With Bluesky becoming immensely popular in just a matter of weeks, you may be considering moving to the platform and leaving X behind. While creating an account on the platform is easy, the important question is whether you will be able to migrate your followers to Bluesky with you.

What is Bluesky and how to use it
Eager to fly away from X and looking for a place to settle? Bluesky is a great alternative!

Fortunately, you can not only migrate to Bluesky from X and take your followers with you but can also migrate your 'Following' and block lists using the Sky Follower Bridge extension.

Keep in mind that this extension collects data from X using screen scraping, something that X tries to prevent. So, you need to work quickly if you want to migrate to Bluesky along with your followers before X can take any action against the extension.

Install and setup the Sky Follower Bridge extension

  1. The Sky Follower Bridge extension is available for Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox browsers. Depending on your browser, you can download it from the Chrome Web Store, Edge Add-ons Store, or Firefox Add-ons Store.
  1. Once you install the extension, it should show up in your toolbar but if it does not, click on the 'Extensions' icon and then on the pin icon next to the extension.
  1. Once the extension is installed, you will need to create a password that is specific to that app for your Bluesky profile. Sign in to your Bluesky account using a web browser and click on 'Settings' on the left.
  1. Then scroll down to the 'Advanced' section and click on 'App passwords'.
  1. Next, click on the 'Add app password' button.
  1. Provide a unique name for the App password and then click on the 'Create App password' button.
  1. You will see your App password on your screen. Note it down and keep it safe since you won't be able to view it again. Then click on the 'Done' button.

Using the Sky Follower Bridge extension

Once the Sky Follower Bridge extension is installed and you've set up your Bluesky App password, you can migrate your followers from X to Bluesky. The URLs for your followers and people who follow you are connected to your X profile. For instance, if your username is RandomUser01, the URLs will be as follows:

  • Followers: https://x.com/randomuser01/followers
  • Verified followers: https://x.com/randomuser01/verified_followers
  • Following: https://x.com/randomuser01/following
  • Block list: https://x.com/settings/blocked/all
  1. Log in to your X account and go to your followers/following page (the list you want to migrate) by navigating manually or using the URL; you can replace the 'randomuser01' in the above links with your X username to do so.
  1. Then, open the Sky Follower Bridge extension by clicking on it in the toolbar or using the Alt + B shortcut.
  1. When the extension appears, type in your Bluesky email and the App password you created earlier. Then click on the 'Find Bluesky Users' button.
  1. Wait for the extension to find your contacts. Once it does, click on the 'View Detected users' button.
  1. Then click on the 'Follow' button for the users you want to follow on Bluesky. You can also click on the 'Follow all' button if you want to follow all the users the extension detects. You can also block the users you've blocked on X in the same way.

Things to know

  • While you're following or blocking people on Bluesky, the extension's discovery pages will keep running in the background looking for more contacts. If you have a large number of followers, allow the extension to keep running as it can take some time to find everything.
  • Avoid running the extension multiple times simultaneously to look for contacts. However, you may have to run it again over the coming weeks as Bluesky gains more users.
  • If you misplace your Bluesky App password, there is no way to recover it. You will have to set up a new App password.
  • The Sky Follower Bridge extension has a few issues, so at times you may experience problems when using it. For instance, if you exceed the Bluesky API rate limits, you will have to wait for some time before using the extension again.
