Outer Worlds 2: Better Than Nature — Inez companion quest guide
The Outer Worlds 2How to unlock Inez’s quest, pick the sample, and understand what that choice changes.
“Better Than Nature” is Inez’s first companion quest, and it does more than add a character vignette — it locks in her combat upgrade. Here’s the clean path to trigger it, where to go in Fairfield and Paradise Island, and what the Skeleton Crabble vs. Raptidon Matriarch choice actually means.
Start the quest: recruit Inez and trigger “Better Than Nature”
- Find Inez in the Ministry of Accuracy and send her back to Fairfield. You can stumble into her by exploring or by finishing either “A Refreshing Bit of News” or “Above and Beyond Repair.”
- Fast travel to Fairfield and enter the Town Hall. You’ll catch Inez arguing with Minister Milverstreet. Offer your take, then speak with Inez after she storms out to start her companion quest.

Go to Fairfield’s edge and meet Ethel Tinsley
Once Inez joins, she opens up about her grafted arm. It’s failing, and she needs help fast. She’ll point you to Ethel Tinsley, whose lab sits on the edge of Fairfield with a clear map marker.
Ethel’s diagnosis is straightforward: to replace the defective graft, she needs a biological sample to build a new one. You’re given two viable sources — either will get the job done.

Choose a sample on Paradise Island: Skeleton Crabble or Raptidon Matriarch
The hunt takes place on Paradise Island. You can tackle either target first — and you only need one to progress — but both remain available if you want the extra challenge.
| Option | Quest area | What you do | Impact on Inez |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skeleton Crabble | Paradise Island | Track and defeat the Skeleton Crabble, then collect the sample. | Completes the quest objective and sets her upgrade path. |
| Raptidon Matriarch | Paradise Island | Track and defeat the Raptidon Matriarch, then collect the sample. | Completes the quest objective and sets her upgrade path. |
The choice determines the direction of Inez’s combat abilities. You don’t need both kills to finish the quest, but the option exists to fight both bosses if you want to.

Return the sample to Ethel and finish the graft
Bring the sample back to Ethel Tinsley in Fairfield. She uses it to craft a replacement graft for Inez’s faulty arm. This completes the key step of the companion quest and finalizes Inez’s combat upgrade based on which creature you hunted.

What you get for finishing “Better Than Nature”
- Inez’s upgrade is set: Your chosen sample determines how her abilities behave in combat going forward.
- Quest completion: The companion mission advances her storyline and cements her role in your party.

In short: recruit Inez, hear her out at Town Hall, consult Ethel at Fairfield’s edge, then decide which Paradise Island target to take down. One sample is enough to cure the arm and lock in her upgrade — the only real question is which version of Inez you want at your side.
