Roberto build guide for Megabonk’s Spooky Update

Roberto arrives in Megabonk’s Spooky Update as a fragile but explosive DPS character. His kit is built around constant loot, aggressive positioning, and unusually strong mobility, and the right setup turns him into a roaming blender that rarely has to stop moving.

Roberto’s kit, strengths, and weaknesses

Roberto is defined by three core elements: the Scythe, his Hoarder passive, and his ability to float.

Scythe (starter weapon). Roberto always begins with the Scythe, a projectile weapon that swings in a full 360-degree arc around him. It hits multiple enemies per attack, has solid base damage, and scales cleanly with Size, Quantity, Cooldown, and Damage upgrades. The Scythe also charges a stronger attack whenever you kill an Elite enemy, so it rewards you for consistently clearing tougher targets.

Hoarder (passive). Hoarder automatically spawns a free chest every 60 seconds. As Roberto levels up, the chest interval shifts to 120 seconds, but you still receive a steady stream of extra loot throughout the run. That passive makes item quality and Luck far more important than on most characters, since you’re opening many more chests than usual.

Float (movement). Roberto can float, effectively “bunny-hopping” across the map and playing further off the ground than other characters. This gives excellent control over your spacing, but it also punishes mistakes because you will be hovering near enemy packs with relatively low base HP.

Strengths:

  • Constant free chests through Hoarder, enabling very fast item scaling.
  • Strong circular coverage with Scythe and any size-scaling weapons.
  • Top-tier mobility thanks to float and movement-focused items.

Weaknesses:

  • Low base health and poor early survivability.
  • Relies heavily on item quality; bad chest rolls hurt more than on other characters.
  • Needs at least one reliable ranged weapon to handle bosses and distant threats.

Core Roberto build overview (Floaty Killer)

Roberto’s most consistent build focuses on three goals: stay alive long enough to scale, abuse Hoarder for high-tier loot, and stack both close-range and ranged damage while you kite and float.

Slot Core picks Alternatives / notes
Weapons Scythe, Aura, Bone or Revolver, Lightning Staff or Blood Magic Other ranged options such as Bananarang also work well once you have Size and Damage.
Tomes Luck Tome, Size Tome, Damage or Quantity Tome, Agility Tome or Cooldown Tome Regen Tome is a viable defensive swap if you’re struggling to survive.
Items Feathers, Chonkplate, Holy Book, Old Mask, Overpowered Lamp, Turbo Socks, Beefy Ring, Scarf, Speed Boi, Sucky Magnet Other high-impact items like Moldy Cheese, Time Bracelet, Anvil, and Credit Cards are worth grabbing whenever they appear.

Everything in this setup leans into what Roberto already does well. Aura, Scythe, and Size upgrades create a lethal zone around you, while one or two ranged weapons deal with targets that never get close enough to be caught in the circle. Hoarder floods you with items, and heavy Luck investment makes those chests more likely to contain Epic and Legendary gear.

Weapons for Roberto (melee coverage plus safe ranged damage)

Roberto’s weapon loadout should begin with his Scythe and then fill out into a mix of permanent area coverage and long-range damage.

  • Scythe. Always keep and upgrade this. The full-circle swing works perfectly with Size Tome and any item that boosts projectile count or damage. Its elite-kill charge mechanic helps with burst windows on tougher enemies.
  • Aura. Aura is the second key weapon slot. It creates a persistent damage zone around Roberto, smoothing out early waves, farming XP faster, and compensating for his lack of health by killing small mobs before they touch him. It scales especially well with Size Tome and any global damage increases.
  • Bone or Revolver. These are ideal mid-range tools because of their bounce behavior. They ricochet through packs and help you clear while you float past enemies instead of diving into them. Bone fits naturally into many metas; Revolver leans a bit more into focused projectile DPS.
  • Lightning Staff or Blood Magic. These weapons bring real area-of-effect reach. With enough upgrades, Lightning Staff repeatedly strikes groups of enemies at range, while Blood Magic can turn into a wide-coverage AoE solution. Either option pairs well with Damage Tome or Cooldown Tome for rapid, map-wide clearing.

