How to get Goomy in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Goomy is one of the earliest Dragon-types you can grab in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but it is picky about when and where it appears. Weather, sector, and even story progress all matter.

The game essentially gives Goomy two lives: rare, weather-locked encounters around Lumiose City’s canals and rooftops, and a much more reliable spawn hidden in the Lumiose Sewers. On top of that, specific rainy spots can roll Alpha Goomy, while the sewer spawn is ideal for repeated rolls, including Shiny hunting.

Goomy locations in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Goomy has a small, focused habitat list. The table below summarizes every consistent location and what you can get there.

Location Conditions What spawns Notes
Vert Sector 9 bridge (Lumiose City) Raining Standard Goomy, rare Early high-level encounter; can also appear on nearby roof.
Saison Canal (Magenta & Jaune sectors) Raining Standard Goomy, chance of Alpha Spawns under bridges, near grates, and by the canal edges.
Blue Pokémon Center fountain courtyard (Vert sector area) Raining Standard Goomy, chance of Alpha Small pond near a fountain reached through an arch by the Center.
Wild Zone 8 city-hall backlot (Vert / sector 13-side nook) Raining Standard Goomy, chance of Alpha Grassy nook below a ledge behind Lumiose City Hall.
Justice Dojo / rooftop “Florges fountain” courtyard Raining Standard Goomy, chance of Alpha Rooftop courtyard accessed by ladders and gliding between roofs.
Saison Canal decks near sewer entrance Raining Chance of Alpha Goomy Reports of Alpha Goomy on canal-side decks close to the sewer doors.
Vert sectors 4, 6 park/rooftops near canal Raining (sometimes night) Standard Goomy, chance of Alpha Spawns in central park and on nearby roofs when it rains.
Lumiose Sewers (main corridor room) Always, after access Standard Goomy (guaranteed), Patrat, Inkay Core repeatable spawn; used for normal, Alpha, and Shiny hunts.

How to make it rain for Goomy spawns

Most overworld Goomy encounters only appear in the rain. The game uses a city-wide weather cycle that you can nudge but not fully control.

Step What to do Why it matters
1. Find a bench in Lumiose City Interact with any bench that lets you “rest until day/night”. Resting advances the in-game clock and rolls a new weather pattern.
2. Alternate between day and night Rest to swap day → night, then again night → day. A full day cycle (two rests) refreshes the weather.
3. Check for rain each cycle Look for raindrops in the sky or the rain-cloud icon on the HUD/menu. You only have a few minutes of real time before the rain ends.
4. Repeat until it rains Keep cycling day/night at the bench until rain appears. Rain is relatively uncommon, so expect several cycles.

Once the rain starts, go straight to your preferred Goomy spot; the window is short, roughly in the 5–7 minute range.

Early-game rainy Goomy spots around Lumiose

If you want Goomy before the sewers open up, the rain-limited city spawns are your first stop.

Vert Sector 9 bridge and rooftop

Vert Sector 9 (the green sector) offers one of the first high-level Goomy encounters:

  • Wait for rain using a nearby bench.
  • Head to Vert Sector 9 and check the main bridge for a Goomy spawn.
  • If nothing appears on the bridge, look at the roof just above this area; Goomy can spawn up there as well during rain.

This encounter is relatively strong for its timing in the story, so bring solid Poké Balls and a way to weaken it safely.

Saison Canal and canal-side Alpha Goomy

The Saison Canal running through the Magenta and Jaune sectors is another consistent rain-dependent home for Goomy, including Alpha variants.

  • Trigger rain, then run the length of the Saison Canal on both sides.
  • Check under bridges, near sewer grates, and along the narrow walkways by the water.
  • Pay extra attention to canal-side decks near the sewer entrance; Alpha Goomy can appear here when it’s raining.

These canal encounters are not guaranteed Alpha spawns, but when an Alpha does appear here, it is typically high level and a strong base for evolving into Alpha Goodra later.

Blue Pokémon Center fountain and Wild Zone 8 backlot Goomy

Several tucked-away courtyards and nooks are built around Goomy’s love of damp, rainy spaces.

Blue Pokémon Center fountain courtyard

Near a prominent blue-roofed Pokémon Center in Lumiose:

  • Wait for rain, then fast travel or run to the blue Pokémon Center.
  • From the entrance, head through the small archway on the right.
  • Enter the fountain courtyard and follow it to the tiny pond at the back.

During rain, a Goomy sits by this pond and can roll as an Alpha. The fountain area also ties into a small side mission, but the Goomy spawn itself is independent of that task.

Wild Zone 8 / Lumiose City Hall nook

Another nearby spawn hides behind Lumiose City Hall on the Wild Zone 8 side:

  • Fly to Wild Zone 8 and mark the sector behind Lumiose City Hall (sector 13 side).
  • Run up the large staircase and walk past City Hall, following the pavement around the back.
  • Look for a grassy zone near a holo sign and peer over the ledge into the corner nook formed by surrounding buildings.

When it’s raining, a Goomy can appear tucked into this back corner. Because this area is tight and quiet, it’s a good place to sneak up and throw a strong ball from behind.

