New Sanctuary Vault in Fortnite — How to Get Inside

New Sanctuary replaced Classified Canyon on the Golden Coast island when Chapter 7: Season 2 launched on March 19th, 2026. The location was upgraded by The Seven and features 34 chests and 40 ammo boxes spread across the area. Veteran players will remember the underground vault with a big red door that could be opened with a simple button press last season — that button no longer exists, even though chests can still be heard behind the sealed door.

Quick answer: The New Sanctuary vault cannot be opened through the same method used at Classified Canyon. The most likely unlock path is a keycard tied to The Foundation Showdown progression system, which appears as the final reward on the showdown track. No confirmed workaround exists at launch.

Why the vault door won't open right now

When the location transitioned from Classified Canyon to New Sanctuary, Epic Games removed the interactive button that previously granted access to the underground vault. The door itself remains in place, and you can still hear chest audio behind it, but there is no interact prompt, no thermite placement option, and no keycard reader visible nearby. This is a deliberate change tied to the season's new progression mechanics rather than a bug.

The Foundation Showdown keycard

Chapter 7: Season 2 introduced a team-based progression event called The Foundation Showdown. You can find it in the Showdown tab of the in-game menu. Each team has a progression track made up of nodes, and clicking on individual nodes reveals what rewards will be unlocked as the community collectively advances.

The final node on the progression track rewards a keycard. This keycard is widely expected to be the item that opens the sealed vault at New Sanctuary. Until the community reaches that final milestone, the door will remain locked for everyone.

📌
You cannot speed this up individually. The Foundation Showdown progression is community-driven, meaning all players on a given team contribute to advancing through the nodes together.

Teleport tunnel method (unconfirmed)

Some players have reported an alternative approach involving the teleport tunnels within New Sanctuary. The claim is that teleporting through the tunnel one or more times — with an empty inventory slot — can cause an access card to spawn. Picking up that card supposedly lets you interact with the vault door and open it, revealing a blue chest inside.

This method has not been widely verified and may only work under specific conditions or may have been patched. If you want to try it, make sure you have at least one open inventory slot before using the teleporter. If no card appears after a few attempts, the method likely does not work in your current match or build version.

How this vault differs from other Fortnite vaults

Fortnite has featured several vault types across its history, and the New Sanctuary vault does not follow the rules of any standard category. For context, here is how the current vault types compare.

Vault TypeHow to OpenWhere Found
Stronghold VaultPlace thermite on the door, survive four waves of guards, shoot glowing weak points to speed up the processAlpha-controlled locations (Crime City, Masked Meadows, Seaport City, Lonewolf Lair, train)
Keycard VaultEliminate the location's boss, pick up the dropped keycard, use it on the terminal next to the vaultFaction bases (various chapters)
Key VaultCollect one or two keys from the map, interact with the vault doorUnderground bunkers
Unusual VaultVaries by location — break rocks, use specific items, or solve environmental puzzlesHidden spots inside named locations and landmarks

The New Sanctuary vault is essentially a keycard vault, but the keycard is not obtained by defeating a boss. Instead, it is gated behind a community progression event, making it a time-locked reward rather than something you can earn in a single match.

What to do while waiting for the vault to unlock

New Sanctuary is still a strong landing spot even without vault access. With 34 chests and 40 ammo boxes scattered across the location, there is plenty of loot on the surface and in the surrounding structures. The area is owned by The Seven, so expect NPC encounters and environmental storytelling elements that tie into the broader Chapter 7 narrative.

Keep an eye on the Showdown tab to track how close the community is to unlocking the final keycard reward. Once that milestone is reached, the vault should become accessible to anyone who holds the card. No official date has been confirmed for when this will happen — it depends entirely on how quickly players collectively progress through the event nodes.

Check the Showdown tab regularly. Each node on the progression track shows what reward it unlocks, so you will be able to see exactly when the keycard node is close to being reached.

The sealed vault at New Sanctuary is one of those deliberate early-season mysteries that Epic Games uses to keep players engaged over time. The loot behind that door is real — you can hear it — but patience and community effort are the only keys that will open it for now.
