If you need to reach the Vox Relay in the north of Paradise Island, “For Whom the Bridge Tolls” is the most direct path. The Warden controlling the Bridge of the Reverent will grant clearance only after you deliver two traitors for execution. In practice, that means recovering proof of Ida Rutledge’s death and persuading Charlton Weintraut to show up at the bridge.

Start the quest at the Bridge of the Reverent (missable condition)

  • Travel the road straight to the bridge gate; avoid the shoulders — the open areas beside the path are mined.
  • Speak with Senior Warden Weintraut and agree to bring two traitors in exchange for safe crossing.
  • Missable: You must start this quest before being spotted trespassing in any northern Protectorate area. If they have a record of you crossing north, Weintraut turns hostile, and this path is closed.

Weintraut’s standard targets are Ida Rutledge and her cousin, Charlton Weintraut.

Target 1: Ida Rutledge — recover the severed arm

Head to the Spire Grove in the island’s southwest. At the base of the cliff, you’ll find a broken elevator.

  • Engineering 3: Repair the elevator and ride up.
  • No Engineering 3: Climb the stacked crates left of the elevator and scramble up to the cliff instead.

At the top, you’ll witness a fall and meet workers stranded in a tower. They confirm Ida is dead. Search the nearby machinery for a severed arm — this grisly item is sufficient proof for the Warden.

Tip: You can take on the workers’ related tasks if you want, but they aren’t required for this quest. Your only objective here is collecting Ida’s arm.

Target 2: Charlton Weintraut — expose his secrets, then persuade him

Find Charlton in Westport (he lingers near the main building). He’ll initially refuse to leave. To progress, you need leverage and, ultimately, a Speech 3 check.

Gather leverage in Westport

  • Locate Charlton’s house in the lower, flooded section of Westport. Expect hostile Crabbles nearby.
  • On his terminal, read the “Hidden Ambitions” entry to confirm he’s sympathetic to Auntie’s Choice.
  • Collect a case of his preferred blueberry sweets; he’s visibly hooked (watch for telltale purple stains from “Purpleberry Krunch”).
  • Optional pickup: the Shaina Grade Tossball Card on the desk provides a permanent health increase.

With this intel, return to Charlton. He’ll soften, but he still won’t commit to leaving on the spot. He wants Vigilant Hogarth’s buy-in, which ties his availability to a separate thread.

Move Charlton to Fairfield, then pass the Speech 3 check

Advance the Westport storyline via “The Brain Benders of Auntie’s Choice” until Charlton and Vigilant Hogarth relocate to Fairfield. You’ll find Charlton at the reception desk in the main building.

At this point, a Speech 3 option appears that lets you push him into going to the bridge. Use the following dialogue sequence:

  • “There’s an issue at the bridge that requires a true devotee. Someone willing to sacrifice.” (quest must be active)
  • “You work for Auntie’s Choice now. Uh… go convert your cousin Marilyn to the cause, too.” (Speech 2)
  • “What happened to ‘I throw caution to the wind!’? Are you a Get Up and Go Getter, or not?” (Speech 3)

Expect to need Speech 3 to close this out. Gathering his sympathies and addiction evidence helps unlock repeat attempts, but does not replace the final check.

Return to the bridge to complete the deal

  • When Charlton arrives, the Warden proceeds with the execution. You can mention his Purpleberry Krunch habit for a small bonus payout (+50 Bits and extra XP).
  • Hand over Ida’s severed arm and confirm its origin to satisfy the second requirement.

Rewards: 2160 XP and ongoing, unhassled access across the Bridge of the Reverent. This opens the route to the northern portion of Paradise Island used by the Vox Relay objective and other quests.

Note: Gaining bridge access doesn’t automatically grant full entry to the Vox Relay itself; you’re only removing the gate at the river.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

  • Arriving from the north first: If you’re caught trespassing in northern Protectorate areas before speaking to Weintraut, she becomes hostile and this quest path is blocked.
  • Skipping the Speech checks: Charlton’s final agreement requires Speech 3. You can’t bypass that with evidence alone.
  • Rushing the bridge after completion: Bridge access unlocks the crossing, not automatic entry to everything north of it. Plan for separate gates or requirements inside the Vox Relay area.

Once the bridge is open, the island effectively doubles in scope. If you prefer to avoid the moral weight of this quest, there are other, more elaborate routes to the north, but this one is the most straightforward once you’ve hit the Engineering and Speech thresholds outlined above.
