How to Defeat Marni's Excavatron in Crimson Desert — And What You Get for It

Marni's Excavatron is a hulking, drill-armed mining machine lurking in the Bleed Bandit-occupied Karin Quarry, and it may well be the first real boss encounter you stumble into in Crimson Desert. You'll face it during the Stolen Quarry quest for House Roberts, which becomes available in Chapter 2. Without the right approach, the Excavatron's rapid drill attacks will stun-lock and kill you in just a couple of hits. With the right skills equipped, though, this fight becomes very manageable.

Quick answer: Unlock Level 3 Force Palm (the Expertise node) and land all three consecutive strikes on the Excavatron — the third hit stuns it, giving you a safe damage window. Alternatively, use Blinding Flash on the boss right as it begins its underground dig attack to short-circuit and stun it.

Preparation Before the Fight

The single most important thing you can do before entering Karin Quarry is invest skill points into Force Palm until you reach Level 3 and unlock the Expertise node. This upgrade lets you chain three Force Palms in a row, and the third strike produces a distinct "thonk" sound effect that confirms the Excavatron has been stunned. If you don't have enough skill points yet, consider completing a few side activities or progressing the main story slightly before tackling the Stolen Quarry quest.

You'll also want the Focus ability, which lets you recharge your spirit on demand by pressing X on keyboard or R3 on controller. If you haven't unlocked Focus yet, complete the Unexpected Gift quest early in Chapter 2 — it's short and straightforward. Having Focus available means you can reliably regenerate spirit between Force Palm combos instead of waiting passively.

Equipping sword and shield is strongly recommended for this encounter. The shield lets you block the Excavatron's drill attacks, which is critical for surviving the moments between your stun windows. Upgrading your armor at an anvil beforehand also helps absorb the heavy hits you'll inevitably take while learning the boss's patterns.

Primary Strategy — Level 3 Force Palm Stun Loop

Step 1: Keep your distance and wait for a safe opening. The Excavatron telegraphs most of its attacks by walking forward with its drill arms extended. Block with your shield if it closes in on you.

Step 2: When you have an opening, execute three consecutive Force Palms. On the third strike, you'll hear a loud impact sound, and the Excavatron will stagger into a stunned state. This is your damage window — land a full melee combo while the boss is immobilized.

Step 3: Immediately back off after your combo ends. Create distance and activate Focus (X / R3) to restore your spirit so you can repeat the three-hit Force Palm chain. Rinse and repeat this loop until the boss goes down.

⚠️
Some players report the three-hit Force Palm stun can feel inconsistent in its timing. If you're having trouble landing it reliably, the Blinding Flash method described below is a strong alternative.

Alternative Strategy — Blinding Flash Interrupt

The Excavatron has a dangerous underground attack where it burrows beneath the arena and chases you, stabbing upward repeatedly before resurfacing. You can actually prevent this attack entirely by using Blinding Flash at the right moment. When the Excavatron begins its digging animation, activate Blinding Flash by pressing L1 + R1 simultaneously (LB + RB on Xbox-style controllers), then shine the sword's light on the boss. The machine gets electrocuted, the dig is interrupted, and you get a free damage window.

The timing is important — you need to trigger Blinding Flash while the Excavatron is in its pre-dig animation, not after it has already gone underground. On a controller, both bumpers must be pressed at the same time for it to register correctly during combat. You do not need to sheathe your weapons first; the ability works with your weapon drawn as long as both inputs are simultaneous.

Another option that works against the underground phase is jumping and using Force Palm downward while the boss is beneath you. This can force the Excavatron to surface early in a stunned state, giving you another opening to deal damage.

Dealing with the Underground Attack

If you don't manage to interrupt the dig with Blinding Flash or Force Palm, you'll need to survive the underground phase manually. Sprint to avoid the upward stabs as the Excavatron tracks you beneath the ground. The key detail is the final stab — the boss resurfaces on the last one, and simply sprinting won't always clear you. Dodge-roll just before the last stab to avoid taking damage from both the stab and the resurfacing animation.

Managing the Bleed Bandit Adds

Several Bleed Bandit enemies share the arena with the Excavatron. They're weaker than the boss but can harass you at the worst possible moments. The optimal approach is to kill two of them and leave one alive. The game spawns additional bandits when all of them are eliminated, so keeping a single one standing prevents reinforcements from appearing while posing minimal threat on its own.

Additional Approaches Worth Knowing

MethodHow It WorksNotes
Bare-handed heavy attacksEquip strong gloves and boots, level up fist combat, and use hit-and-run heavy strikes plus the special attackEach hit can deal roughly 10–15% of the boss's HP with decent gear
Damiane's ranged attackStay at range and repeatedly use R2 to chip the boss down safelySlower but very low risk
Fire pit obstacle cheesePosition the stone fire pit in the arena between you and the boss; the Excavatron rams into it when trying to dig undergroundWorks well with a two-handed weapon that can reach over the obstacle
Barred room kitingLure the Excavatron near a room with bars in the quarry and attack through the barrierSafe fallback if other methods aren't working

Excavatron Rewards

Defeating Marni's Excavatron grants two rewards. The first is the Mining Knuckledrill, a unique piece of equipment. The second is a gold vein map, which points you toward a valuable mining location. Both drop automatically upon the boss's death, so there's nothing extra you need to do to collect them.

The Excavatron hits hard and punishes hesitation, but once you understand the Force Palm stun loop or the Blinding Flash interrupt, the fight becomes a repeatable pattern rather than a frantic scramble. Stock up on healing food before heading in, keep your shield ready between damage windows, and don't be afraid to retreat and recharge spirit with Focus. The Stolen Quarry quest is an early skill check, and the tools to pass it are all available well before you reach Karin Quarry.
