Nioh 3 Insatiable Hunger — How to Unlock, Complete, and Claim Every Reward

Insatiable Hunger is a Warring States–era myth (side quest) in Nioh 3 that tells the grim story of a family torn apart by yokai. It becomes available after you complete The Fall of Edo Castle main mission and enter the Warring States period. The quest takes place entirely in the Tokaido region and culminates in a boss fight against the Gaki Chief.

Quick answer: Find the ghost on the west side of Tokaido near the village outskirts, head east to the ferry area to investigate a corpse, then travel southwest to a group of houses in the forest, defeat the Gaki Chief, and speak with the ghost that appears afterward.

How to unlock Insatiable Hunger

On the west side of Tokaido, just outside the walls of a village, a ghost hovers over a corpse. Interact with it and exhaust all dialogue to trigger the mission. The quest marker appears on the map once your regional exploration level is high enough, but you can also stumble onto the ghost naturally while exploring.

If you have already cleared the Tokaido shrine, fast-travel there and head northeast toward the intersection where the spirit waits. Talking to him kicks off the first objective.

Head to the ferry and clear the enemy base

Step 1: Travel to the east end of Tokaido and locate the Ikeda Ferry shrine. From the shrine, continue east until you reach a yokai encampment. You need to eliminate all seven yokai here to take the enemy base and advance the quest.

Step 2: Start on the left side of the camp and take out the first two enemies. Move toward the shore and dispatch three more yokai there.

Step 3: One yokai sits on a rooftop. Circle behind the house, climb up, and use a stealth attack to remove it quickly. The last enemy in the camp is noticeably tougher than the others, so deal with it once every other threat is gone.

Step 4: After the base falls, loot the chest in the area. A Kodama also hides nearby — picking it up for the first time will unlock a separate side quest called Kodama Seeker, which only requires finding one more Kodama to complete.

Search for clues about the family

With the enemy base cleared, look for a stack of hay bales wedged between two houses near the ferry. Crouch through the gap in the stack and interact with the corpse on the other side. This is Taro's mother's body, and examining it updates your objective to "Retrace Taro's steps."

Collect the item from the corpse to progress. The quest log will now point you southwest, toward a cluster of houses in the forest.

Defeat the Gaki Chief

Follow the path southwest from the ferry area, sticking to the right side of the village as you face the exit. The trail leads directly to the Gaki Chief, a large yokai boss sitting among the forest houses.

Tip: Do not rush in head-on. The Gaki Chief's back is exposed when you first arrive. Sneak behind it and open with a heavy attack to deal significant damage before the fight truly begins. Switching to a Ninja stance afterward lets you stay mobile and punish the boss from behind.

The Gaki Chief hits hard but telegraphs its swings. Watch for wide sweeping attacks and dodge to the side rather than backward. If you brought paralysis-curing items, keep them ready — the boss can inflict status effects that lock you in place.

Complete the mission

Once the Gaki Chief falls, explore the nearby houses. Inside one of them, you will find a chest and a ghost — Taro's father. Speak with him to learn the fate of the family and officially finish the Insatiable Hunger myth. A brief cutscene confirms the quest is done, and your rewards are granted immediately.

The two Paralysis Omamori charms are especially useful in the early game, providing passive resistance to paralysis for whichever combat style you favor. Ninja's Locks are a crafting-adjacent resource worth holding onto for later upgrades.

Insatiable Hunger is one of the more straightforward myths in Nioh 3's Warring States chapter, but the Gaki Chief can catch under-leveled players off guard. Clearing the enemy base first nets you extra loot and a Kodama, so treat the detour as worthwhile preparation before the boss encounter.
