How to Get Tree Sap in Hytale and What It's Used For

Tree Sap is a plant-based crafting ingredient in Hytale that drops when you destroy trees. It appears in 27 different recipes and serves as a key material for lighting items and several decorative or utility objects. The item is categorized under Plants and has the in-game identifier Ingredient_Tree_Sap.

Quick answer: Cut down any tree or break the small nubs on tree trunks to collect Tree Sap. It drops automatically and enters your inventory after a short delay.

How to Obtain Tree Sap

Tree Sap drops from every tree in Hytale. You can harvest it by cutting down entire trees or by targeting the small protruding nubs on tree trunks. When you destroy a lower section of a tree, all connected blocks above it collapse automatically due to Hytale's structural destruction system. This mechanic makes tree harvesting faster than breaking blocks one at a time.

Using an axe is the most efficient method, but you can also punch tree blocks or use other weapons if you don't have an axe available. The collection process is slower without tools, but it ensures you're never completely unable to gather Tree Sap when needed.

After destroying a tree, wait one to two seconds before moving away. Tree Sap, along with Plant Fiber and Sticks, sometimes has a brief delay before it appears in your inventory. If you leave the area too quickly, you may miss the drop.

Best Locations to Farm Tree Sap

The forest area near your starting zone is the most reliable place to farm Tree Sap. These wooden forest regions have a high density of trees and are designed to support early-game progression. Since every tree drops Tree Sap, the concentration of trunks in these areas makes them the most efficient farming location.

Staying close to the spawn area also reduces travel time. You can collect Tree Sap while gathering wood for early crafting stations, making the process efficient without requiring specialized tools or gear.

Setting Up a Tree Farm

You can create a renewable Tree Sap source by planting saplings. To do this, you need a Farmer's Workbench, Essence of Life, and Tree Saplings. Essence of Life is obtained by breaking grass, plants, or small creatures. Saplings are crafted at the Farmer's Workbench and can be planted on dirt or grass blocks.

Trees grow naturally without water or light, making manual tree farming low-maintenance. Once planted, saplings mature into full trees that you can harvest repeatedly for Tree Sap, logs, and other materials.

What Tree Sap Is Used For

Tree Sap is primarily a crafting material for lighting items. It is required to craft torches, which serve as the main light source for exploration and mining. Torches can be held in your hand or placed on surfaces to illuminate caves and structures. Tree Sap is also used to craft candles for decorative lighting and lanterns that provide stronger, more reliable illumination.

Beyond lighting, Tree Sap appears in recipes for cauldrons, which are used in potion-related crafting. It is also an ingredient in several potion components, plates, and decorative items. Seasonal and themed items such as Cane Ornaments also require Tree Sap.

Because Tree Sap is used across multiple crafting paths, it's best to store any amount you collect instead of discarding it. The material often becomes necessary later in progression, even if you don't need it immediately.

Tree Sap as Furnace Fuel

Tree Sap can also be used as fuel for furnaces and campfires. While not its primary use, this makes it a versatile resource when you need to smelt items or cook food and don't have other fuel sources readily available.

Item Properties

Tree Sap is classified as a raw material and is categorized under Plants. It can be farmed and drops on death, meaning you will lose any Tree Sap in your inventory if you die unless you retrieve it from your dropped items. It is not obtained as an enemy drop.

Having a steady supply of Tree Sap is important for navigating caves safely, keeping bases well lit, and maintaining efficiency while mining. Since it is used across multiple crafting paths, storing any amount collected is recommended rather than discarding it.
