Skate (Early Access) — Make Money and Unlock Free Cosmetics
Skate.Learn how Rip Chips and San Van Bucks work, and how to farm rewards efficiently.

Skate is a free-to-play live game with two currencies and an in-game shop. Cosmetics can be earned through play and via an optional premium currency called San Van Bucks, and new map areas are planned as free updates. See the official overview for platform and monetization details at the skate. FAQ: https://www.ea.com/games/skate/skate/faq.
Know the currencies and where to spend them
Skate uses two currencies. Rip Chips are earned strictly by playing, and San Van Bucks are the optional premium currency. In the Store tab (rightmost tab on the top bar from the main menu), your balances appear at the top; Rip Chips use an orange hexagon icon, and San Van Bucks use a pink bird icon. Boxes that consume Rip Chips to unlock cosmetics are placed near the bottom of the Store page, grouped by neighborhood.

- Rip Chips: Gameplay-earned currency used to open neighborhood boxes for cosmetics.
- San Van Bucks: Optional premium currency used to purchase select shop bundles and items.
- Store navigation: Open the main menu while in a lobby, tab to Store, then scroll to view boxes by district.
Method 1: Farm Rip Chips from neighborhood challenges
Opening boxes with Rip Chips is the primary way to get free cosmetics. Each box corresponds to a San Vansterdam district and requires a set amount of Rip Chips to open; higher-tier boxes require more Rip Chips but offer rarer items.
Step 1: Open the world map and zoom out to see neighborhood boundaries and names. This helps you pick a district to focus your challenge runs.
Step 2: Use fast travel to reach the target neighborhood if you have unlocked a bus stop there. Fast travel reduces downtime between attempts.
Step 3: Open the Missions tab to track available tasks in that area. Prioritize challenges that award Rip Chips to build your balance quickly.

Step 4: Complete the challenges, then return to the Store. Scroll to the district’s section near the bottom and open a box using your Rip Chips.

Step 5: Rotate districts to clear more challenges and gather enough Rip Chips for higher-tier boxes. Repeat as neighborhoods refresh with new challenges over time.
Method 2: Progress missions to unlock fast travel and more challenge routes
Missions are spread across neighborhoods and act as a backbone for progression. They award Rip Chips and unlock conveniences that speed up future farming.
Step 1: Open the Missions tab from the main menu and set an active mission. This provides a clear route and rewards as you skate.
Step 2: Finish missions that unlock new fast travel points (e.g., bus stops). Faster movement between districts increases your time on attempts, not transit.

Step 3: Revisit neighborhoods you’ve leveled to check for newly available challenges. More unlocked areas means more concurrent paths to earn Rip Chips.
Method 3: Spend Rip Chips smartly in boxes
Rip Chip boxes escalate in cost; pacing your openings ensures steady wardrobe growth without stalling your grind.
Step 1: Start with lower-tier boxes in a district to build a baseline of items. These require fewer Rip Chips, giving you frequent early unlocks.

Step 2: Save for higher-tier boxes once you’ve cleared early tiers. These boxes cost more Rip Chips but can yield rarer cosmetics.
Step 3: Check multiple districts before spending. If you’re close to a higher-tier box in one neighborhood, a short challenge sprint there might be more efficient than opening a lower-tier box elsewhere.
Method 4: Use San Van Bucks for specific items (optional)
Premium bundles and select cosmetics can be purchased directly with San Van Bucks. This is optional and separate from the Rip Chip box flow.
Step 1: Open Store and review featured bundles and item groups that list San Van Bucks as the cost. Confirm the icon and price before purchasing.
Step 2: Prioritize purchases that fill gaps you can’t reliably target in boxes. Direct buys are best for specific looks you want immediately.
Step 3: Reassess after content updates. Pricing, availability, and shop layout can shift during early access; plan purchases around current offers.
Speed up your grind: practical skating tips
A few core systems reduce retries and help you clear trick- and route-based requirements faster, translating to more Rip Chips per session.
- Session markers: Place a marker with
Up
on the D-Pad at your setup spot. After each attempt, instantly reset to repeat lines without skating back. - Fast travel: Unlock and use bus stops to jump between neighborhoods. This minimizes transit time when switching to higher-value challenges.
- Parkour routes: Hop off your board and climb to ideal starting platforms. Reaching better angles or speed drops can make trick chains consistent.
- Skatepedia: Open the in-game Skatepedia from the main menu to review the trick list and terminology. Knowing exact inputs cuts failed attempts on specific challenge requirements.