Other compatible weapons:

  • Bananarang. Works as a flexible ranged option that adds horizontal coverage and keeps distant enemies chipped down while your Scythe and Aura finish closer threats.
  • Dexecutioner. Once you’re already committed to Size Tome and strong damage scaling, Dexecutioner synergizes well with Roberto’s playstyle by occasionally deleting elites outright.
Tip: whatever combination you choose, always reserve at least one slot for a true ranged weapon (Revolver, Bone, Lightning Staff, Blood Magic, or Bananarang). Purely melee-centric lineups tend to stall against durable bosses and off-screen elites.

Best Tomes for Roberto (Luck, Size, and tempo)

Roberto’s tomes determine whether his Hoarder passive and Scythe actually reach their potential. Certain choices are close to mandatory if you want a high-performing run.

  • Luck Tome. This is the single most important tome for Roberto. Because Hoarder generates free chests at fixed intervals, higher Luck translates directly into better chest rewards, more high-tier items, and faster access to critical pieces like Chonkplate or Overpowered Lamp. Picking Luck Tome early dramatically accelerates the entire build.
  • Size Tome. Size increases the radius of Scythe and Aura, letting you hit more enemies without changing your positioning. On Roberto, this also helps compensate for Scythe’s limited base range. Size Tome is one of the most efficient damage and safety upgrades he can get.
  • Damage or Quantity Tome. Either choice works, depending on your weapon lineup. Damage Tome boosts all of your hits, which is particularly strong once you have Lightning Staff or Blood Magic online. Quantity Tome adds more projectiles and hits, which pairs well with Bone, Revolver, and any execute-based weapons if you include them.
  • Agility Tome or Cooldown Tome. Agility increases movement speed, directly supporting Roberto’s float-heavy playstyle and making it easier to kite dense waves. Cooldown Tome is a strong alternative when you already have movement items like Feathers and Turbo Socks, since shorter cooldowns let you output much more DPS and keep your defensive weapons firing more frequently.

Defensive tomes such as Regen can fill a flex slot if you find yourself losing runs to chip damage rather than burst. However, on Roberto, the usual priority is to scale Luck and size first, then address movement and raw DPS.

Items that make Roberto’s Hoarder passive shine

Items are where Roberto truly separates himself from other characters. Hoarder guarantees frequent chests, so your build should be built around finding and stacking high-value items as early as possible.

For Roberto’s float-focused build, items can be grouped into four roles: survivability, movement, item quality, and damage/utility.

Survivability items (patching Roberto’s low HP)

  • Chonkplate. This is a priority pick. Chonkplate lets you overheal beyond your normal maximum HP, functioning like a second health bar in the late game. On a character that starts out squishy, that buffer is often the difference between surviving a stray hit and losing a run.
  • Holy Book and Old Mask. These items contribute additional defensive padding through HP, mitigation, or sustain effects. Stacking several HP-boosting and defensive items early stabilizes Roberto’s fragile start so that you can safely lean into offensive scaling later.
  • Medkit and Oats. When available, healing and sustain items offer a safety net while you learn Roberto’s float timing and kiting. These are especially useful if you often get clipped by projectiles or ground effects.

Movement items (unlocking true “floating” play)

  • Feathers. Feathers directly improve Roberto’s aerial control, making his float feel more responsive and letting you weave more aggressively through enemy waves.
  • Turbo Socks and Speed Boi. Both items increase movement speed. Combined with Agility Tome, these transform Roberto into a high-speed kiter who can reposition constantly while his weapons do the work.
  • Scarf and Slippery Ring. Scarf and evasion-focused items like Slippery Ring make your movement safer by reducing the chance of being hit while dashing or gliding around enemy clusters.
Note: if you pick up Feathers and Turbo Socks early, you can safely favor Cooldown Tome over Agility Tome to squeeze more DPS out of your weapons while already having excellent mobility.

Luck and XP items (supercharging Hoarder)

  • Clover. Clover is the main Luck item that syncs with Hoarder. More Luck means a higher chance that chests from your passive drop Epic and Legendary items, which quickly snowballs your power. Clover works especially well when paired with Luck Tome.
  • Credit Card Green and Credit Card Red. These cards increase the efficiency of your item economy, improving the quality of shop and chest offers and making it easier to assemble a full set of high-impact items for Roberto.
  • Sucky Magnet. This improves pickup radius, helping you vacuum XP orbs without diving deep into packs. Higher and more consistent XP income means more levels, more tomes, and more items, all of which feed back into Hoarder’s value.

