Refilling the Oil Lamp in Windrose — Animal Fat, Workbench, and a Timing Trick

Windrose is full of dark caves and shadowy ruins that are nearly impossible to navigate without a light source. The Oil Lamp (sometimes labeled simply as "Lamp" in menus) serves as your portable torch, but it burns through fuel and eventually goes dark. Refilling it is straightforward once you know where to look and what to collect.

Quick answer: Collect 3 Animal Fat from Boars or Sows, then interact with any Workbench, open the Refill / Repair tab, select the Oil Lamp, and confirm.

Where to Find an Oil Lamp

If you haven't picked one up yet, head to the Smuggler's Cache near the center of the starting island. Inside, you'll find two chests — one of them contains a guaranteed Oil Lamp. This is the same location where the Fast Travel Bell can be found, so it's worth visiting early regardless.

Farming Animal Fat From Boars and Sows

Animal Fat is the only fuel the Oil Lamp accepts, and it drops from pig-type wildlife on the starting island. Three animal variants can drop it: Boar, Charging Boar, and Sow. All three roam the starting island in decent numbers, so you won't need to travel far.

Animal Fat is not a guaranteed drop from every kill. Sows in particular can be stingy — you may take down two or three without seeing any fat at all. Boars, on the other hand, drop Animal Fat at a noticeably higher rate and are the most reliable source. If you're farming specifically for lamp fuel, prioritize Boars over Sows.

Tip: Boars hit hard and can be dangerous in groups. If you're still in early-game gear, try to isolate one at a time. Dodging their charge attacks is critical — bait out a swipe, dodge to the side, and land a couple of hits before backing off.

Refilling the Oil Lamp at a Workbench

Step 1: Approach any Workbench and interact with it (press E on keyboard by default). If you haven't built one yet, open Building Mode, navigate to Crafting & Utilities, and place a Workbench.

Step 2: Switch to the Refill / Repair tab at the top of the Workbench interface. This tab is separate from the normal crafting menu, so it's easy to miss on your first visit.

Step 3: Select the Oil Lamp from the list and press Confirm. The lamp consumes exactly 3 Animal Fat per refill, and your fuel gauge resets to full.

The Flat-Cost Refill and Why Timing Matters

Here's the detail that catches most players off guard: the refill always costs 3 Animal Fat regardless of how depleted the lamp is. Whether the fuel bar is sitting at 1% or 99%, the price is the same flat 3. That means topping off a nearly full lamp wastes almost all of the Animal Fat you spend.

The optimal approach is to run the lamp as low as you're comfortable with before refilling. Draining it close to empty gives you the most light per unit of fat. Just don't push your luck too far — running out of fuel inside a dark dungeon with hostile enemies is a fast way to lose progress.

Once you've confirmed the refill at the Workbench, the lamp's fuel bar returns to full, and you're ready to head back into the dark. Keep a small stockpile of Animal Fat in your storage so you're never caught scrambling for fuel before an expedition. Boars respawn regularly on the starting island, making it easy to top up your reserves between trips.
