John Carpenter's Toxic Commando Isn't on Game Pass, but You Can Still Stream It

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, the co-op horde shooter from Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment, launched on Xbox Series X|S on March 12, 2026. It's drawn plenty of attention from Game Pass subscribers wondering whether they can jump in without buying the game outright. The short answer is no, but there's a cloud-shaped workaround.

Quick answer: John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is not included in the Xbox Game Pass library. You must purchase the game separately. However, if you own it digitally and have any tier of Game Pass (Essential, Premium, or Ultimate), you can stream it through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Why it's not a "free" Game Pass title

Toxic Commando does not appear in the Game Pass catalog as a downloadable title. The Xbox Store listing explicitly states the game is "cloud playable with Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate," but adds a critical qualifier: "Game purchase required." That means your subscription alone won't unlock access. You need to buy the Standard Edition ($39.99) or the Blood Edition ($49.99) through the Xbox Store before any cloud streaming becomes available.

How Xbox Cloud Gaming works with purchased games

Xbox's "Stream Your Own Game" feature lets Game Pass subscribers stream select titles they already own through Xbox Cloud Gaming — no local install required. Toxic Commando was added to the Stream Your Own Game list in mid-March 2026 as part of a wave of 45 new titles. This is distinct from games that are fully included in the Game Pass library at no extra cost.

To use this feature, two conditions must be met:

RequirementDetails
Game ownershipYou must own a digital copy purchased from the Xbox Store (any edition)
Active Game Pass subscriptionAny tier works — Essential, Premium, or Ultimate

Once both conditions are satisfied, the game appears under the "Stream Your Own Game" section within Xbox Cloud Gaming. You can play it on a console, PC, or compatible mobile device without downloading the full game. This is particularly useful for players with limited storage or those who want to play on the go.

⚠️
Stream Your Own Game is not the same as Xbox Remote Play. Remote Play streams from your personal Xbox console over your home network, while Stream Your Own Game runs the game on Microsoft's cloud servers. You don't need a console powered on (or even owned) to use cloud streaming — just a Game Pass subscription and a supported device.

Online multiplayer also requires Game Pass

Even if you buy Toxic Commando and plan to play it locally on your Xbox Series X|S, online co-op on console requires an active Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate subscription. The game supports 2–4 player online co-op with cross-platform support, so this is a meaningful consideration if you're planning to team up with friends. Solo play does not require a subscription beyond the game purchase itself.

Toxic Commando editions and pricing

Two editions are currently available, and either one qualifies for cloud streaming through Game Pass.

EditionPrice (USD)What's included
Standard Edition$39.99Base game
Blood Edition$49.99Base game + Bloody Pass (season pass covering two post-launch DLCs, a cosmetic pack with a gold weapon skin, weapon charm, and one unique skin per character)

The Bloody Pass can also be purchased separately for $12.99 if you already own the Standard Edition and want to upgrade later. It includes cosmetic content for characters, vehicles, and weapons, plus access to the first two DLC drops after launch.

What the game actually is

Developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment, John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is a first-person co-op shooter set in a near-future apocalypse. An experiment gone wrong unleashes the "Sludge God," an eldritch entity that transforms the landscape and its inhabitants into undead horrors. Players pick from multiple commando classes, each with distinct abilities, and fight through horde-style encounters using firearms, grenades, melee weapons, and vehicles. The tone leans heavily into 1980s B-movie horror and action, drawing direct inspiration from John Carpenter's filmography.

The game is optimized for Xbox Series X|S with 4K Ultra HD support, Xbox achievements, cloud saves, and cross-platform co-op. It requires a persistent internet connection to play, even in single-player mode. It's rated Mature 17+ for intense violence, blood and gore, and strong language.

If you're hoping to play Toxic Commando without spending anything beyond your monthly Game Pass fee, that's not currently an option. No announcement has been made about the game joining the Game Pass library as a fully included title. For now, purchasing the game and streaming it through Xbox Cloud Gaming is the closest thing to a Game Pass experience you'll get.
