“An Unnatural Omen” is Jianghu Legacy 08 in Where Winds Meet, and it’s built around two things the game expects you to understand quickly: how the North Star Bagua Platform drives environmental puzzles, and how the Xuanyuan Cult’s barrier mechanics interrupt fights. The quest moves from a surface encounter in Roaring Sands into a layered underground chamber, then fans out into three Enclosures with rotating-panel Hexagram puzzles before ending in a boss encounter against Jin Zhongyuan’s inner demon.
How to unlock “An Unnatural Omen”
Step 1: Go to Roaring Sands and talk to the Wayfarer there to unlock Jianghu Legacy 08.
Step 2: Open the Exploration menu, find the quest in the Side Story tab, then inspect it to reveal the location and start tracking.
Rescue the Crying Man at Ethereal Mountain (Roaring Sands)
Step 1: Head to Ethereal Mountain in Roaring Sands and move toward Skyreach Terrace, using the stairs ahead of the Skyreach Terrace Boundary Stone.
Step 2: Defeat the Xuanyuan Cult Members at the terrace. Expect ranged pressure and invisibility; invisibility prevents lock-on, but the enemies can still be hit.
Step 3: After the fight, speak with Suan Sanchun (the crying man). He points you toward the “Azure Dragon” clue.
Rotate the Azure Dragon statue and activate the elevator
Step 1: Interact with the North Star Bagua Platform near the steps you used to reach the terrace.
Step 2: Rotate the Azure Dragon statue until it faces east, using the beacon as your orientation marker.
Step 3: Step onto the yin-yang slab beneath the statue to trigger the elevator down.
Open the Bagua Wheel door (Tattered Eight Trigrams puzzle)
Step 1: In the underground chamber, approach the sitting corpse up the steps to obtain the Tattered Eight Trigrams clue. (There’s also a chest on the left side of the room.)
Step 2: Turn around to face the large door and interact with the Bagua Wheel Platform.
Step 3: Rotate the two rings on the dial until the symbols align with the Tattered Eight Trigrams clue to unlock the door.
Step 4: Enter and activate the Hero’s Tomb inside.
Descend deeper and secure the Ethereal Chamber area
Step 1: Use the lever inside the elevator to descend. The elevator stops mid-way for a fight against three Xuanyuan Cult Members.
Step 2: After the mid-way fight, open the chest, then pull the lever again to continue downward.
Step 3: At the bottom, activate the next Hero’s Tomb before moving forward through the doors.
Step 4: Defeat the Xuanyuan Moon Minister waiting near the doors, then activate the Ethereal Chamber Boundary Stone.
Survive the three-wave arena fight and the Xuanyuan Luminarch
The next major room is a staged combat sequence. You’re locked into multiple waves, and the Xuanyuan Cult leans heavily on barriers that can waste time and resources if you don’t address them directly.
Step 1: Defeat three waves of Xuanyuan Cult Members until the Xuanyuan Luminarch appears at the end.
Step 2: When an astral barrier appears, look up for the hovering Moon Disk and shoot it with fire arrows to dispel the barrier.
Step 3: During the Xuanyuan Luminarch fight, shoot his Moon Disk to exhaust his Qi bar and open a window for an Execute.
Step 4: After the fight, speak with Jin Zhongyuan at the central pavilion.
Retrieve the three North Star Orbs (Hexagram Enclosures)
Jin Zhongyuan sends you to three Enclosures. Access is controlled through the North Star Bagua Platform behind him, and each Enclosure is gated by a Hexagram setup involving ceiling panels (the “four beasts”) and, in some cases, platform symbols on the ground.

Heavenly Market Hexagram (White Tiger Enclosure)
Step 1: Use the North Star Bagua Platform to rotate the ceiling panels until the White Tiger aligns with the Enclosure doors. The upper symbol on the door glows when correct.
Step 2: Enter the Enclosure once it opens, then solve the constellation puzzle on the floor by rotating the three rings until the constellations connect.
Step 3: In the memory segment, choose between “Regret” or “Do not Regret.” The choice changes the dialogue but not the quest outcome.
Step 4: Receive the North Star Orb: Heavenly Market, open the chest inside the Enclosure, then return to Jin Zhongyuan and hand over the orb.
Grand Tenuity Hexagram (Black Tortoise Enclosure)
Step 1: The Black Tortoise ceiling panel is already set, so switch focus to the ground platforms and rotate them until you find the pattern with five blue streaks, where the middle streak is flanked by two short streaks at the top and bottom.
Step 2: Enter and complete the constellation puzzle by rotating rings until the constellations connect.
Step 3: During the memory segment, choose “Villain” or “Good.” The choice only changes dialogue.
Step 4: Receive the North Star Orb: Supreme Palace. Open the nearby chest, watch for an ambush by a Xuanyuan Moon Minister, then return to Jin Zhongyuan and hand over the orb.
Purple Tenuity Hexagram (Vermilion Bird Enclosure)
Step 1: Rotate the ceiling panels until the Vermilion Bird is aligned, then switch to the ground platforms and locate the symbol that resembles an equal sign (=) with two short streaks above it.
Step 2: Solve the constellation puzzle inside. Rotating one ring can affect others, so start with the outermost ring because it isn’t affected by inner ring rotations.
Step 3: In the memory segment, choose “Kill” or “Spare.” The quest outcome does not change.
Step 4: Receive the North Star Orb: Purple Star, open the chest in the Enclosure, then return to Jin Zhongyuan.
Defeat Jin Zhongyuan’s Inner Demon
Step 1: On the third return, Jin Zhongyuan becomes possessed by his inner demon. Engage the fight immediately, treating it like a fast weapon matchup rather than a slow boss test.
Step 2: Watch for quick whip attacks and use parries to keep the fight under control.
Leave the chamber and collect your rewards
Step 1: After the fight, talk to Jin Zhongyuan again to finalize the quest and receive the rewards.
Step 2: Follow the quest marker through the passage leading back to the surface. The chamber’s traversal is stricter than usual; gaps are more punishing because you can’t double jump here.
Post-quest follow-up: the pendant for Elder Sun
Jin Zhongyuan points you toward a final handoff in Kaifeng City: delivering a pendant to Elder Sun.

Most of the friction in “An Unnatural Omen” comes from two pressure points: the Bagua Wheel door’s symbol alignment and the Enclosures’ rotating systems that ask you to think in layers. Once you treat the North Star Bagua Platform as the core tool — and prioritize Moon Disks when barriers go up — the quest becomes a clean sequence of puzzles and fights rather than a maze.
