Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection introduces a mutation system that lets you transform base Monsties into their subspecies and deviant forms. These mutated variants boast higher star ranks, stronger stats, and unique innate skills compared to their originals. There are 17 mutations in total, and every single one is obtained through the game's Habitat Restoration mechanic — you won't find them in the wild or through standard egg hunting.
Quick answer: Mutations are unlocked by raising a base Monstie's ecosystem rank (typically to A or S rank) within a habitat, and many also require specific companion monsters or habitat conditions to be present in the same ecosystem.

How Mutations Work in Habitat Restoration
The mutation process is tied directly to the ecosystem rank your Monstie achieves after being released into a habitat. Every Monstie you release contributes to that habitat's restoration, and as its rank climbs from C through S, new mutations become available. Some mutations only need a high enough rank in any habitat, while others demand that specific monster types, elements, or attack categories share the same ecosystem. Once a mutation triggers, the new variant either appears roaming in the habitat or becomes available as an egg within that area's dens.

Endangered Monsties — Prerequisites for Mutation
Eight Monsties in the game are classified as endangered species. Their eggs can only be found inside the dens of powerful invasive monsters, which you must repel first. Most of the 17 mutations stem from these endangered Monsties, so obtaining them is the critical first step. Below is where each endangered Monstie is found.
| Monstie | Rank | Element | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rathian | ★4 | Fire | Azuria — Sunpetal Plains |
| Lagiacrus | ★5 | Thunder | Azuria — Mirror Lake |
| Astalos | ★5 | Thunder | Azuria — Mirror Lake |
| Nargacuga | ★4 | Non-Elemental | Canalta Timberland — Blessing Hill |
| Mizutsune | ★5 | Water | Canalta Timberland — Frozen Grotto |
| Tigrex | ★5 | Non-Elemental | Tarkuan — Colossal Dragon Remains |
| Zinogre | ★5 | Thunder | Tarkuan — Rococo Rocks |
| Barioth | ★4 | Ice | Serathis — Glacial Caps |
All 17 Mutations and Their Unlock Conditions
The table below lists every mutated Monstie, its base form, the ecosystem rank required, and any additional habitat conditions you need to satisfy. Mutations marked with simpler conditions — just reaching a certain rank — are the easiest to obtain early. The deviant forms (★7 rank) tend to demand S rank plus specific ecosystem compositions.
| Mutation | Rank | Base Monstie | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pink Rathian | ★5 | Rathian | Rathian at B rank in any ecosystem |
| Dreadqueen Rathian | ★7 | Rathian or Pink Rathian | S rank in an ecosystem with 3+ poison monsters |

| Boltreaver Astalos | ★7 | Astalos | S rank Astalos in a Thunder habitat with 3+ base Thunder-element monsters |
| Green Nargacuga | ★5 | Nargacuga | Nargacuga at A rank in any ecosystem |
| Silverwind Nargacuga | ★7 | Nargacuga or Green Nargacuga | S rank in a habitat with 2+ wind-controlling monsters (e.g., Great Izuchi, Legiana, Paolumu) |
| Soulseer Mizutsune | ★7 | Mizutsune | S rank Mizutsune in any habitat with a Zinogre at any rank |
| Stygian Zinogre | ★6 | Zinogre | Zinogre at A rank in any ecosystem |
| Thunderlord Zinogre | ★7 | Zinogre or Stygian Zinogre | S rank in a habitat with a Mizutsune at any rank |
| Brute Tigrex | ★6 | Tigrex | Tigrex at A rank in any ecosystem |
| Grimclaw Tigrex | ★7 | Tigrex or Brute Tigrex | S rank in a habitat with 4+ Power-type monsters |

| Bloodbath Diablos | ★7 | Diablos or Black Diablos | S rank in the Bountiful Dunes (Tarkuan) with both Diablos and Black Diablos present |
| Azure Rathalos | ★6 | Rathalos | Rathalos at A rank in any ecosystem |
| Dreadking Rathalos | ★7 | Rathalos or Azure Rathalos | S rank in a habitat with 4+ Flying Wyverns |

Azuria Mutations — Rathian, Lagiacrus, and Astalos
Rathian is the first endangered Monstie you encounter through the main story, and its initial mutation into Pink Rathian is essentially free. Simply release Rathian into any ecosystem and let it reach B rank. For Dreadqueen Rathian, you need either Rathian or Pink Rathian at S rank alongside three or more poison-type monsters in the same habitat. The Sunpetal Plains already contains Gypceros natively, and by the time Rathian hits S rank, Pink Rathian will have already appeared — giving you three poison monsters without any extra effort.
Ivory Lagiacrus requires only that base Lagiacrus reach A rank in any habitat. No companion monsters or special conditions apply, making it one of the more straightforward mutations.
Boltreaver Astalos is more demanding. You need Astalos at S rank, specifically in a Thunder-type habitat, and three or more other monsters with Thunder as their base element must share that ecosystem. Tobi-Kadachi is a native Thunder species in the Mirror Lake area, so placing Lagiacrus and Ivory Lagiacrus alongside Astalos covers the requirement efficiently.