Damage and utility items (closing out runs)

  • Overpowered Lamp. This is one of the meta-breaking items for endgame damage. Once added to a solid foundation of weapons and tomes, it greatly accelerates how quickly you clear waves and bosses.
  • Gym Sauce and Beefy Ring. These push Roberto’s weapon damage even higher, amplifying the value of your Scythe, Aura, and ranged weapons. They pair nicely with global damage tomes.
  • Time Bracelet, Anvil, Moldy Cheese. These meta items offer a mix of increased uptime, power spikes, and reliability, and are always worth slotting if you have room.
  • Cursed Doll and Grandma’s Secret Tonic. Cursed Doll applies percentage-based damage to nearby enemies, which is effective against elites and bosses. Grandma’s Secret Tonic, when combined with critical chance and the right tomes, can create large AoE explosions around crits, further smoothing wave clear.
  • Backpack. Backpack adds extra projectiles to your weapons, synergizing well with Quantity Tome and projectile-rich weapons such as Lightning Staff and Bone.

Because Hoarder constantly feeds you new items, it’s worth toggling low-tier items off so chests lean toward higher-quality drops. With Luck Tome and Clover online, Roberto can often assemble a mostly Legendary item board well before the end of the first tier of difficulty.

How to play Roberto effectively (early, mid, and late game)

Roberto’s gameplay loop changes as you scale. The early minutes are about survival and setup; later waves are about aggressive kiting and boss control.

Early game. At the start, Roberto is vulnerable. Prioritize survivability and control:

  • Take Aura as soon as possible to establish a constant damage field around you.
  • Grab HP and defensive items such as Chonkplate candidates and simple health boosts.
  • Pick Luck Tome early and begin stacking Luck items like Clover, so your first few Hoarder chests have a higher chance of strong items.

During this phase, stay conservative with your float movement. Use small hops to stay just outside melee range and let Scythe and Aura chip down approaching enemies.

Mid game. Once you have reliable defense and at least one ranged weapon:

  • Add Bone, Revolver, Lightning Staff, Blood Magic, or Bananarang to extend your reach.
  • Invest in Size Tome to dramatically increase the coverage of Scythe and Aura.
  • Start picking up movement items such as Feathers, Turbo Socks, and Speed Boi.

At this stage, your playstyle becomes more about circling and weaving through waves, using float to reposition constantly while projectiles bounce or strike across the screen. Your free chests should be producing meaningful upgrades almost every time.

Late game. With a fully fleshed-out kit:

  • Round out your damage with items like Overpowered Lamp, Gym Sauce, Beefy Ring, and execute-style weapons if you added them.
  • Leverage Cooldown or Quantity Tome to keep your ranged weapons and crowd control active as often as possible.
  • Use float aggressively to keep bosses at the edge of your Aura and Scythe radius while ranged weapons chip them down from safety.

By this point, Roberto’s main risk is sudden burst damage from overlapping elite attacks or environmental hazards. The overheal buffer from Chonkplate and any regen or sustain items you picked help mitigate those spikes, but you still want to maintain disciplined movement and avoid standing still inside large enemy packs.

How to unlock Roberto and the Scythe

Roberto is one of Megabonk’s tougher characters to add to your roster, and you need access to the Scythe before you can unlock him.

Step 1: Unlock the Graveyard map by completing the relevant challenge on Desert and defeating the boss required to open that map. This involves summoning and defeating a special statue boss during a Calcium run on Desert.

Step 2: Enter the Graveyard map and clear all four coffin mini-bosses to gather the crypt keys. Use them to open the crypt that leads to Big Bob.

Step 3: Defeat Big Bob in Graveyard to unlock the Scythe weapon in the armory, then purchase it so it becomes available for your runs.

Step 4: With the Scythe unlocked, defeat Spooky Steve in the Graveyard’s second crypt encounter. After killing Spooky Steve, you will be offered the chance to unlock Roberto.

Note: during the Spooky Steve fight, you must watch for the arena darkening and move into light sources before the incoming wave of energy hits. Failing to stand in the light results in an instant death, regardless of how strong your build is.

Roberto rewards players who are comfortable managing position and item economy at the same time. Once you patch his low health with early defensive items, stack Luck to exploit Hoarder, and commit to a blend of circular coverage plus safe ranged damage, he shifts from a fragile ghost into one of Megabonk’s most satisfying high-mobility damage dealers.
