Unlocking Star Fishing's Frozen Flame Rod — Every Quest and Orb You Need

The Frozen Flame Rod is one of the two top-tier rods in Star Fishing, sitting at Strength 9 alongside the far more expensive Crimson Rod. With 750 Luck and 5x Reel Speed, it can handle every fishing location in the game — including the Negative Galaxy — while costing a fraction of what the Crimson Rod demands. Getting it, though, requires completing a multi-step questline across several NPCs, gathering three Mysterious Orbs, and navigating a lava-filled obstacle course inside the Library.

Quick answer: Collect three Mysterious Orbs by finishing Bill's Challenge and both of Mini Merlin's quests, complete the Librarian's two Library Door quests and pay him $1,000,000, then enter the locked room, place the orbs on three platforms, and parkour across the lava pit to pick up the rod.

Both the rod and its matching Frozen Flame Bobber are found in the same hidden room, so you pick them up at the same time. The bobber alone adds 350 Luck and holds 9 stars per cast, making the pair a significant upgrade over the Crystal Rod and Crystal Bobber from the previous tier.

Collecting three Mysterious Orbs

The entire Frozen Flame Rod questline hinges on obtaining exactly three Mysterious Orbs. Two different NPCs hand them out as quest rewards, and you must finish all three quests before you can proceed to the Library.

Bill's Challenge (1 orb)

Bill stands outside a small house right next to the Magic Shop (the potions shop). His single quest, Bill's Challenge, asks you to catch 5,000 stars total. There's no rarity requirement — any star counts. Completing it awards one Mysterious Orb, 250 XP, and 250 Gems. If you've been grinding cash at higher-level spots, you may already be close to this threshold without realizing it.

Mini Merlin's quests (2 orbs)

Mini Merlin lives inside Gilbert's Magic Tree, which is located near the Andromeda fishing spot next to the Gilbert NPC. Note that the Magic Tree doesn't exist at the start of the game — you need to finish all of Gilbert's quests first to make it spawn.

Step 1: Accept Merlin's Magic Orbs [1]. You need to hand over 20 Black Hole, 15 The First Light, and 15 Nebula. Black Hole is a Legendary star (1 in 5,999 odds) found at Hoag's Object, Centaurus A, and The Eye. The First Light and Nebula are both Mythic rarity, appearing at Andromeda, Centaurus A, and The Eye with odds of 1 in 50,000 and 1 in 19,999, respectively. Completing this quest gives one Mysterious Orb, 250 EXP, and 250 Gems.

Step 2: Accept Merlin's Magic Orbs [2]. This time, Merlin wants 15 1i Oumuamua, 5 2i Borisov, and 15 3i ATLAS. All three are Interstellar-rarity stars that only appear at The Eye, a temporary fishing location that spawns for 15 minutes with a 15-minute cooldown between appearances. Their odds range from 1 in 150,000 (1i Oumuamua) to 1 in 300,000 (3i ATLAS), so expect serious grind time here. The reward is another Mysterious Orb, 1,000 EXP, and 500 Gems.

Tip: The Eye is the only location where Interstellar stars spawn. Watch for the on-screen prompt announcing its appearance and fish there as much as possible during each 15-minute window.

Completing the Librarian's quests to unlock the door

With all three Mysterious Orbs in your inventory, head to the Library and speak to the Librarian. He has two sequential quests that gate access to the locked door.

Step 1: For Library Door [1], deliver 25 Quasar Core, 25 Blue Giant, and 25 Red Giant. Quasar Core is an Epic star (1 in 499) found at Hoag's Object, Centaurus A, and The Eye. Blue Giant (Epic, 1 in 30) only appears at The Eye, while Red Giant (Epic, 1 in 30) drops at Andromeda and The Eye.

Step 2: For Library Door [2], hand over 30 Blue Supergiant, 10 The First Light, and 15 Nebula. Blue Supergiant is a Legendary star (1 in 3,999) available at Hoag's Object, Centaurus A, and The Eye. You'll need more copies of The First Light and Nebula on top of whatever you already gave to Mini Merlin, so plan your farming accordingly.

Step 3: After turning in both sets of materials, the Librarian asks for a flat payment of $1,000,000 in cash. Pay him, and you receive the key to the locked door.

Placing the orbs and reaching the rod

Use the key to open the locked door inside the Library and step into the hidden room. Three raised platforms sit directly in front of you. Place one Mysterious Orb on each platform to unlock the path forward.

Walk straight ahead, and you'll reach a lava pit with stepping stones scattered across it. Falling into the lava kills you instantly, so take the parkour carefully. Hop across the stones to the far platform, where both the Frozen Flame Rod and the Frozen Flame Bobber are waiting to be picked up.

Once you grab them, both items appear in your inventory and can be equipped immediately. You'll know it worked when your rod's Strength stat reads 9 and your Luck jumps to 750.

Where to farm the required stars

The quests demand a mix of Epic, Legendary, Mythic, and Interstellar stars. Farming efficiently means knowing which locations to prioritize.

The Eye is the single most important farming spot for this questline. Since it only appears for 15 minutes at a time, use the downtime to fish at Centaurus A or Andromeda for stars that also spawn there. Potions that boost Luck can meaningfully improve your odds on the rarer drops.

Frozen Flame Rod vs. Crimson Rod

Both rods share the same Strength level of 9, meaning they can access every fishing location including the Negative Galaxy. The Crimson Rod pulls ahead with 1,250 Luck and 8x Reel Speed compared to the Frozen Flame Rod's 750 Luck and 5x Reel Speed. However, the Crimson Rod costs $5,000,000 — four million more — and requires completing the separate Ancient Locks questline in the Shadow Crypts. For players who want to reach endgame content without that extra grind, the Frozen Flame Rod is the more accessible path to Strength 9 fishing.

Once you have the Frozen Flame Rod equipped, you meet the minimum requirement for the Negative Galaxy, a temporary location that spawns for 20 minutes with a 10-minute cooldown. That's where the rarest stars in the game live, including the Galactic-rarity Prismatic Star at 1-in-45,000,000 odds. You'll also need to complete the Entry into Enron Castle quest to gain access, so keep that on your checklist if you haven't done it yet.