Canalta Timberland Mutations — Nargacuga and Mizutsune
Green Nargacuga unlocks when base Nargacuga reaches A rank in any habitat. For Silverwind Nargacuga, you need either Nargacuga or Green Nargacuga at S rank with at least two wind-controlling monsters present. The game specifically identifies Great Izuchi, Legiana, and Paolumu as qualifying monsters, and you only need two of the three.
Soulseer Mizutsune has an interesting cross-dependency with Zinogre. Mizutsune must reach S rank in any habitat while a Zinogre of any rank occupies the same ecosystem. Conversely, Thunderlord Zinogre requires a Mizutsune in its habitat. Placing both in the same ecosystem lets you work toward both deviant mutations simultaneously.

Tarkuan Mutations — Zinogre, Tigrex, Diablos, and Glavenus
Stygian Zinogre only needs base Zinogre at A rank. Thunderlord Zinogre, as mentioned, needs S rank plus a Mizutsune companion in the habitat.
Brute Tigrex unlocks at A rank for base Tigrex. Grimclaw Tigrex is trickier — it requires Tigrex or Brute Tigrex at S rank with four Power-type attack monsters in the same habitat. The Colossal Dragon Remains in Tarkuan already has Almudron and Grangolm as native Power types, and Brute Tigrex itself counts as a third. Adding one more Power-type Monstie like Black Diablos completes the requirement.
Bloodbath Diablos has a location-specific condition. Either Diablos or Black Diablos must reach S rank, and both must be present in the Bountiful Dunes, which is the Fire habitat in Tarkuan. No other habitat will work for this mutation.
Hellblade Glavenus needs base Glavenus at S rank alongside four or more monsters with razor-sharp appendages. The game lists Shogun Ceanataur, Seregios, Great Izuchi, and Magnamalo as qualifying companions. Since Glavenus itself counts toward the total, you only need to add three others.

Serathis Mutations — Barioth and Rathalos
Sand Barioth is the lone mutation from the Serathis endangered Monstie. Barioth just needs to hit A rank in any habitat — no companion conditions at all.
Rathalos, which spawns natively in the Sacrosanctum area of Serathis, produces two mutations. Azure Rathalos appears once base Rathalos reaches A rank in any ecosystem. Dreadking Rathalos requires either base or Azure Rathalos at S rank with four or more Flying Wyverns in the same habitat. Since Rathalos is native to the Sacrosanctum and Azure Rathalos will already be present from the first mutation, you only need to add a couple more Flying Wyverns. This monster class is the most common in the game, so filling the requirement is straightforward.
Stat Differences Between Base and Mutated Monsties
Mutated Monsties are not just cosmetic upgrades. Comparing Rathian (★4) to Dreadqueen Rathian (★7) illustrates the gap clearly: HP jumps from 5 to 8, Attack from 6 to 8, and the innate skill set changes entirely. The rank increase alone means mutated variants scale significantly higher in late-game content. Some mutations also shift the Monstie's primary attack type — for example, Boltreaver Astalos switches from Speed to Technical compared to base Astalos.

Practical Tips for Efficient Mutation Farming
The Mizutsune-Zinogre pairing is the most efficient cross-dependency in the game. Placing both in a single habitat lets you unlock Soulseer Mizutsune and Thunderlord Zinogre from the same ecosystem without duplicating effort.
For mutations requiring specific monster categories (Power types, Flying Wyverns, poison monsters), check which native species already occupy a habitat before adding eggs. Many habitats already have one or two qualifying natives, reducing the number of eggs you need to farm and release.
Mutations that only require A rank in any ecosystem — Ivory Lagiacrus, Green Nargacuga, Stygian Zinogre, Brute Tigrex, Sand Barioth, and Azure Rathalos — can be unlocked relatively early just by consistently releasing the base Monstie. The S-rank deviant mutations take longer but reward you with ★7 powerhouses that are among the strongest Monsties in the game.
