Where Winds Meet: How Strategic Sword and Inner Track Slash Build Bleed Damage

Strategic Sword is the bleed-focused sword style in Where Winds Meet. It lives in the Bellstrike – Umbra path and is built around one idea: apply Bleed quickly, let damage-over-time tick, then cash everything out in a single burst.

How to unlock Strategic Sword and enter Strategic Sword Sanctum

Strategic Sword is learned through Skill Theft in a dedicated Stealth instance, not from the main story.

Step What to do Why it matters
1. Unlock Touch of Death Finish the Jianghu Legacy side story “The Realm Endures” to gain the Mystic Art Touch of Death. Touch of Death is effectively a stealth execution and is used to silently remove guards in the Sanctum.
2. Reach Strategic Sword Sanctum Travel to the Strategic Sword Sanctum, located south of the Qinghe Region. If the Back Mountain Teleporter is unlocked, use it to fast travel. This cave-like area contains the Skill Theft encounter that grants Strategic Sword.
3. Use a Dragon Key At the entrance on the lower side of the region, interact with the Loong Herm Dragon Pillar. Doing so consumes one Dragon Key and opens the hidden passage. Dragon Keys are single-use keys required to access certain hidden martial sanctums, including this one.
4. Clear the lower floor stealth section On the first floor, wait for the two militiamen patrolling near the first chest to walk past, then assassinate them (Touch of Death is ideal) and loot the chest. For the second chest on the left, remove the two militiamen with line of sight one at a time, timing around their vision. Both chests are optional but easy to grab while learning how enemy cones and patrols behave in this room.
5. Reach the Skill Theft circle From the chests, move toward the eastern side, eliminating guards as you go, then head up the ramp to the second floor. Turn around to spot a ledge leading to a blue circle. Step into the circle to start the Skill Theft event for Strategic Sword. Completing this encounter permanently unlocks the Strategic Sword Martial Art on your account.

After the Skill Theft event, Strategic Sword appears in your Martial Arts list under Bellstrike – Umbra. The base Martial Art Skill, Inner Track Slash, is usable immediately. Heavy and Special skills unlock as you advance the talent tree and level the weapon.

Inner Track Slash, Second Track Slash, and Inner Balance Strike explained

Strategic Sword’s kit is small but tightly focused. Everything either applies Bleed, detonates Bleed, or lets you stay mobile while doing both.

Skill Type Cooldown Core effect Bleed role
Inner Track Slash Martial Art Skill (Q) 12.0 s Dash to a target and perform a quick slash. Press again during follow-through to add four more frontal slashes. Each hit applies Bleed, quickly building stacks on a primary target or a small clump.
Second Track Slash Charged Heavy (hold R) 1.0 s Charge, then rush forward in a straight line, becoming invisible and immune to damage while hitting enemies along the path. Applies Bleed with every hit, letting you push multiple enemies toward the Bleed stack cap while staying safe.
Inner Balance Strike III Special Skill (~) 1.0 s Spend Endurance to hop backward, then repeatedly strike at your previous position. If a target there has 5 Bleed stacks, deal a large one-time Bleed hit and remove those stacks. Consumes maxed Bleed stacks on each target once per cast, converting damage-over-time into a single burst hit.

Standard sword light and heavy strings sit around this core. Light attacks (left click) and the basic heavy combo (tap R) are your filler when key skills are on cooldown or Endurance is low, but they are not the engine of the build. Bleed application and detonation do the real work.

Note: Bleed stacks up to five layers on a single enemy. Strategic Sword’s talents and Internal Arts then add extra triggers that watch for “enemy at max Bleed stacks” and respond with additional Bleed damage.

Strategic Sword talents and what they actually change

Leveling Strategic Sword unlocks several talents that directly modify how Bleed behaves and how the weapon scales.

Talent Unlock timing Effect on gameplay
Bleed Mechanism Enhancement Unlocked with the Martial Art When certain skills strike an enemy already at maximum Bleed stacks, they trigger a one-time high Bleed damage hit. This rewards you for playing around fully stacked targets.
Affinity Rate Upgrade Breakthrough Tier 1 Increases Affinity Rate, raising your chance to land Affinity (critical-style) hits with Bellstrike skills and Bleed instances.
Bleed Affinity Enhancement Breakthrough Tier 2 Further boosts Affinity Rate during Bleed damage calculations, making DoT and detonations more likely to crit.
Bellstrike Increase Breakthrough Tier 3 Raises Bellstrike Attack and gives additional Bellstrike Penetration based on your maximum Bellstrike Attack, helping you push through defenses.
Attribute Damage Enhancement Breakthrough Tier 3 Makes all skills scale from Attribute Attack, with an extra modifier for Bellstrike damage specifically.

