Where Winds Meet Cries in the Distance: How to Start, Solve the Yin–Yang Puzzle, and Finish the Quest

Cries in the Distance is one of the early Jianghu Legacy stories in Where Winds Meet, set around Moonveil Peak in the Qinghe region. It combines audio tracking, light platforming, a formation puzzle built around yin and yang, and a tutorial-style boss encounter that emphasizes Mystic Skills.

The same content is also referred to as the side story “Yin and Yang, Shadow and Echo,” centered on finding Feng Jisheng, exploring a hidden cave, and subduing a Thick-Skinned Albino Black Bear.

How to unlock Cries in the Distance at Moonveil Peak

The quest is anchored in the Qinghe region, using Moonveil Mountain as its hub. To get it on the log, speak with the Wayfarer at Moonveil Mountain in Qinghe. Once the Jianghu Legacy entry is unlocked, it appears in the Exploration section of the menu under Jianghu Legacy with the identifier 06, Cries in the Distance.

From the Exploration menu, you can inspect the Jianghu Legacy entry to reveal its location and enable tracking. The objective marker then leads toward Moonveil Peak, a sub‑area of Moonveil Mountain.

Feng Jisheng is the central NPC for this side story. In the broader side story list, “Yin and Yang, Shadow and Echo” follows “What Lies Beneath Twilight Clouds,” tying Feng’s search for his senior disciple Tian Ying to the events inside the cave beneath Moonveil Peak.

Reaching Moonveil Peak and tracking the cries

Once tracking is enabled, head to Moonveil Peak. If fast travel is already unlocked, teleport directly to Moonveil Peak or to the front section of Moonveil Mountain and move uphill on foot. On arrival, the game plays “cries in the distance” as a directional audio cue, paired with an on‑screen indicator that shows both direction and proximity.

Follow that indicator down the mountain rather than further up. The route leads toward a drop on the peak’s side, ending at a recess with an opening in the ground. This recessed entrance is the transition into the quest’s dedicated cave area.

Interact with that opening to load into the yin–yang hall inside the mountain.

Entering the cave and finding Feng Jisheng

Inside, the layout changes from open mountainside to a constructed hall dominated by a large yin–yang motif on the floor, surrounded by several stone pedestals and pillars. Feng’s voice continues to call out from behind the stone, and your objective marker now guides movement within this confined space.

Move across the room toward the audio marker; along the way, you will see a quiver lying on the floor. Interacting with this quiver both progresses the conversation and grants flaming arrows. Feng identifies himself from behind a stone wall and explains that a powerful yin–yang formation in the hall traps those who approach it directly.

He warns that the formation is dangerous and suggests looking around for another mechanism that can interfere with or bypass the array.

Freeing Brother Feng and activating the array

The path to freeing Feng is hidden just behind where you enter the hall. On the opposite side of the room from Feng’s prison wall is a doorway overgrown with roots or vines. Flaming arrows from the quiver are required here.

Equip the bow and use a flaming arrow on the vine‑covered entrance. The plants burn away and reveal a short passage. Step inside and stand on the ring marked on the floor. This ring is part of the Eight Trigrams formation tied to the large yin–yang dial in the main room.

Once you occupy the ring, the stone wall imprisoning Feng rises, and he is released. You can now access the chest behind that wall as well. After looting, speak with Feng in person. He then asks you to help complete the Eight Trigrams formation by standing in the designated circle, further stabilizing the array for the next stage: the yin–yang puzzle.

How the Yin–Yang puzzle in Cries in the Distance works

The core puzzle is a mechanical representation of yin and yang framed as an Eight Trigrams formation. Four main pillars sit around the central yin–yang dial. These pillars are grouped into two pairs:

Pillar ID Association Movement link Target orientation
1 Heaven Moves independently Face pillar 3
3 Earth Moves independently Face pillar 1
2 Water Linked with pillar 4 Face away from pillar 4
4 Fire Linked with pillar 2 Face away from pillar 2

The central dial also includes two circles on the floor that bind the Water and Fire pair to different positions depending on how the dial is rotated. The riddle Feng exposes on the center mechanism hints at this configuration: one pair must face each other, while the other must oppose each other.

