Thorium Ingot in Hytale: Locations, Smelting, and Crafting Uses

Thorium Ingot is one of the key midgame materials in Hytale, sitting at the center of several armor, weapon, and tool recipes. It starts as a mineral embedded in desert rock, turns into metal in a furnace, and eventually becomes part of some of the first serious gear sets you’ll rely on to survive tougher zones.

Where to find Thorium Ore in Hytale

Thorium exists in two main forms in Hytale: Thorium Ore and Thorium Ingot. To get ingots reliably, the usual path is to mine the ore yourself.

Thorium Ore appears in desert-style regions such as Badlands and the Howling Desert. Look for it inside caverns or buried in the underground layers of these biomes. The blocks are easy to pick out from the sandstone and rock around them because they have a distinct green color and jut out slightly from surrounding surfaces, including floors and walls.

Once you spot a Thorium vein, use a pickaxe to break the blocks and collect the ore. Even the basic Wooden Pickaxe can mine Thorium, but an Iron Pickaxe or better speeds up the process and makes long farming runs more practical. Carrying repair kits lets you fix your tools on the go instead of returning to a Workbench every time a pickaxe is about to break.

Note: In Creative Mode, using a pickaxe on Thorium blocks destroys them instead of dropping ore. Switch to Adventure-style play if you want to stockpile Thorium legitimately.

How to get Thorium Ingots: mining and drops

There are two main ways to obtain Thorium Ingots: smelting the ore you mine or looting them from certain enemies.

Method 1: Smelt Thorium Ore in a Furnace

Step 1: Farm Thorium Ore in desert biomes like Badlands or the Howling Desert until you have a decent stack. Focus on caves, cliffs, and underground layers where ore blocks are exposed.

Step 2: Return to your base or any established camp that has a Furnace. Make sure you have enough fuel ready, so the Furnace can run without interruption.

Step 3: Interact with the Furnace and place Thorium Ore in the input slot. Thorium does not require any special smelter variant, so a regular Furnace is enough.

Step 4: Wait for the smelting process to complete, then collect the Thorium Ingots from the output. Repeat the process until you have the number of ingots you need for your target recipes.

Method 2: Loot Thorium Ingots from enemies

Thorium Ingots can also drop directly from certain foes, which is useful if you enjoy combat-focused progression.

Step 1: Travel to a volcanic island. These areas are more dangerous than early-game deserts, so bring solid gear and plenty of healing before you go.

Step 2: Hunt down armored skeletons in this region. These enemies are tougher than basic mobs and can hit hard, but they have a chance to drop Thorium Ingots when defeated.

Step 3: Clear groups of armored skeletons repeatedly until you gather enough ingots. This method trades consistency for speed; you skip the smelting step but rely on RNG and your combat readiness.

Thorium Ingot crafting overview

Thorium Ingots feed into several midgame crafting paths, mostly unlocked at Tier 2 workstations. They show up in armor sets, melee and ranged weapons, utilities like shields, and gathering tools that push your progression into higher-tier zones.

The table below summarizes the main recipes that consume Thorium Ingots and where they are crafted.

Thorium armor: Helm, Cuirass, Gauntlets, Greaves, Shield

Thorium armor pieces are crafted at an Armorer's Workbench and represent a solid midgame defensive setup. Every armor piece leans heavily on Thorium Ingots and is padded out with Medium Leather, Linen Scraps, and Venom Sacs.

The Thorium Helm needs 11 ingots alongside a small set of Medium Leather and Linen Scraps plus Venom Sacs. The Thorium Cuirass is the most ingot-hungry armor piece at 20 ingots, backed by more leather and linen and several Venom Sacs. Thorium Gauntlets and Greaves sit in the middle in terms of ingot cost but still require a mix of leather, linen, and venom-based components.

The Thorium Shield uses fewer ingots than a full armor piece at 5 ingots, but still consumes Medium Leather and Linen Scraps. It is a natural pickup if you favor blocking and want to round out a Thorium-heavy defensive kit without committing to every armor slot at once.

Thorium weapons and tools at the Blacksmith's Anvil and Workbench

On the offensive side, Thorium allows you to branch into several weapon archetypes. All combat recipes use Thorium Ingots plus Medium Leather and Linen Scraps and are crafted at a Blacksmith's Anvil.

The Thorium Sword uses 8 ingots and offers a straightforward melee option. The Thorium Mace and Thorium Battleaxe both demand 12 ingots each, reflecting their heavier role in combat. For agile playstyles, Thorium Daggers consume 6 ingots and pair with smaller amounts of leather and linen. Ranged players can invest 8 ingots into a Thorium Shortbow, again backed by Medium Leather and Linen Scraps.

For gathering and building out your infrastructure, Thorium tools sit a tier above basic gear. A Thorium Hatchet crafted at a standard Workbench uses 6 ingots plus Medium Leather and Linen Scraps and lets you cut wood more efficiently than early tools. The Thorium Pickaxe uses the same material spread and becomes one of the most important upgrades for ongoing mining, letting you harvest resources faster and stay out longer before tools wear down.

Thorium in utility and support items

Thorium doesn’t only support direct combat and gathering. At the Arcanist's Workbench, it shows up in more specialized support gear.

The standout example is the Healing Totem, which requires 20 Thorium Ingots along with 50 Essence of Life and 10 Greater Health Potions. This recipe pushes you to combine exploration, combat, and resource planning, since it ties together magical essences, crafted consumables, and a large Thorium investment into a single supportive item.

Thorium Ingots sit at a natural crossroads in Hytale’s early and midgame: you mine desert veins or fight armored skeletons, convert ore in a Furnace, then decide whether those ingots become armor, weapons, tools, or utility items. Planning which recipes you want first makes your time in Badlands caverns or volcanic islands far more efficient, and keeps your progression through tougher biomes on track.
