Google recently announced Veo 2, its latest AI-powered video-generation model in response to OpenAI making its own video-generation AI tool Sora available to ChatGPT Plus users earlier this month.

What is Veo 2? Veo 2 is the successor to Google's video-generating AI tool, Veo, which the company showcased back in May of this year. The newer model can generate high-quality videos of up to 4K resolution and eight minutes long, which users can further extend up to a minute. Veo 2 also understands real-world Physics much better than the original Veo model and can portray human expressions and movements more realistically.

The tool can help not just hobbyists but business owners, creators, and marketers create professional-quality videos easily. It is claimed to outperform other competing options like Minimax, Kling, and OpenAI's Sora, delivering much better results. Plus, Veo 2 adheres to the user prompts more closely, resulting in more accurate outputs though it can sometimes find very complex scenes challenging.

Aside from these advances, Google is doubling down on safety when using AI tools like Veo 2. All videos you generate using it will have an invisible SynthID watermark, which cannot be removed even by editing the video. This ensures that anyone can identify such videos as AI-generated, preventing confusion, misinformation, and misuse. Users can access Veo 2 in Google's AI tools like VideoFX, ImageFX, and Whisk.

Currently, Google is only providing early access to Veo 2 using Google's VideoFX video platform to users in the US who are aged 18 and above. The tool is currently in beta testing, but if you're interested in trying it out, you will need to join the waitlist.

  1. To access Veo 2, head to the Google Labs page and sign in to your Google account.
  2. Click on the 'Join the waitlist' button for VideoFX to sign up and get access to the tool.
  1. This will open up a new page containing a form that you need to fill. You will have to enter your details like name, email address, country of residence, age, etc. Also, you will need to provide a link showing how VideoFX is relevant to your work. Keep in mind that right now, access is only available to US residents.
  1. Once you've joined the waitlist, you just have to wait for an email that will inform you when you get access to the tool. Once you get access, you can simply type in your prompts in Veo 2 and it will generate your videos.
Note: If you cannot access the Google Labs page directly, try using a VPN. However, you may still not be able to get access to Veo 2 since approval depends strictly on the form you'll need to fill. In that case, you will just have to wait for Google to make Veo 2 publicly available to more users and in other regions.

Things to know

  • Veo 2 can understand terms and language related to cinematography, which means you can add cinematic effects, types of lenses, specific genres, etc. to your prompt, so you can create your video just the way you want.
  • According to Google, the videos that Veo 2 generates are more reliable since the tool is less likely to hallucinate or add extra elements that should not be present, compared to other video-generating AI tools.
  • Google has plans to bring Veo 2 to other platforms like YouTube in 2025, though it hasn't specified any exact timeframe.