In practice, these talents mean you want to:

  • Reach five Bleed stacks quickly on priority targets.
  • Trigger Bleed-consuming effects on cooldown once stacks are maxed.
  • Invest in Bellstrike and Affinity stats on gear and tuning, because the kit directly multiplies both.

Internal Arts that power up Strategic Sword

Strategic Sword is designed to be used with a set of Internal Arts that all point toward the same goal: more Bleed stacks, more triggers, and more payoff when you switch between sword and spear.

Internal Art Category Interaction with Strategic Sword and spear
Sword Horizon Attack / Martial Arts / Pursuit After you use Inner Track Slash, Second Track Slash, or Inner Balance Strike, pressing the skill button again at the end of the animation triggers Crisscrossing Sword, a follow-up attack. If the target already has 5 Bleed stacks, the follow-up removes those stacks and inflicts a high Bleed damage hit.
Wolfchaser's Art Martial Arts / Buff Links to Heavenquaker Spear. It lowers the combo requirement for that spear’s Martial Art Skill, Sober Sorrow, and gives a rising chance to gain extra combo hits when Sober Sorrow strikes a boss already bleeding from you. The more Bleed stacks you maintain, the more often Sober Sorrow accelerates itself.
Adaptive Steel Attack / Support / Buff Grants different passive skills depending on weapon: with a Sword, Affinity damage has a chance to add an extra Bleed stack on a 10 s cooldown; with a Spear, your attacks ignore part of the target’s Physical Defense. Both effects raise value when you’re constantly bouncing between sword Bleeds and spear hits.
Insightful Strike Attack / Damage boost / Damage reduction Affinity damage generates Focus. At full Focus, you enter Concentration for 10 seconds, boosting Affinity damage and adding a small chance to heavily reduce damage taken when you’re hit. Strategic Sword’s frequent Affinity checks and multi-hit skills help keep this state active often.

Those four Internal Arts form the standard backbone for a Bellstrike – Umbra build centered on Strategic Sword and Heavenquaker Spear. They translate every Bleed stack on an enemy into either more damage, more combo progression, or more survivability.

Inner Track Slash: how it behaves and how to use it

Inner Track Slash is unlocked by default as soon as you obtain Strategic Sword; there are no side conditions, levels, or talent nodes gating it.

Property Value
Martial Art Strategic Sword
Type Martial Arts Skill
Cooldown 12.0 s
Core motion Short dash to the target followed by a quick slash; can be extended into four extra slashes in front if the button is pressed again during the follow-through.
Status Applies Bleed on hit.

Functionally, Inner Track Slash is your engage, your gap-closer, and the easiest way to put two to five Bleed stacks on a boss early in an encounter. The initial dash lets you ignore minor spacing mistakes, and the follow-up series of slashes occupies a small cone right in front of you, so it naturally clips clustered enemies.

In most rotations, Inner Track Slash does two jobs:

  • Start the Bleed cycle on a fresh target so your spear skills and Internal Arts that depend on Bleed can start working.
  • Refresh or top off Bleed stacks when your other applications are on cooldown.
Tip: Because the recovery is relatively long, pairing Inner Track Slash with Sword Horizon lets you convert that downtime into a Crisscrossing Sword follow-up and, when Bleed is maxed, an extra burst on top.

How Bleed stacking and detonation work for Strategic Sword

All of Strategic Sword’s core attacks either apply Bleed or exploit it. The weapon does not try to win by raw hit damage; it wins by constantly asking the game to tick Bleed damage, then amplifying that damage when certain conditions are met.

Stage Action What happens to Bleed
Application Use Inner Track Slash, Second Track Slash, or Inner Balance Strike hits on a clean target. Each hit adds one Bleed stack up to a cap of five. Damage-over-time starts ticking for every stack.
Maintenance Continue to land sword or spear hits on the same enemy. Bleed ticks while you attack or reposition, steadily shaving HP even when your direct damage is low.
Detonation (weapon) Cast Inner Balance Strike when the target has 5 stacks. The first hit that checks the target removes all Bleed stacks and inflicts a one-time high Bleed damage burst on that target, then starts building stacks again with remaining hits.
Detonation (Internal Art) Use Sword Horizon’s Crisscrossing Sword follow-up at the right timing on a max-Bleed target. Again removes all stacks and deals a large Bleed hit, stacking with Inner Balance Strike if they’re used in sequence.

This loop is where Strategic Sword shines in boss fights and high-HP elite encounters. You can repeatedly drag enemies up to five stacks, detonate them, and rebuild, while a spear like Heavenquaker keeps adding its own Bleed and defensive debuffs.