Solution for the Yin–Yang pillars

To resolve the formation and open the path deeper into the mountain, follow this sequence:

Step Action Result
1 Rotate pillars 1 and 3 until they face one another. Heaven–Earth pair fulfills the “mutual gaze” requirement.
2 Rotate the central Yin–Yang dial so the two floor circles align beneath pillars 1 and 3. Water and Fire pillars (2 and 4) become decoupled for independent rotation.
3 Adjust pillars 2 and 4 so they point away from each other. Water–Fire pair fulfills the “mutual opposition” condition.
4 Stop interaction and observe the central mechanism. The Yin–Yang dial sinks, exposing a vertical shaft leading to a lower area.

Visual feedback confirms the correct solution: streams of air appear to move from outer pedestals toward the center, and the entire assembly retracts. The previously sealed pit now becomes the route into Tian Ying’s chamber.

Exploring Tian Ying’s chamber after the Mighty Drop

The newly opened hole leads to a deeper cave room that would normally cause fall damage. Using Mighty Drop — a Lightness Skill specifically noted in the quest objectives — lets you land safely at the bottom.

This chamber is set up as Tian Ying’s living and study area. Several objects are highlighted around the room, each advancing the investigation when inspected. These include:

  • Dusty bookshelves
  • An abandoned table or work area
  • Letters scattered nearby
  • Additional scattered texts and notes
  • A strange stone ring

Interacting with all of these glows confirms that Tian Ying had used the location as a hideout and research site, tying his story to the yin–yang formation above. Once each prompt has been examined, Feng moves toward a wall flanked by lanterns and looks for a way out.

Follow Feng to that wall, speak with him, and then interact with the wall when prompted. The stone gate lifts and reveals a descending path toward a wider cavern that functions as a training ground and the arena for the Thick-Skinned Albino Black Bear.

Defeating the Thick-Skinned Albino Black Bear with Tai Chi

The final phase opens into a flat area deeper in the mountain, visually distinct from the earlier halls. Advancing into the center of this arena triggers a cutscene that introduces the Thick-Skinned Albino Black Bear, the only enemy in the story.

Feng himself chooses a non‑combat solution and avoids direct confrontation, leaving the combat to you. The design here is not just a standard boss fight; it acts as an applied lesson in Mystic Skills, specifically a style referred to as Qiankun Shift or Tai Chi.

Tactical requirements in the bear encounter

The quest sets a very specific win condition: the bear must be made to collide with three rock formations positioned around the arena — right, left, and front. Mystic Skills are required for these interactions.

Objective Execution detail
Crash the bear into the right stone Use Tai Chi to grab or redirect the bear toward the pile of rocks on the right side.
Crash the bear into the left stone Repeat the process, this time targeting the rock pile on the left.
Crash the bear into the forward stone Finish by hurling the bear toward the rock pile directly ahead in the arena.

With Tai Chi active, you can capture the bear’s momentum and throw it into these rock piles. Each successful impact both progresses objective counters and chips away at the bear’s position in the encounter. Once all three rock formations have been used, the fight can be closed out, and the final treasure in the area becomes accessible.

Despite its role as a tutorial, the bear hits hard and can drain health quickly. Healing between exchanges is important if your build is still early‑game and lightly geared.

Rewards for completing Cries in the Distance

Cries in the Distance / Yin and Yang, Shadow and Echo grants both story‑specific quest items and a solid block of progression currency and resources. Some rewards are structured differently across Jianghu Legacy and Side Story tracking, but the combined picture looks like this:

Reward type Specific rewards
Story items Medicinal Tales, Letter to Brother, Strange Stone Ring
Materials and currencies Lv. Ebon Iron ×14, Oscillating Jade, Echo Jade ×43, Jade Fish ×150, Zhou Coin ×11800
Progression points Qinghe Exploration ×65, Enlightenment Point ×100, Character EXP ×11800
Mastery resources Ambition ×1, Martial Mastery ×8, Exploration Mastery ×4
Other Multiple chests throughout the cave with randomized gear

These rewards are delivered over the course of the story — from freeing Feng and solving the formation to looting Tian Ying’s chamber and clearing the bear’s arena. The Jianghu Legacy completion also contributes directly to Qinghe’s overall exploration score.

Once Feng Jisheng has been freed, the yin–yang formation solved, Tian’s chamber investigated, and the Thick-Skinned Albino Black Bear subdued with Tai Chi, Cries in the Distance wraps up with a final conversation. Feng closes out his immediate search, and the story opens the door to later encounters tied to Tian Ying and to further Jianghu Legacy entries in Qinghe and beyond.
