How to Evolve Tyrunt into Tyrantrum (Level, Time of Day, and Game Differences)

Tyrunt looks like it should grow into something terrifying on its own, but its evolution has a specific catch: time of day. If that condition isn’t met, you can grind levels forever and nothing will happen.

Tyrunt evolution basics

Game Evolution Level Time Requirement Evolves Into
Pokémon X / Y 39+ Daytime only Tyrantrum
Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire 39+ Daytime only Tyrantrum
Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon 39+ Daytime only Tyrantrum
Sword / Shield 39+ Daytime only Tyrantrum
Pokémon GO Costs 50 Tyrunt Candy Must be in day mode Tyrantrum
Pokémon Legends: Z-A 39+ Daytime only Tyrantrum

The level threshold is straightforward: Tyrunt needs to hit at least level 39. The twist is that the evolution only triggers during the day in mainline games that feature Tyrunt, in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and in Pokémon GO’s own version of daytime.

How Tyrunt evolves in the mainline games

Pokémon X and Y

In Kalos, Tyrunt comes from reviving the Jaw Fossil at the Ambrette Town Fossil Lab. From there, the evolution rule is simple:

  • Level Tyrunt to 39 or higher.
  • Gain a level during the in-game day to trigger evolution into Tyrantrum.

Daytime in X/Y follows the Nintendo 3DS system clock. If Tyrunt hits level 57 at night, for example, it will not evolve; you need one more level gained while the clock reads daytime hours.

Note: Held items like Eviolite do not block Tyrunt’s evolution. If it is not evolving, the problem is almost always the time of day or the fact it hasn’t leveled up again since meeting the condition.

Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, and later mainline entries

In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Tyrunt is obtained by reviving a Jaw Fossil, but the evolution trigger remains the same as in Kalos:

  • Reach at least level 39.
  • Level up during the day.

The same daytime evolution rule carries forward to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and to Sword and Shield, which both feature Tyrunt. In Sword and Shield, Tyrunt can be found in the Crown Tundra area (for example, around Ballimere Lake), and once caught, it also evolves into Tyrantrum starting at level 39 in daytime.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A

In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Tyrunt keeps the same evolution logic, but both how you get it and how you trigger evolution look a little different.

How to get Tyrunt in Legends: Z-A

Step Action
1 Complete Side Mission 27 “Restored from a Fossil!” to unlock fossil revival at the Pokémon Research Lab in the Vert District.
2 Buy a Jaw Fossil from the Stone Emporium.
3 Revive the Jaw Fossil at the Pokémon Research Lab to receive Tyrunt.

How evolution works in Legends: Z-A

The game follows the modern evolution flow introduced in Legends: Arceus: Pokémon do not auto-evolve when they meet their conditions. Instead, you choose when to evolve them from your party menu.

  • Train Tyrunt until it reaches at least level 39.
  • Make sure the current time in Lumiose City is daytime.
  • When Tyrunt has met both requirements, an up-arrow marker appears on its icon in the party or pastures.
  • Select Tyrunt and choose the evolve option to turn it into Tyrantrum.

If you’re stuck at night, you can sit on a bench in the city to shift time to day and then trigger the evolution.

How Tyrunt evolves in Pokémon GO

Pokémon GO doesn’t use levels, but the design for Tyrunt stays thematically consistent: it still wants daylight.

  • Collect 50 Tyrunt Candy.
  • Make sure the game is currently in day mode (the overworld is bright and shows the sun icon).
  • Use the evolve button on Tyrunt’s info screen while it is daytime to obtain Tyrantrum.

If the sky is set to night, the evolve button will not meet the time-based requirement, even if you have enough candy.

Why your Tyrunt isn’t evolving

When Tyrunt refuses to evolve, it usually comes down to one of three issues.

Symptom Likely Cause Fix
Tyrunt is above level 39, but no evolution prompt appears (X/Y, OR/AS, US/UM, Sword/Shield) Level gained at night Gain at least one more level during in-game daytime.
Tyrunt icon shows an up-arrow in Legends: Z-A but nothing happens automatically Manual evolution system Open the party menu, select Tyrunt, and choose “Evolve” during the day.
Enough candy in Pokémon GO but evolve button won’t meet conditions Not currently in day mode Wait until the game switches to daytime visuals, then evolve.

Time-of-day evolution can feel opaque because the level condition persists across the clock, but the actual transformation only checks when Tyrunt gains a new level (or, in Legends: Z-A, when you confirm the evolution) while it’s daytime. Once you know that, the fix is usually as simple as one more battle at the right time.

Quick reference: Tyrunt’s role and stats

The evolution requirements are the main hurdle, but it helps to know what you’re building toward.

Pokémon Type Category Base HP Base Attack Base Defense Base Sp. Atk Base Sp. Def Base Speed
Tyrunt Rock / Dragon Royal Heir Pokémon 58 89 77 45 45 48

Tyrunt has solid physical attack and defense for a first-stage Fossil Pokémon, with lower special stats and speed. Evolving on time into Tyrantrum is key if you want that offensive profile to keep pace with the rest of your team.

In every modern appearance, Tyrunt’s evolution story is the same: a Jaw Fossil baby with a strong jaw and a bad temperament that only agrees to grow up once it has seen enough battles and the sun is out. Hit level 39, wait for daytime, and it will finally live up to its “Royal Heir” title.