Justice Dojo rooftop courtyard Goomy

High above one of Lumiose’s training hubs sits a rooftop courtyard that doubles as a small Goomy refuge in the rain.

  • Reach the Justice Dojo and find the ladder that leads to the roof.
  • Climb up, then use the Rotolide movement ability to cross an overturned beam connecting two rooftops.
  • Pass an Alpha Flabébé on the way if you want to catch it; otherwise, keep moving.
  • Glide down to the next roof and climb the last ladder into the courtyard (often described as a Florges or “Flame Bay” courtyard).

When rain is active, a Goomy can spawn in this rooftop garden. The space is large enough that you can loop around and reload spawns a few times before the rain ends, giving multiple chances at an Alpha or a better nature.

Guaranteed Goomy in the Lumiose Sewers

Once the story reaches the sewers, Goomy becomes dramatically easier to obtain. The Lumiose Sewers house a semi-isolated spawn that doesn’t depend on rain at all.

Requirement Details
Main story progress You enter the Lumiose Sewers as part of the main quest and can revisit them afterward.
Side Mission 57: The Camerupt Entrepreneur This side mission opens a specific sewer entrance that leads to a small chamber with Goomy and Inkay.

How to reach the core sewer Goomy spawn

  • Use the sewer entrance close to Wild Zone 16 (or the mission entrance unlocked by The Camerupt Entrepreneur).
  • From the entrance, run straight down the long corridor until you hit a wall.
  • Turn right into the side path at the end.
  • Follow this path to a small gap with a block of ice in the middle.
  • Hit the ice with any Fire-type move to melt it and create an ice bridge.
  • Cross to the far side: a single Goomy typically spawns in this back room, alongside Patrat and Inkay in some setups.

This is the only standard, always-available Goomy spawn in the game and is the easiest way to fill the Pokédex entry with minimal setup.

How to hunt Alpha Goomy

Alpha Goomy appears in several places, but some setups lend themselves to fast, repeatable checks.

Alpha location Conditions Method Approx. level
Saison Canal decks and under bridges Raining Run along canal edges during rain, fast travel to reset spawns. Varies; usually mid-to-high level.
Blue Pokémon Center fountain pond Raining Rest at a nearby bench until it rains, then check the pond repeatedly within the same shower. Mid-level.
Justice Dojo rooftop courtyard Raining Use the rooftop route, then loop around the courtyard to reload Goomy while rain lasts. Mid-level.
Sewer chamber linked to Side Mission 57 Always available once unlocked Use the sewer entrance, defeat or catch the Inkays and Goomy, then warp back to the entrance and repeat. Around level 48.

Players report two main patterns in the Side Mission 57 sewer chamber:

  • Some runs produce Alpha Inkay frequently but no Alpha Goomy until the regular Goomy is defeated at least once.
  • Others see Alpha Goomy without ever needing to KO it, simply by flying or warping back and forth inside the sewer area.

Either way, the repeatable sewer chamber is one of the most consistent ways to keep rolling for an Alpha Goomy without dealing with weather timers.

How to evolve Goomy into Sliggoo and Goodra

Goomy’s evolution line keeps its traditional weather twist even in Legends: Z-A.

Stage Requirement Result
Goomy → Sliggoo Level 40 Goomy evolves automatically when it reaches level 40.
Sliggoo → Goodra Level 50 and it must be raining outside Once both conditions are met, Sliggoo becomes eligible to evolve into Goodra.
Hisuian Sliggoo / Goodra Transfer Hisuian forms are present but, for now, only via Pokémon Home transfers.

Practical evolution flow

  • Level Goomy to 40 to obtain Sliggoo.
  • Continue training Sliggoo until it reaches level 50.
  • Use a bench to cycle day and night until rain starts anywhere in Lumiose City.
  • While it is still raining, open your party menu and trigger Sliggoo’s evolution to Goodra.

The same rain-rule applies when evolving Hisuian Sliggoo into Hisuian Goodra, once that variant is in your save via Pokémon Home.

How to Shiny hunt Goomy efficiently

Shiny Goomy uses the same spawn rules as regular Goomy. The most efficient approach is to use the Lumiose Sewers so you are not at the mercy of rain RNG.

Shiny hunting loop in the sewers

  • Enter the Lumiose Sewers and run down the main corridor to the right-hand room with Goomy’s spawn (just past the ice bridge).
  • Stop briefly inside the room so the Goomy, Patrat, and Inkay spawns fully load.
  • Turn around and run all the way back up the corridor, moving far enough away that the game despawns Pokémon in that room.
  • Run back down the corridor to reload the room’s spawns.
  • Repeat this back-and-forth motion until a Shiny appears.

Pokémon in Legends: Z-A typically despawn when you are roughly 50 meters away. Dropping a map marker on the Goomy room helps you gauge when you’ve moved far enough to force a new set of spawns. Expect to see Shiny Patrat or Shiny Inkay during this process as well, since they share the room.

With one reliable sewer spawn and a web of rainy rooftop and canal encounters, Goomy ends up being less about raw rarity and more about patience with weather and reset loops. Once caught, pushing it through Sliggoo to a rain-evolved Goodra—or its Hisuian counterpart—gives you one of the more flexible Dragon-types in the Kalos-focused Pokédex.
