The Mysterious 49th Fish in Roblox Abyss Was Never Real

Roblox Abyss has built a dedicated playerbase around its deep-sea fishing loop, where you harpoon everything from common Clownfish near the Forgotten Deep dome to Mythical Dragonfish lurking in Spirit Roots' underground tunnels. The game tracks every species you've caught in an in-game Bestiary, and after the Fish Pond update, players noticed something strange: a 49th entry that nobody could fill. Discord and Reddit lit up with theories about a secret fish hidden behind a special quest or tucked away in an undiscovered location.

Quick answer: There are no secret fish in Abyss. The developers confirmed the 49th Bestiary slot was a visual bug introduced with the Fish Pond update. All 48 fish in the game can be caught through normal gameplay — no hidden steps required.

What Happened With the 49th Bestiary Slot

The Fish Pond update added new functionality to Abyss but also introduced a UI glitch that displayed an extra, unfilled entry at the end of the Bestiary. Because the game already features fish spread across multiple biomes with rarities ranging from Common to Mythical, players reasonably assumed this empty slot represented something genuinely elusive. Community members began combing every corner of the map, from the Angler Cave's deepest chambers to the cliffside spawns near Morveth's Cave, searching for what they believed was a hidden 49th species.

The developers eventually addressed the confusion directly, clarifying that no new fish had been added with that update. The phantom entry was simply a display error. As of the Fish Pond update, the actual fish count sits at 48 catchable species.

Every Fish Location and Rarity in Abyss

Since there's no secret fish to hunt, the real challenge is filling out the Bestiary legitimately. Fish are distributed across five main zones, each with its own pool of species. The deeper and more dangerous the area, the rarer and more valuable the catches become.

The Sunken Wilds update added additional species beyond these core fish, including Discus, Tambaqui, Jaguar Shark, Sea Turtle, Toucan Fish, Trout, Sacabambaspis, Mosasaurus, and Pelican Eel. None of these require secret methods to catch — they spawn naturally in their respective zones.

Tips for Tracking Down Rare Spawns

Legendary and Mythical fish don't appear on every server. The Bluefin Tuna, for example, spawns in the Ocean zone near the Angler Cave entrance or around Morveth's Cave, but you may need to hop between servers multiple times before one shows up. The Ancient Shark in Ancient Sands behaves similarly, often circling the large mountain formation near Crazy Jeff's shop. Bigmouthfish spawn scattered throughout Ancient Sands without a consistent fixed location, making them particularly frustrating to pin down.

In Spirit Roots, the Dragonfish and Whale share the same spawn area behind the main tree, near where the Golem resides. Server hopping is the most reliable strategy for both. The King Anglerfish sits at the very bottom of the Angler Cave's deepest chamber, which requires completing the Lost Captain's full quest chain before you can access it.

💡
When the game flashes "a rare fish has appeared in your ocean," it signals that a higher-tier fish with a rare mutation has spawned on your server. Drop what you're doing and hunt it down — mutated fish sell for significantly more gold.

Fish Value and Mutations

Every fish you catch has a star rating from one to three stars, which directly affects its sell price. Three-star fish sell at full value (x1 multiplier), two-star fish at 75 percent, and one-star fish at only 20 percent. Mutations stack on top of this system with their own multipliers. The most valuable mutation in the game is Abyssal at 8.5x value, followed by Angelic at 7.77x and Shadow at 6.66x. Landing a three-star Mythical fish with an Abyssal mutation is one of the fastest ways to earn gold.

You sell fish to the Kraken NPC at the main starting area. If you'd rather not swim back every time your inventory fills up, the Sell Anywhere game pass lets you offload catches from any location.

Will Future Updates Add a Secret Fish?

The next Abyss update, scheduled for Wednesday, March 18th, introduces the Mushroom Biome — a brand-new area with its own set of guns, tubes, quests, NPCs, and fish. The developers have confirmed that the new fish will be standard catches obtainable through normal gameplay, not hidden behind puzzles or secret triggers. That said, the dev team hasn't ruled out adding genuinely secret content in later updates. The possibility remains open, but nothing along those lines has been officially announced.

For now, every fish in Abyss can be caught the same way: find it swimming in its designated zone, hit it with your harpoon, and keep the green bar steady until the catch meter fills. If your Bestiary shows a gap, it's a spawn you haven't encountered yet — not a mystery waiting to be solved.