Playing Strategic Sword with Heavenquaker Spear

Heavenquaker Spear is the intended partner weapon for Strategic Sword in the Bellstrike – Umbra path. Both weapons stack Bleed, and Heavenquaker has built-in buffs that react to Bleed status, especially through Sober Sorrow and its related mechanics.

Weapon Key skills Role in the Bleed gameplan
Strategic Sword Inner Track Slash, Second Track Slash, Inner Balance Strike Primary Bleed applier and detonator. Sets up Bleed on demand, repositions safely, and converts stacks into burst damage.
Heavenquaker Spear Sober Sorrow, Sweep All, Drifting Thrust Stacks Bleed rapidly and uses Bleed-dependent buffs and debuffs (such as defense reduction and damage increases) to make each detonation more valuable. With Wolfchaser’s Art, Sober Sorrow gains extra synergy with bleeding bosses.

A typical pattern for the pair in high-end content looks like this at a high level:

  • Open on sword with Inner Track Slash to seed Bleed stacks.
  • Swap to spear and use Sober Sorrow and your charged spear heavy to ramp Bleed and activate spear buffs that scale with DoT.
  • Return to the sword, confirm that your main target is at or near 5 Bleed stacks, then spend stamina on Inner Balance Strike to detonate.
  • When Inner Track Slash comes back up, repeat the cycle, weaving in Second Track Slash for safe Bleed application during heavy boss mechanics.

Because Inner Balance Strike has virtually no cooldown and only costs Endurance, many high-level rotations use it multiple times per cycle, detonating Bleed three to four times in quick succession whenever stamina allows. The goal is to never sit on full Bleed stacks for long; every full stack window should be followed by either Inner Balance Strike or a Sword Horizon follow-up.

Gear sets and tuning stats for Strategic Sword

Strategic Sword scales best from physical and Bellstrike-focused stats, with Affinity riding on top as a crucial multiplier.

Gear set Pieces Effect Synergy with Strategic Sword
Hawkwing Set 2-piece +0.1% Affinity Rate. Raises the chance for both direct hits and Bleed ticks to trigger Affinity, making your damage and Insightful Strike uptime more consistent.
4-piece Every time your damage triggers Affinity, gain a stacking Hawkwing buff that increases Physical Attack for a short duration, up to five stacks. Strategic Sword’s multi-hit skills proc Affinity frequently, so Hawkwing stacks build quickly and stay up, feeding both sword and spear.
Eaglerise Set 2-piece +1 Physical Defense. Provides a small but always-on defensive bump, helpful while standing close to bosses to land sword skills.
4-piece Dealing damage-over-time or healing grants Eaglerise stacks that reduce damage taken for 10 seconds, up to five stacks; at max stacks, the next big hit within a window is heavily reduced, with a long internal cooldown. Bleed is damage-over-time, so simply running your rotation keeps Eaglerise stacking and periodically grants a strong shield against dangerous boss hits.

When tuning individual gear pieces, three stats stand out:

  • Minimum Physical Attack – raises your floor damage so every sword or spear hit contributes meaningfully.
  • Maximum Physical Attack – raises your potential peak, directly scaling skill hits and most Bleed-related damage.
  • Affinity Rate – increases how often your attacks and Bleed damage roll Affinity, which then feeds Hawkwing stacks and Insightful Strike’s Focus generation.

Using Inner Track Slash in quests like Little Master's Legacy II

Inner Track Slash also appears in environmental content and encounters where you are asked to perform specific moves.

In “Little Master’s Legacy II”, for example, the quest giver asks you to demonstrate an ability from the Strategic Sword set. You must:

  • Equip Strategic Sword in your Martial Arts slot.
  • Stand exactly on the quest marker in front of the spectator NPC.
  • Perform Inner Track Slash with the correct input for your platform (for example, on PlayStation, this is mapped to L2 + Square when using the default layout).

As long as the correct skill is used while standing precisely in the highlighted position, the quest objective completes immediately when you talk to the NPC again. The key detail is matching both the designated skill name and the exact spot on the ground; being even slightly off-position prevents the action from registering.

That interaction underlines a broader point about Strategic Sword: the game treats its signature skills as distinct, named techniques. When content calls for a demonstration, the input must trigger the specific Martial Art Skill, not just any sword attack.

Strategic Sword turns Bleed into a resource that you manage actively rather than passively. Inner Track Slash and Second Track Slash set the timer, Inner Balance Strike and Sword Horizon cash it out, and Heavenquaker Spear keeps the whole process moving while your sword is on cooldown. Once that loop feels natural, damage numbers climb fast, especially in long boss fights where DoT ticks have time to do their work.
