tale’s background, Pan Faxin’s father is said to have carved this additional statue for his son before dying in the Bodhi Sea. That detail explains why a second Buddha bearing his work exists far from Mercyheart Town.

Which Buddha statue to give Pan Faxin

Heart of a Father lets you resolve the story using either of the two statues you have collected.

Step 1: Return to the north entrance of Mercyheart Town and find Pan Faxin again by the Buddha statues. Make sure it is still around Mao hour or nighttime if he has vanished.

Step 2: Talk to Pan Faxin. The dialogue gives you a choice to hand over one of the statues in your inventory. You can present either the Worn Buddha Statue or the New Buddha Statue.

Step 3: Confirm your choice to give him a statue. The Wandering Tale completes immediately after this exchange, regardless of which version you choose.

No branching outcome is known between the two options. The narrative implication is that both statues tie back to his father’s love—one as the original keepsake Pan Faxin lost, the other as a final carving his father made before disappearing at the Bodhi Sea.

Heart of a Father rewards

On completion, Heart of a Father grants a small set of progression and currency rewards tied to Qinghe:

Reward Amount
Echo Jade 30
Qinghe Exploration 10
Character EXP 2500
Coin 2500

The Echo Jade and Qinghe Exploration contribute directly to your regional progress, while the character experience and Coin provide a modest boost to leveling and basic expenses.

Story context and why this Wandering Tale matters

Heart of a Father is structurally simple, but it fills in small details around Mercyheart Town, the Bodhi Sea, and the Pan clan:

  • Pan Faxin’s father was once the finest sculptor of the Pan clan, using his craft to carve Buddha statues.
  • He vanished in the Bodhi Sea, and lore suggests he carved one last statue there for his son before dying.
  • The boy’s nightly search among the Buddha statues shows how he clings to that memory, looking for a physical link to a father who never returned.

By recovering and returning a Buddha statue, you are not just ticking off a side quest; you are closing a loop between father and son that the game has quietly staged in the background of Mercyheart Town’s Wandering Tales.

Once you have finished Heart of a Father, the northern edge of Mercyheart Town effectively “resets” to its normal rhythm, and you can move on to adjacent tales such as The Elixir Theft or Why Hasn't He Returned? elsewhere in Qinghe.
