OpenAI has released its biggest AI model yet, GPT-4.5, as a research preview for ChatGPT Pro subscribers. It will also be available to other paid plan users over the coming weeks. As for what the new model brings to the table, GPT-4.5, or Orion, as it is called internally, is capable of displaying more emotional intelligence and can recognize patterns better than existing models. Because of this, it can engage in more natural and human-like conversations than any other model, resulting in much richer interactions. It also tends to hallucinate less and can provide creative insights but without reasoning, since it is not a true reasoning model. If you want to try out GPT-4.5 but do not have a paid ChatGPT subscription, you can do so using the Msty app, which lets you run online and local AI models easily.

Step 1: Generate an OpenAI API Key

To be able to use GPT-4.5 without a paid subscription, you will need an OpenAI API key.

  1. Use your web browser to navigate to OpenAI's website and sign up or log in to your account. You can use your ChatGPT credentials to sign in.
  2. Once you're logged in, you will need to create an organization, even if you are only going to use the GPT models for personal use. You can generate an API key only after creating an organization. To do so, click on the 'Start building' button.
  1. Type in the name you want to use for your organization and select the level of technical knowledge from the dropdown. Then click the 'Create organization' button.
  1. If you want, you can invite other users to your organization by typing their email addresses in the provided box. To skip this step, just click the 'I'll invite my team later' option at the bottom.
  1. Now, provide a name for your API key and the project before clicking the 'Generate API Key' button.
  1. Once you've generated your API Key, make sure to store it securely since it will only be displayed once.

Step 2: Configure the Msty app to use GPT-4.5

  1. After generating your API key, open a new browser tab and go to the website of the Msty app.
  2. Click the 'Download Msty' button and select the platform you want to use it on. Make sure you select the right CPU and GPU from the available options.
  1. Once the installer is downloaded, open it and the app will start installing by itself. After the installation is complete, the app will open. Click the 'Add Remote Model Provider' button on the right.
  1. On the next page, click the dropdown at the top and select 'OpenAI' if it is not already selected by default.
  1. Copy and paste the API key you generated earlier in the 'API Key' field.
  1. Now, you will see the various AI models from OpenAI that you can use below the 'Search models' search box. However, since GPT-4.5 has only just been released, it won't show up here. So, click the 'Add custom model' button at the bottom.
  1. Type gpt-4.5-preview in the new text field that appears and click the 'Add' button at the lower right corner.

Step 3: Start using GPT-4.5 in the Msty app

As soon as you add GPT-4.5 to the Msty app, you should see the ChatGPT interface open on your screen, running the GPT-4.5 preview model. Now, you can start using it as you like. You can ask it questions, upload images and documents, help you out with coding and writing tasks, generate content, and more.

  1. Just type in your prompt in the text field and press Enter to get a response, as you normally would when interacting with ChatGPT or any other AI chatbot.
  1. After getting a response, you can use the buttons below it to perform various actions, such as editing your message, copying ChatGPT's response to the clipboard, regenerating a response, etc.
  1. You can also change the model options by clicking the button next to where the current AI model is displayed at the bottom.
  1. This lets you change things like the maximum number of output tokens and the temperature for the AI model, among other things.
  1. Then there is 'Real Time Data' button, which lets the AI access the latest information online and can be handy if you're using models which have outdated data.
  1. Next, you have the 'Quick Prompts' button, which lets you find and use premade prompts from different fields, such as academics, art, science, etc.
  1. You can also add Knowledge Stacks using the next button, but you will again have to select whether to use an API key or local model to do so.
  1. To attach images, documents, or YouTube links, click the paperclip icon and then select what you want to upload from your computer. GPT-4.5 can even describe images, analyze them, and extract text when it is connected to a vision model.

Things to know

  • OpenAI charges for API usage, which means using your API key will not be completely free. Make sure you check your usage limits to avoid high costs.
  • The latest data that GPT-4.5 has access to is from October 2023. If you want to get the latest information, make sure to enable the 'Real Time Data' option from the bottom.
  • While you can upload documents and images to the GPT-4.5 model and ask it to analyze them, the model does not currently support audio and video processing.
  • Once you've added your API key to the Msty app, you don't need to add it again each time you want to use the app. Msty will save the encrypted key on your system, ensuring it is secure and convenient to use.
